Re:When employees feel slighted, they work less on Saturday January 24, 2026 @08:51AM (#46743515)
As a Brit, the birthday card example feels oddly American. The effect seems plausible, but the UK equivalent slight would be something much more informal
Sometimes this is the distraction you need - building something just for the sake of it can be oddly grounding
Re:Your child’s privacy is worth more than likes (2022) on Saturday July 01, 2023 @01:36PM (#36552638)
Is Facebook encouraging people to post pictures of their kids? If they are then they shouldn't be, but parents should also have the sense not to post them
Re:Hyundai Promises to Keep Buttons in Cars on Wednesday March 22, 2023 @08:42AM (#35260133)
Auto-playing ads on car touchscreens? Is that really a thing?!

I drive pretty old used cars so I don't know what newer ones are like

Re:Mozilla moves to distrust the TrustCor CA on Thursday December 01, 2022 @05:26AM (#33814496)
Certificate Transparency should be able to detect that
Is there a need for that? Content id seems to work well enough
Re:Show HN: I solved my New Tab page on Thursday October 27, 2022 @12:57AM (#33353288)
Can't you still do that with a Chrome Extension?
Jumping ship every couple of months is concerning, but as long as you're not doing that better to do what works for you rather than worrying about what might look better to a hypothetical future employer. The main problem with staying at one place too long is getting compensated fairly
Re:When Is Short Tenure a Red Flag? on Monday October 24, 2022 @07:13AM (#33315204)
If you hate being an employee, is applying for a full-time job really the best move?

> and frankly I can't understand people whose goal in life is that

Not sure I'd call it a goal in life since most people in tech are in-demand enough to take it for granted, but providing the job has good work-life balance and isn't too stressful it's the best way to work to live. Also, not everyone has the luxury of not needing stable employment

Re:Improving Firefox Responsiveness on macOS on Monday October 10, 2022 @01:37PM (#33154208)
I don't know the answer to your question but I would agree with you. I used to be all for Chrome but with Manifest V3 it's clear Google has too much influence and we need to either switch to Firefox or create a fork of Chromium that is developed entirely separately
Re:Improving Firefox Responsiveness on macOS on Monday October 10, 2022 @01:33PM (#33154178)
I wonder what the Chromium team did
Re:Plastic-Eating Mushrooms (2021) on Saturday September 24, 2022 @07:51AM (#32961645)
How does it present it as if it were already here?
Which brands of smart TV show ads? I live in the UK and I've had three different brands of smart TV (Philips, Samsung and Toshiba) and my experience with all of them has been pretty good. Netflix, YouTube, etc. have worked pretty well and I haven't seen any ads that weren't linked to the apps themselves. Perhaps they're tracking me in ways I don't know about, though?
Re:Why don’t we do email verification in reverse? on Sunday August 21, 2022 @02:11AM (#32537812)
The standard login/sign up form is broken, though. People will just use the same password across websites or write it down. You can't win
Re:Chrome was delivered without any sprints at all (2021) on Sunday August 14, 2022 @05:21PM (#32463047)
Obviously very good that Chrome was delivered without people doing lots of overtime. However, a lot of his argument seems to be about the age of the management, and surely ageism is illegal and it should be about the person's skills rather than being old enough to have school-aged kids or even how many decades of experience they have

Edit: Okay, I guess the kind of ageism he is suggesting isn't illegal in the US, but it is in the UK and is still generally considered unethical

Re:Spain will introduce free train travel on Sunday July 24, 2022 @06:29AM (#32212020)
How would this work? As a Brit, I can say having a lot of CCTV definitely doesn't stop littering
Does the study recommend antibiotics not be used to treat ear infections? I would think the message is that it's even more important not to use antibiotics when they're not needed, not that they shouldn't be used at all
Does this still work? Windows Explorer still doesn't have tabs
Re:Video codecs and 4k on Monday June 06, 2022 @01:12PM (#31643069)
Isn't the vast majority of 4k content delivered online anyway?
So if you don't like Apple Music just use another service but listen to more music?
Re:Parking kills businesses, not bikes or buses on Saturday April 09, 2022 @04:46PM (#30971888)
That seems like a pretty big oversight? All errands within a 20 minute walk except for the most basic and car-dependent errand there is
Re:If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it? on Saturday March 19, 2022 @04:52AM (#30732245)
Both Reddit and Stack Overflow have plenty of sites scraping their content and hosting copies. People would just go to those sites from Google instead of the real ones.

Also, I can see the value of Stack Overflow to Google but what value does Reddit add? Isn't most of the content on there disposable?

Re:Don't allow animated favicons (2001) on Saturday February 05, 2022 @06:05AM (#30220010)
How could once every 20s allow someone to create an animation or be annoying?

If it is I'm sure someone could create a browser extension to stop it completely

Re:Who keeps an eye on clipboard access? on Saturday February 05, 2022 @05:55AM (#30219944)
Sure, but that should really be a permission you have to grant explicitly.

For global keyboard shortcuts an app should make commands available and it should be up to the user to tell their OS which shortcuts they want to give an app. Not just for security, but also for customisability and to avoid conflicts

I wonder if part of the problem is that the people who develop websites and put the ads on (developers) are largely also the people who use ad blockers so they don't realise how bad the experience is for regular users
Possibly A/B tests or referrer
Re:What’s entering the public domain on January 1 on Thursday December 30, 2021 @08:46AM (#29736639)
How would you value the product of a startup, or some open source software that doesn't make any money but the creator wants to use a copyleft license for? Also, how would this work internationally? Would you have to pay a proportion of the value to the US government even if the US is a small market for you?
