I make Walden Pond, so if you've got any questions, go for it!
Re:Reading the web offline and distraction-free on Monday October 11, 2021 @04:20AM (#28826024)
I've been making something for this for a couple of years now, with http://waldenpond.press/

It connects to the Pocket API to get the parsed articles, pushes them through quite a lot of BS4 clean up, then renders them using paged.js. The resulting PDFs are then printed by Lulu.com, and they come once a month as a printed book to read completely offline.

I solved the Medium image issue with CSS as far as I remember. `.medium\.com svg:first-of-type` and then set it to `display: none`.

I just came across this by accident!

I make WP* for exactly this reason. I'm about to finish a 12 hour edition that I made to test if the printers could handle it (they could) and there's no way I'd have read that much on my phone.

* WP is my iso project

Re:Ask HN: How do you balance reading books vs. articles on Tuesday December 08, 2020 @04:12AM (#25343346)
I read mostly fiction books too. (At bed time mostly) For articles I save them them to Pocket, and then every so often I'll edit the list.

I make a zine called https://WaldenPond.press that I get delivered once a month. Then I leave my phone inside and read for 20 minutes or so on the balcony while I have a coffee in the morning.

It doesn't sound like much, but I'm consistently getting through the 4 hour edition in about 2 weeks. Then I switch to just reading my fiction book in the morning as well as at night.

Thanks! We don't have any specifically curated lists yet. We've talked about it a lot though.

There is a mega list of articles that other people have saved here: https://waldenpond.press/2020/08/30/popularity.html

There are also some really good curated lists out there, e.g. https://tetw.org/ to plug the gap for now

Well spotted. I set that page up before I've even started on the rest of the site because I needed it for the auth, and haven't gone back to it. It'll give me something to do this weekend! Thanks for the reminder.

Show HN: Saved articles, in a zine, delivered every month

Hi HN,[yorgos_kats][1] posted [My Screen Break][2], which looks really nice! People sent me messages about it because it has a lot in common with what I'm working on: [Walden Pond][3] ( https://WaldenPond.press ).You connect your [Pocket][4] account, and once a month you get a printed magazine. You can subscribe for 1, 2 or 4 hours of reading time. I got my 7th one on [Monday this week][5].We...

I’m Digitising Jonathan Glover’s book, What Sort of People Should There Be?

It's some early philosophy of what it would mean to live entirely in VR, how designer babies should work, all the cool stuff that was purely academic when it was written, but is pretty close to real now!

The book is here: http://notionparallax.github.io/people/

and if you spot something that needs attention, the repo is here: https://github.com/notionparallax/people

PRs very welcome!
