Your reply gives me hope.

Show HN: Stories are being shadow banned from OGs

I've been on HN when PG used to personally reply to me in posts and this is some stasi level op. Not surprisingly. I went into HN on a VPN using a Chrome incognito tab and noticed my comments and posts were not being shown. Silently discarded, and lost in the ether. I get it, spam and bots are a thing, but perhaps somebody who's been active on HN since 2011 (6525 karma) and personally...

Just listened the horrific ATC audio. Why didn't she initiate LearJet's heated wing de-icing? When OAT is around 0C should have been turned on. They were flying in -47C that's ridiculous cold.

Anybody recommend a CVE alert self-hosted app? E.G. I specify my software, OS’s, and versions and when a matching CVE is created I get an alert. Don’t want enterprise security products.

There are live dealers with shoes of real cards with most online crypto cainos. Though, who knows if they are cheating somehow. My point was, the attacker doesn't have to bet the entire deposit. Just make it seem like they are playing.

I suppose they could play the super long game and deposit many many small amounts into "shady" online crypto casinos, play a few hands of blackjack and then withdraw. Clean coins.

Crypto is the biggest target for blackhats to utilize AI on. Huge amounts of money, no central authority or country and methods of wiping tracks.

What I never get is how they plan of converting the stolen crypto to cash eventually. No exchanges are gonna take the coins.

Welcome to the party. Remember during covid if you even questioned the lockdowns, mask effectiveness, vaccines you were shadow blocked or even banned. This is why Elon buying Twitter was such a big deal.

Does it note a risk their technology exterminates the entire human race, as they been shilling.
Re:SimCity, but with Permits on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @03:58PM (#50171807)
They should add a LA mode where you spend $9,000 in permits for a home extension only to have it burn down in a wildfire.
Re:Who Is Planting Backdoors in Ledger Crypto Wallets? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:54AM (#50087847)
So where does the implanted chip upload the seed phrase to? Who owns that website? This seems like it should have been caught with wireshark or network sniffing of the Ledger app?
Fair, I get the performance of DX12 or OpenGL may vary widely, but I was thinking for AI applications though further research on my part showed a dramatic math difference.

Sha256 is mostly integer additions, bit rotations, XOR, AND operations. While AI workload are matrix multiplication and accumulation. I sort of answered my own question then. :)

Ask HN: Why don't we just use hashcat to evaluate GPU performance

I ran the following on a M4 Pro (20 core GPU) in MacOS vs a 4070 Super in Windows 11 using WSL and was kinda shocked to see the dramatic difference in GPU performance. ## generate a random sha256 8 alphanumeric python3 - <<'PY' > hashes-sha256.txt import secrets import string import hashlib alphabet = string.ascii_letters + string.digits password =...

Tell HN: Xbox Game Pass now limits the amount of hours each month

Just got this absurd e-mail from XBOX Game Pass. Conveniently sent at 8pm (central). This is the final straw, whoever is coming up with these decisions needs to be stoned in the streets. We're making changes to how cloud gaming is included with your XBOX Game Pass subscription.Beginning in November, XBOX Game Pass subscriptions will move to a set number of cloud hours each month, based on your...

Re:New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @07:55PM (#49442384)
True but memory bandwidth is not the entire story. Geekbench (while not a end-all benchmark) shows:

                      Single-Core Multi-Core
  M1 Max, 10-core 2,204 14,004
  M4 Pro, 14-core 3,311 24,711

Single-threaded CPU: M4 Pro is roughly 1.5× as fast. Multi-threaded CPU: M4 Pro is roughly 1.75× as fast. GPU: roughly equal to a full 32-core M1 Max, with the M4 Pro slightly ahead in Geekbench Metal.

Obviously the M4 Pro feels faster.

Optimus ins’t gonna be a master welder, electrician, HVAC technician, general contractor anytime soon.
If anybody is looking for alternatives, I’m a very happy user of Bezel (https://beszel.dev) on my home lab servers including a Raspberry Pi Kubernetes cluster and TrueNAS. Highly recommend.
Re:New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @11:14AM (#49435592)
I also can feel a speed/sluggishness difference between my M1 Max MacBook Pro and my M4 Pro (14 core).
Re:New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @11:03AM (#49435408)
Upgrading to 48GB memory is $600…. Gut punch. I have a M4 Pro (top cpu skew 14 cores). Any idea the performance gain to M5 Pro? I feel like they holding off releasing M6 Pro because a new studio is dropping soon as well.
At time of his talk Bitcoin was trading at around $8. Let that sink in.
There a few factors at play. I believe China has launched a very successful campaign of misinformation in order to slow down US progress and allow them to “win” the “AI War”. Then climate activists and let’s be frank far left leaning people have taken the bait hook line and sinker and amplified it.

Second Anthropic at the start was very vocal about datacenter doom. Their motivate besides wanting regulatory capture is again slow down their competitors and corner the market.

Lastly mainstream media loves a good doomer story of tech people getting rich displacing working class Americans while “destroying earth”.

Paying Typora user here, and wondering the same.
This sort of coddling and weak policy is setting students up for a rude awaking when they get into the professional workforce.
Re:Hyperspace on Monday August 10, 2026 @11:55PM (#49253193)
Seems useful for s3 buckets. I suppose a script that watches for new objects, calculates its sha256 and stores that in a DB, then checks for duplicate hashes would be a fairly trivial task. Though s3 doesn’t support symbolic links so accounting would need to be handled by server side code.
It’s absolutely wild that agents used a write access oversight in their package manager to communicate amongst themselves. It essentially created an agent ad-hoc chat interface using their own package manager file system.
