News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Yeah, the source for the BBC article (VICE[0]) also just mentions that it included the source for Frostbite, not the entire game.

Edit: [0] is also a much better source than BBC in this case.

Re:Klarna users are being signed in to random accounts on Thursday May 27, 2021 @07:45AM (#27301841)
Yeah, so basically use something like Chia instead and create tons of e-waste?
Sadly, the most efficient way is probably to report it to the abuse contact of the host. In this case - Scaleway / Online.net.
It's also on twitch, shouldn't be geoblocked there https://www.twitch.tv/svt_slow
You could make the case that "stealing" talent is in terms of targeting hiring people where the training and research costs were footed by someone else.

Then again, as you pointed out, you could also make the case that they weren't properly compensated.

Re:Apple doesn't care about album cover art on Wednesday March 31, 2021 @03:45PM (#26652143)
Definitely! I like the fact that for example Spotify's desktop client (optionally) gives the album art a significant chunk of screen real-estate.
Re:ZGC – What's new in JDK 16 on Tuesday March 23, 2021 @06:29PM (#26561154)
Since ZGC is in OpenJDK it should already be available in Zulu as well

https://github.com/openjdk/jdk/tree/master/src/hotspot/share...

If I'm not mistaken it should be mostly fine as long as you trust the desktop/phone versions of Bitwarden not to send off the (unhashed) key to the server

Edit: Noting that there have been discussions about the default number of iterations. https://github.com/bitwarden/jslib/issues/52

Just checked, should be available on the self-hosted version as well. [0] And the author of bitwarden_rs seems to be planning to tackle it over the weekend!

So that card game they're talking about isn't a game?

But at the same time, the average life expectancy has also increased at a similar rate.

Edit: Adding to this the retirement age has not yet been raised, but is only proposed to be raised.

Re:An Advanced WordPress Knowledge Base Plugin on Friday November 03, 2017 @02:53PM (#15621449)
Shouldn't this be a Show HN?
Re:An Advanced WordPress Knowledge Base Plugin on Friday November 03, 2017 @02:49PM (#15621428)
Seems so, not that its at all obvious from the page linked to. (Though the homepage is quite a bit more clear about that aspect)
Re:Atlantropa on Friday November 03, 2017 @09:33AM (#15619051)
Tom Scott has a video about it if you prefer video content https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEdsQmjLMKs
It's pretty neat, even got a t.co URL. Sadly, it didn't lead anywhere.
Re:Show HN: Secure Windows Shell on Wednesday October 25, 2017 @09:49AM (#15550074)
I'm not sure I like hardcoded URL's that fetches stuff every time I run a program without good reason. Also, I wouldn't ever trust the program itself to check its integrity. But I digress, it's definitely an interesting project.

What are the pro's and con's of using it instead of the win32 version of OpenSSH? [0]

Re:Object oriented programming in C (2007) on Sunday October 22, 2017 @12:03PM (#15527408)
There are still a few reasons to use C even to this day and I'd add that the page was last updated in 2007.
Still not a reason to assume things here.
I love the part that consists of ~20-30 nested 3-liner if statements with various depth.

Edit: to make things worse, there's a 500-char long line in the same file, with minimal comments except for todo's.

And the "kamrindanielle" that is posting here seems to be affiliated with CloudBoost whilst using "they" instead of "we". So they sure keep an eye on the threads here.
Re:RIP the Broccoli Tree on Wednesday October 11, 2017 @03:49PM (#15452820)
Also, "anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity" is on-topic here. I'd qualify this as that, especially since the philosophical discussion in a thread further up.

Re:Three Years in Identity Theft Hell on Sunday September 17, 2017 @11:51AM (#15270147)
At first I was surprised by you mentioning Ukraine and BankID, especially since it's developed by Swedish banks. But reading about it now makes it seem like they are branching out to other European countries as well.

Over here it's basically used for everything that needs authentication / signatures - taxes, banking etc.

Re:The Bremen Drop Tower on Saturday September 16, 2017 @12:29PM (#15265323)
There's a great Tom Scott video about the tower https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aCMDQsx740
