May I know why their accent was relevant in this?

I was just inspired by FEBO listing themselves on UberEats. I thought if they could put themselves on UberEats, I can aspire to be anything in life.

Re:I need structure in my life on Monday October 03, 2022 @12:55PM (#33070214)
It is important to listen to the body. I tried to have a spartan level of self discipline and that put me in a express route to burn out. And I burned out.

Burn out is not easy to climb out of, so I would rather be less than ideally productive than be disciplined to an extent that ignores my humanity and that damages me severely.

Yes vote for congress.
That's what I heard as well. Your recollection is good.
I wouldn't say that is mistreatment. It is a business transaction where one party has more leverage than the other. 99% of the time the employee in the lower income region gets a far high salary than they expect to get at another employer. So it is not like they are being coerced into a "unable to make ends meet" levels of income.

The employee ends up doing pretty well.

> The point of a PIP is to create a paper trail to protect the company from incurring further costs and liability risk, so as a purely post-decision defensive strategy, it makes sense to not disclose it. The laws makes it such that everyone has to sustain the fiction that a PIP is in earnest, which creates that creepy gaslighting feeling. The supreme irony is keeping it secret could mean a more personally honest and less psychologically harmful relationship for all involved.

> That culture needs to be implemented with actions, and by the leadership behaving according to that culture, not by sending out a memo.

I think the memo saves a lot of people a lot of time and frustration. By actions you mean "not tolerated" in the sense that someone is fired or reprimanded for a set of behaviours then that would raise a lot of questions about what else doesn't fly when working there. It is better that they published a memo.

Not something most developers who may use a tmux equivalent would know about.
They make that in probably the time I took to write this comment. Source: used to work there.
Re:Ask HN: How to increase SWE salaries in Europe? on Friday January 15, 2021 @05:57AM (#25789367)
I am based out of Europe. I am a developer here. I have worked in a different tech market before coming here - India.

The whole of Europe's tech scene is smaller than India's. I think that is the reason for the pay gap. Even despite that the pay for engineers is significantly above the median wage.

I live in the Netherlands and I make a salary similar to doctors, lawyers and dentists. So the face value of the salary may be lower but it is a lot for here.

Ask HN: How to mask location for a corporate VPN?

I am working for a publicly traded company. I have been spending the past 9 months alone in my apartment in Europe and it's driving me crazy. Having been recently separated has aggravated the effects.I am hoping to work from a SEA country for 2.5 months. My employer is publicly traded.I have already asked my manager about it and while he himself is unconcerned, the HR Policy is that they are...

Java and Javascript. This is the tech stack/need of the vast majority of the software development world. Be good in these two and you can be employable anywhere in the world in most industries.

You will be able to be hired even in the highest paying companies.

The number of jobs asking for Go is very small. The OP is asking to be very employable.
Re:Ask HN: How does one become a better Software Engineer? on Thursday December 10, 2020 @07:12AM (#25372834)
No. You won't know more than the average web dev by a large margin. You will know very little of what is possible today and some things that are outdated and not relevant any more which are going to be useful in very rare situations.

Also Tamil. Your cousin's brother in law's sister's mother in law will attest to your caste whatever that caste is.

They check for who you are related to and know knows you who belongs to X caste.

9/11 also happened spectacularly in the middle of new york. Does that mean law enforcement tried to do something about Afghanistan? Was it the fault of airports to not do a thorough cavity search of each and every passenger?

Our life is to this day in many small ways runs on a contract that others are not trying to kill us. Security check or not.

That doesn't justify someone abusing flawed systems to threaten people's lives.

Re:Ask HN: Why can't nuclear waste be launched into the sun? on Monday October 26, 2020 @10:16AM (#24896382)
And now you have radioactive magma. Rock mixed with radioactive nuclear residue elements. It doesn't "disappear". It is not being burnt out of existence. It is still radioactive at a atomic level.
