Re:If you love a website, back it up on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:40PM (#50344202)
Agree, I backed up Fravia's website back in the day, and it is fun to come back to.
Re:Egoless Mathematics in the AI Era on Monday November 02, 2026 @03:06PM (#50342907)
You can still discover it for yourself even if AI discovered it first (or some other human, or an alien on another planet). It is fun to figure out how something works, in and of itself
That is also not how it works. The theorem says that there exist some true statements for which there is no proof. This is assuming the axioms are consistent.
I think we should be horrified/outraged that calculators exist and are clear cutting the once viable field of human calculation.

Yes, I am being sarcastic.

I think we shouldn't have calculators anymore either. The world was better when we had to calculate everything by hand and a human by hand verified every single addition and subtraction.
Is it a hallucination machine and a stochastic parrot or is it so powerful we need it to be controlled like nuclear weaponry
Genuinely curious, where have you been reading that? How would they be able to evaluate whether the sandboxes were reasonable or not?

"To selflessly further the total sum of knowledge?"

Yes. I think you are saying this sarcastically but I'm not sure... This is why you should get involved in research at the frontier.

"What field? Who’s leaving?"

Mathematics, and I'd extend it to other academic disciplines. Do you care more about the results and the knowledge or about who gets credit?

The drive for "glory" has many negative effects in academia that do not get enough recognition. Just look at the replication crisis in psychology for an example. The fact p-hacking was rampant among psychology "researchers" was well known even in the 90s. I remember my professors in grad school for physics joking about it way before it became a mainstream-ish story.

So why did this happen? Because there was no one with institutional power in psychology who both understood the problem and cared. No one who was interested in the furthering the "total sum of knowledge" rather they were interested in your "glory."

Re:A misalignment of AI in mathematics on Friday September 11, 2026 @10:46PM (#49668223)
Good? Those people were in the field for the wrong reasons. No reason to mourn them leaving
This seems like an unserious experiment from the premise, but it could be interesting. But has this effect been replicated?
I mean there were problems with the "old way" as well. Not clear if this change is net positive or negative in my opinion.
Re:Claude Opus 5 on Saturday July 25, 2026 @08:54PM (#49053497)
The difference is that white collar as a class gleefully aided outsourcing/automating blue collar jobs with the exact same economic argument
Re:Claude Opus 5 on Saturday July 25, 2026 @09:09AM (#49047311)
Automation is only good if you're putting blue collar people out of work! White-collar is out of bounds! People should do the work where they add unique value
Re:So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe on Thursday July 23, 2026 @07:26AM (#49019838)
Is the purpose of a system really what it does though? Obviously there are side effects and tradeoffs in any complex system. Is the purpose of a vaccine to make you sick - no, but that is a side effect of some vaccines on some people.

If we apply the "purpose of a system is what it does" to itself, this methodology is more a way to generate interesting (and cynical) hypotheses than to get at the truth.

Re:Human mathematicians are being outcounterexampled on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @11:31AM (#48993636)
Obviously I mean the definition of evil implied by your statement that they are indefensibly evil...

Again, what level of copyright violation is evil? Downloading music without paying for it? Apparently using images/text that artists have made public is evil, so I'm curious what the bar is here for evil.

Using electricity to improve white collar efficiency is also evil. Good to know

Re:Human mathematicians are being outcounterexampled on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @10:18AM (#48992704)
This is a very close minded definition of evil. What is the threshold of environmental impact before something is evil and its use indefensible?

What level of copyright violation will send us to hell?

Re:The Dead Economy Theory on Saturday May 30, 2026 @07:23AM (#48335059)
There's definitely going to be cheap or open source models
For those of us who care about the answers to these questions, rather than who gets credit for doing it, we will welcome any faster means of solving these problems.
Asymptotic Safety also predicted the higgs mass (126 GeV vs the measured value of 125 GeV). https://arxiv.org/abs/0912.0208

The trick is, at that time most of the possible mass range was excluded experimentally, so it is a bit less impressive. I'm not sure how much tuning went into it (possibly none)

I unironically agree, p-hacking should be a criminal offense.
Interestingly, there is some neuroscience research that transformer architecture resembles "cue based retrieval" in the human brain in some important ways.

Re:Global warming has accelerated significantly on Friday March 06, 2026 @12:42PM (#47278358)
As we all know, global warming wasn't happening until AI data centers started being built. They are honestly a drop in the bucket
I find this kind of reduction silly.

All your brain is doing is bouncing atoms off each other, with some occasionally sticking together, how can it be really thinking?

See how silly it sounds?

just replace "money" with "prestige" and I think the above comment works just fine
Re:Mark Zuckerberg Lied to Congress. We Can't Trust His Testimony on Wednesday February 18, 2026 @12:20PM (#47063480)
My point is if the people in the study were not randomly selected, there are any number of confounding factors that could influence why their anxiety changed.
Re:Mark Zuckerberg Lied to Congress. We Can't Trust His Testimony on Wednesday February 18, 2026 @12:19PM (#47063456)
I don't know that, which is why I said "maybe."

Facebook does not typically do academic level research - they do quick studies to verify product direction.

From what I have seen, the actual academic studies on this are mixed. It is hard to say one way or the other, and it can affect different teens differently depending on how they use it.

Re:Mark Zuckerberg Lied to Congress. We Can't Trust His Testimony on Wednesday February 18, 2026 @11:57AM (#47063171)
"But internal study found users who stopped using Facebook and Instagram for a week showed lower rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness."

This isn't causal though. The users who quit were not randomly selected. Maybe they were receiving some kind of mental health treatment, and as part of that they stopped. Then the recovery could have been from the treatment or it could have been from stopping.

Re:I miss thinking hard on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @03:20PM (#46891078)
Are you saying I was incorrect for feeling that way?

The reason is that you no longer really know what's going on. (And yes, that feeling would be the same if C++ had as rich a library of packages as python for numerical analysis.)

If you are doing something that requires precision you need to know everything that is happening in that library. Also IIRC, I think not knowing what type something is bothered me at the time.

Re:I miss thinking hard on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @11:36AM (#46887972)
I felt the same way about python when I was switching from C++ to python for data analysis
