Very much this. I am too tired right now to engage with other responders, but thank you for articulating precisely the point I want to make.

> Is it unfair for you to create content/products/etc after you have read and learned from various sources on the internet, potentially depriving them of clicks/income?

Because it's false equivalence? ChatGPT isn't a human being. It's a product that is built upon data from other sources.

The question is if this data is legal to scrape, which it is: Web scraping is legal, US appeals court reaffirms [https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31075396].

No. He is simply saying the current interview only focuses on LC above all else. And should focus on soft skills as well among other things. You took his argument and flipped it 180 and went to the other extreme end. It's false dichotomy.

Re:Protocol Labs is laying off 21% of staff (89 people) on Saturday February 04, 2023 @11:42AM (#34655737)
This summer is going to be brutal for non-revenue generating startups (which is most of them). Assuming their last raise was last summer, they usually only have 18 months of runway before they run out of money. I don't think any of them can raise and even if they can, their valuation will take a significant hit.
People outside the finance industry really buy it too. I think it's because in most companies, VPs are above director. Only in finance, is it below.
I think the bubble is bursting with big tech employees that think they have tenure once they reach a certain level. Big tech isn't some anomaly where layoffs don't happen. It's just that their growth has been uninterrupted for a decade.
So this is a newsfeed? I think Hacker News has been doing a good job without AI. You simply need a community. I am not sure turning Facebook's news feed feature into a product is really that innovative. How many reputable news sources are there to supply their feed?
I think employees treat startups more and more like a jumping pad to get to their ultimate goal of work for Fang. There's no point staying at startups when working at a big tech will yield more money in the long term. I don't blame them though. Look at how startups are run nowadays, all the potential upside has been sucked dry by VCs.

They should have IPO'd when they had the chance.
Re:Ask HN: Would you watch a P2P YouTube replacement? on Thursday January 26, 2023 @07:20AM (#34530806)
No. I don't care how it's implemented. Telling me it's P2P means nothing to me as a consumer.
Re:Apple Unveils MacBook Pro Featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max on Tuesday January 17, 2023 @11:03AM (#34414142)
I just checked my Apple trade-in value for 16inch M1 Pro 10 core CPU 16 core GPU with 32GB. It's only worth $700USD. I would think Apple would pay more for a 1 year old laptop. I guess they don't want users like me to upgrade.
I think this is the document the article is referring to?

The internet isn't young anymore. There are millions of people using Bing right now. There also wasn't any thought when people incorporated the like button in social media. Look how it turned out for its users. Search engines are a mature product with enough users. Microsoft isn't some startup and it has capital to do this.
Has there been any studies on how incorporating ChatGPT into a search engine will affect the search results and in turn millions of people that use it? I would like to read it.
Sounds like Microsoft is trying to leap frog ahead of Google, but I worry more about the consequences of ChatGPT. Not much thought has been put into whether incorporating it in Bing will be good or bad for users.
Re:Apple CEO Tim Cook is taking a 40 percent pay cut in 2023 on Friday January 13, 2023 @04:38AM (#34365699)
For people like Tim Cook, they already have enough for the rest of their lives. Earning 40% less will not impact his standard of living. What he earns in a year is someone else’s entire career.
Re:Why ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon on Sunday January 08, 2023 @03:01AM (#34297082)
Not necessary. The google search function still works fine, its just the content becomes worst. If the content is generated from ChatGPT, I don't see how it will cut out the middle-person. I believe a more likely scenario is people appending site:reddit.com for all of their search. It will be domain specific.
Re:Why ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon on Saturday January 07, 2023 @02:55PM (#34291969)
ChatGPT will flood the internet with articles like how SEO was used to hack search. It might not replace search engine, but search results will becomes even more irrelevant.
High cost of living city. A million doesn’t go as far as it used to (inflation). Think about how much real estate has increased in the last 10 years. That’s the biggest expense for anyone.
90k to 900k is the difference between living as lower class to upper middle class at Silicon Valley.

I just watch this yesterday about post quantum cryptography.

why would anyone want to work for a business like that if there is no upside potential? then i would rather join big tech where i am be fairly compensated.
Too many people have been burnt by this before. All the reward goes to the boss and not the employees. I used to work 70+ hours and I didn't even get a thank you. I will only work those hours nowadays if I am working for myself. If not, there is no chance I will do it. It's not nice to know you are being used for someone else's personal gain.
Re:Tell HN: Happy New Year on Saturday December 31, 2022 @11:40PM (#34203673)
Happy New Year! I hope 2023 will be a better year than 2022.
Re:Ask HN: 90s kids happily less connected? on Tuesday December 27, 2022 @10:28AM (#34149450)
I personally think everyone including 90s kids are just burnt out by social media. It’s too much. The only ones that seem to still engage are teenagers because they are evergreen. That’s probably why Facebook tries to target teenagers.
Re:Signs that you’re in a toxic work situation on Tuesday December 27, 2022 @10:24AM (#34149415)
There are many more bad managers than good manager. No one ever thinks of themselves as bad manager even when the facts are present to them. They usually are busy being the hero of their own story to think otherwise. We have all been there before. I would say it’s the biggest risk of finding a new job is to be paired with a lunatic.
I stopped using Reddit when I realized I was substituting my boredom with junk content. Even blocked it on my /etc/host for awhile.
