being able to do more with less people is a payoff of its own sort. more people freed up to find other economic niches

I watched it in San Jose at Alamo and no one was heckling, but they also played a recording at the beginning reminding people not to talk during the movie. So if you want a quiet movie experience you should try a nearby Alamo Theater. The audience did clap after it was done.

I have heard from musicians who visit the bay that concert audiences are more frequently obnoxious here than other places, and they attribute it to a general lack of social skills in conjunction with all the artists being priced out of the area.

He said that he'd just gone through a breakup during a particular part. Trying not to spoil the movie here.
The thing where he said he'd gone through a break-up seemed like it could have been misleading (I don't actually know about his personal life)

Thank you for the link.

It looks unlikely that I'll be approved, since I have no CVEs credited to me, and I do not publicly post about security concerns.

Anthropic gets zero of my money because their favorite word is no. I cannot figure out how to as an individual or a small startup request elevated permissions for the purposes of anything that they think might potentially be dangerous for someone who is not me to access. I have a background in cybersecurity. I have a background in life sciences. Can I put those skills to use to benefit humanity? Who knows.
Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:50AM (#50099284)
I did!
Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @11:28PM (#50098767)
Ok, but passkeys have prevented me from being able to do something remotely before.

Like, the far away computer tries to check if my phone is nearby, and it's not, therefore I must not be authorizing the login.

If anyone knows how to fix this I would be happy to learn.

I feel like every time I have added a passkey to an account I've been forced into it, and I didn't fully understand the implications.

Re:Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:45AM (#50086856)
Amazon allows you to make returns and makes it convenient, quick, and easy. I made two purchases through independent sellers' websites in the last year, both with big banners guaranteeing satisfaction and easy returns for 100 days or something. And yet, when I found that the product didn't meet my needs, they would not accept my return. They wouldn't even issue a return label. Both of these sellers used Shop. Shop requires you to fill out an application for a refund and then the seller can drag their feet on processing it. In both cases they let the application sit there for days before rejecting it. In one of the cases my credit card company ruled in favor of the small business when I issued a chargeback.

On Amazon it's easy to request a return and get a return label all on the same day that you discover you have a subpar product. The long and short of it is that consumers do not want to be ripped off, and centralized sellers like Amazon and AliExpress make it easy to not be ripped off. If this raises prices across the board, so be it. It's worth it for the time saved and the accountability that comes along with it.

Re:GameBoy on E-Paper ESP32 at 30FPS [video] on Sunday October 11, 2026 @03:18AM (#50040490)
I know e-ink has a whole lot of limitations, which is what makes this video impressive, but, what were the limitations on the hardware used in the original gameboy screens that prevented them from remaining popular? Wikipedia says that they were STN LCD.

It's a once a year reminder that people are happy that you exist.

Sometimes children can feel like maybe their existence makes their parents lives worse, so it is important for them to be reassured that that is not the case (even if it is).

It's also just a fun thing to do. For some kids it's one of the few times per year they're allowed to go wild with sweets, so it's something they look forward to.

> If you want something just buy it.

Kids also often do not yet manage their own finances, so they don't have the freedom to just buy the things they want.

Prove it then - make mirrored life. I think we still don't fully understand biology and we won't until we start actually proving our theories about what is going on.

I keep clicking through on these because I am curious about what Terrence Tao has to say, and then they are always guest posts.
I think you're confused. When the White House decided to stop having federal agencies buy paper straws [1], they didn't designate paper straws a supply chain risk, they just stopped buying them. The term has a very specific meaning which would not apply in the pen scenario.

Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @05:58PM (#49823151)
I'm really hoping the Waymo initiative can convince them to cut the number of bus stops!
Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @01:22PM (#49819484)
The situation we are talking about here involves a bridge with no dedicated bus lane or fast lane.
Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @12:41PM (#49818797)
No doubt they are possible. One factor that discourages their existence though is that the dregs of society mess them up or go in there to do drugs in private and then conk out. It's the number one pushback to providing restrooms for the public. It sucks, but it's how it is. Most likely the only way around this is to stop subsidizing transit and to be very careful to enforce fares. This is not popular among the people who love transit, who tend to also love the underdogs and root for them.
Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @12:28PM (#49818555)
???

You have a really dim view of humanity </3

People need to get from point A to point B. Traveling to meet up with friends is in no way gratuitous.

Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @04:25AM (#49813138)
Oh, I think it's a great idea to reward people for taking transit because it will help reduce traffic on the road and allow the Waymos to operate in tighter loops, increasing availability to other passengers, and possibly even bringing costs down as a result.

My selfish trip all the way across the city instead of to the nearest convenient transit station makes things worse for everyone except for me :)

To make it more clear why this would be the case, imagine that everyone in the city behaved as I did, all taking Waymos to this same train station, even if it was far out of their way. Almost all the Waymos would start at that train station after dropping other people off, and they would have to drive to get the next person, so you can think of each trip as a loop. Some of the loops would be very small and fast, for people who happen to be close to that train station, while others would be very long, for the people who started all the way across town. Less cars are needed to accommodate the short loop trips than to accommodate the long loop trips, and since there are a limited amount of cars, people will have to wait longer to complete their trips.

If instead you imagine that each Waymo that's driving around initializes on a grid around the city, with, idk, 10 blocks between each of them, and the people who want a ride, also equally distributed, all instead get a ride to their nearest transit station, the loops are shorter, which means more people can receive service.
