Pretty clear this was rushed: there are no comments from external mathematicians, unlike the Erdős announcement:

Anthropic can cancel the deal on short notice: “The agreements may be terminated by either party upon 90 days’ notice.”

You might like "Coming of Age in the Milky Way".
3250? The H100 NVL product spec [1] says it can do ~8 PFLOPs of FP8.

50th Anniversary Of '|'

Apparently today is the 50th anniversary of using '|' for connecting shell pipelines. It was introduced in v4 of the Thompson shell, whose manpage is dated 1973-04-18 [1]. Previously the syntax for 'a | b' was `a >b>` [2].[1]: https://www.in-ulm.de/~mascheck/bourne/v4/ [2]: https://www.in-ulm.de/~mascheck/bourne/v3/

"[L]ook at those folds!" I'm looking at the folds, and they got worse.

And take the cover of the Lorsch Gospels: the misshapen fingers, the bulging eyes, the blank expressions -- this is crude, not stylized. You get the sense that art is devolving back to the "archaic smile".

Re:SSH Bastion Host Best Practices on Thursday January 13, 2022 @03:52PM (#29926679)
It recommends:

  # Configure idle time logout
  ClientAliveInterval <value in seconds>
but i don't think this is correct. AFAICT, this is a keep-alive mechanism, not a timeout. I don't think openssh has an option to kill idle sessions.
Re:The Rise of Meson on Wednesday September 01, 2021 @10:32AM (#28380328)
Yeah, i had the same reaction. For example, meson couldn't find pybind11 until i added `pybind11-config --cmakedir` to CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH.

Re:Apache Arrow 3.0 on Wednesday February 03, 2021 @04:35PM (#26019457)
To be fair, arrow absorbed parquet-cpp, so a little confusion is to be expected.

Re:A (possible) solution to Covid-19 on Friday April 10, 2020 @11:56AM (#22834307)
Article [1] is dated Feb 12, and contains the sentence:

"Instead, it [SARS-CoV-2] appears to be no more concerning than the influenza virus." The citation for this claim is an article in Canada's National Post.

Re:Exponential Growth and Covid-19 [video] on Sunday March 08, 2020 @04:59PM (#22520582)
In the last few days Ontario has found 2 cases of Covid-19 in people who recently travelled to the US:

https://news.ontario.ca/mohltc/en/2020/03/ontario-confirms-n... https://news.ontario.ca/mohltc/en/2020/03/ontario-confirms-n...

All the other cases we've seen were related to travel to Iran, Italy, Egypt, & China IIRC.

EDIT: one was a woman who returned from Colorado on Mar 2, the other a man who returned from Las Vegas on Feb 28.

The DoD budget is ~$700B, so that's <0.1%
Re:Toronto area sent nuclear alerts by mistake on Sunday January 12, 2020 @02:02PM (#22028351)
I wonder how many people are killed per alert?

These alerts (usually AMBER alerts) are sent to millions of people, accompanied by a loud and startling siren.

You can imagine all sorts of "one-in-a-million" events. The surgeon woken in the middle of the night, who can't get back to sleep and makes a mistake the next day. The startled roofer falling off a ladder. Etc.

Shareholders, the board, and upper management should be punished. But the company should not.
