You no longer can say that it's hard to emigrate to the USA: you just need to enlist, give up your freedom and possibly your morals! Grrreat deal.

Re:What did you learn so far this year? on Sunday June 07, 2015 @03:28PM (#9676030)
I'm starting to realize that what I like about web development is creating visual experiences. Sadly, that job, at least around here, seems to be limited to web agencies with all the crazy deadlines and crazy hours that implies (I know because my last job was in an agency).

So, here I am, making admin panels and customizable charts. I have learned a lot though (ElasticSearch, Angular, etc), even if it's not fun stuff.

Re:Ask HN: Keeping sane while working remotely on Monday May 18, 2015 @10:09AM (#9564481)
Why? I went from having very limited free time due to having a commute to having at least 3 - 5 hours every day after work. Even more if I woke up earlier.

I'm interested in learning how to use those hours that I never had before because I have been marathoning Netflix series and I'm not so sure that's good for me in the long run.

Re:Ask HN: Keeping sane while working remotely on Sunday May 17, 2015 @09:54PM (#9562552)
I'll take that into account, but right now I'm more interested in improving my free time. Working from home is perfect right now. :)

Ask HN: Keeping sane while working remotely

I started working remotely a couple of weeks and it's great. I'm happier, less stressed and I'm learning a lot. I can wake up, shower and start working right away. I have to keep office hours but the lack of commute is wonderful. However, after a couple of weeks of this, I have realized that I can perfectly spend an entire week without leaving my apartment or talking to someone in person. I...

Re:Ask HN: Where do you aim to be 30 years from now? on Monday April 06, 2015 @11:46AM (#9328659)
Best case scenario: Retired, living in the beach or a mountain somewhere.

Worst case scenario and much more probable: Too old to continue working in the ageist tech industry and too old to start again, I'll be working a low-wage job trying to make ends meet.

Re:Show HN: A 3D live tweet wall for your events on Friday March 20, 2015 @10:25AM (#9237866)
It really needs some kind of demo or video, there's no way I'm going to log in just to see what it does considering the amount of permissions it requests.
Re:Ask HN: How much (technical) debt does your team owe? on Wednesday March 18, 2015 @01:25PM (#9227140)
I'm currently working in web agency so speed > anything else.

The amount of technical debt we have shipped dwarfs the GPD of a small country.

Re:Ask HN: Tell me your biggest pain and I will try to solve it on Saturday February 07, 2015 @06:56PM (#9015835)
I know HTML/(S)CSS like the back of my hand. I know enough JS for most use cases and I'm starting to explore React and other frameworks to expand my knowledge. In the backend side of things I can code in PHP without any problem and I have hacked a bit in Ruby and Python, currently trying to expand what I know in Ruby in my free time.

The local market sucks so I'm unable to escape from my agency job. I feel trapped making disposable marketing websites that will disappear in a month or two. I have applied to remote jobs but most don't want someone that is not from the US.

I have no idea what to do. I feel like my current job is killing my drive for web development even though I love it.

Sorry for venting here.

Re:Tips Wanted on Journey – Learning to Program a Photo App on Saturday February 07, 2015 @05:20PM (#9015525)
Photo app like an image gallery or something like Instagram that applies filters to images?

When you say app do you mean a web page/app or a phone app?

Re:The Life of a PHP Developer on Saturday February 07, 2015 @04:07PM (#9015305)
We use mostly PHP at work but lately I have been using my free time to learning Ruby because most good job offers around here ask for Rails knowledge.

I'm not saying there are no PHP job offers, there are, but they are mostly for maintaining old codebases that have none of the good features that modern PHP has. Or they are for web agency jobs that consist of mass producing cookie cutter web sites.

I think Laravel 5 looks very interesting but I feel I can't afford to explore it because I need to learn Ruby if I want a better job.

I can't believe how negative the article's comments are. Is everyone so addicted to work?

I would understand if I could work at top performance 10-12 hours a day, 5 days a week but that's just not possible for me. In the end driving developers to exhaustion is worse for everyone, with subpar code that'll probably require refactoring Monday morning.

I remember there was more than a couple of years between the 4th and the 5th book's release. More than enough time for the general audience to grow out a bit of the books.

Personally, I hate the last book but all of the others are just fine.

Is there no way to check out pricing before signing up?
Re:Ask HN: How do you bookmarking? on Thursday January 08, 2015 @11:43AM (#8857192)
Pinboard plus a Pinboard extension for Alfred (https://github.com/spamwax/alfred-pinboard). It makes bookmarking and tagging almost instantaneous.

Yosemite, Macbook Retina 13". I hope it doesn't trigger again as I still can hear my ears ringing.
Re:Show HN: Headphone Enhancer for Techno and 5.1 Movies on Tuesday December 30, 2014 @05:47PM (#8817173)
I got an extremely loud noise when I used it for the first time, so be careful after installing it.
Re:The downfall of Quora (2013) on Sunday September 28, 2014 @02:18PM (#8380473)
> I mentally blacklisted Quora when it was proudly US only (I'm Canadian). Their reasoning was extremely dubious: something about "cultural differences" and "language barriers" preventing "high quality content".

This was their first and final strike for me. If they didn't want me why would I want to sign up now?

I'm worried about my email being seen as spam or worse.

Ask HN: What do you think about receiving emails expressing interest in a job?

The local market is dead so I'm looking for a remote job somewhere else. I've sent some resumes to companies advertising here and in WeWorkRemotely but I haven't had much success. How bad would it be to start sending emails to companies and startups that look interesting asking if they have an opening for someone like me?

Re:CSS One-Liners on Thursday July 24, 2014 @10:52AM (#8079852)
That's very cool but I can't help thinking "Why would you want to do that?". Columns are awful to read on a webpage.
I've always wondered, who is the target for this kind of post?

I can't remember the last time I didn't stay in the office an extra hour or two because everything is urgent and for yesterday.

It seems only owners or freelancers able to set their own rules can benefit. As an employee, if I want to keep my job, my personal life is screwed.

Re:Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality on Friday July 18, 2014 @11:54AM (#8053706)
I disagree. It starts with a rather insufferable tone and then, somehow, it manages to get worse.
Re:How much do salaried programmers really work? on Monday July 14, 2014 @09:34PM (#8034281)
I work in an agency so I feel like I'm living in the worst of two possible worlds: I'm expected to work overtime everyday as clients always need everything for yesterday and I'm expected to get there everyday at 9AM no matter how late I stayed the previous day.
Move to South America or Asia and live off your savings for the rest of your life. Unlimited time for hobbies!
Re:Ask HN: Startup as a worker cooperative? on Sunday June 01, 2014 @03:43AM (#7828475)
Why?

Ask HN: Startup as a worker cooperative?

The longer I work for someone else the more interested I become in alternatives for my future.Worker cooperatives seem ideal from my perspective: all worker-owners decide together what are the business priorities, everyone shares both profits and losses, etc.The thing I'm not sure about is applying this kind of thing to a startup or even a web dev agency.Any opinions or experiences?
