Re:Ask HN: Starting a Career in Programming at 61? on Friday March 25, 2022 @12:35PM (#30804223)
At age 50, after a successful non-technical career, I took a few college classes and then went to a bootcamp. The bootcamp got me an internship (a bit humbling but it got me in the door) and I have been programming ever since. I will turn 60 this year and I am pretty sure I could do the same thing today that I did 10ish years ago. It was not always easy and I probably got a few lucky breaks along the way, but I would not discourage anyone from exploring the possibility.

I use Blot as well and have been very pleased with it.

Africa has been the hardest hit. Progress has been made in reducing deaths in recent years, but millions is not an exaggeration and children have often been the victims. While most of us have a negative attitude towards DDT because of its impact on the wildlife, it did play an important role in controlling mosquitoes and reducing malaria infections in the past.

There is a book out about this phenomenon. More info here: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/dec/02/nomadl...
I'm also doubtful about the management of hosts. Yesterday, an Airbnb Superhost cancelled my upcoming reservation without explanation. I booked with a hotel and saved about $25. Airbnb has been my first choice for awhile. I think it is going to be my back up choice for the near future.
Re:Can we get to 350 ppm? Yes we can on Saturday July 22, 2017 @04:31PM (#14829206)
CCL is a great organization. I joined after the election because I was really upset and could either mope or get involved with something important to me. I like the fact that CCL has a non-partisan or bi-partisan proposal and that it sincerely works both sides of the aisle. Our country has societal problems and it's got political problems. CCL is trying to address them both.

I got involved with this bi-partisan group. I would like to do even more, but this was a good start for me. http://citizensclimatelobby.org/
I have been struck by the number of accounts supporting Trump that appear to be either bots or part of a slick marketing campaign. Many of them have glossy photoshopped backgrounds that include Trump, Pence and American imagery. The tweets are vociferous and highly partisan. It's actually a little overwhelming and has pushed me away from the platform.
Today, my wife, who is an American citizen of Indian origin, told me she is afraid to travel around town without her passport. We read stories like this and about broad ICE raids and the shooting in Kansas and it begins to take a toll.
Re:Learning to code at 56 on Thursday January 05, 2017 @01:02PM (#13329579)
After a long career in public health, I began learning to code at age 50. I took a couple computer science courses at a local university and then attended a bootcamp focused on Rails. The bootcamp got me an internship, and after the internship, I was hired on a junior dev. Three years later, I am still at the same company (although it has been acquired) and have received one promotion. Most of what I learned, I learned on the job, and there was a long period where I just googled, cut and pasted, but with time, things began to make more sense. I really enjoy what I do today and can imagine doing it for many years to come.

I always appreciate these kinds of references. Thanks for the material. A couple small items: 1) Some of your links under further reading, don't go anywhere. 2) I'm confused about the Joins section. The second sentence under Tables, says you will cover joins later, but I'm not sure when that happens. Otherwise, helpful material. Thanks again.
Re:Ask HN: Who are your favorite poets? on Monday March 30, 2015 @09:50PM (#9293910)
David E. Howerton. He's not well known but one of my favorites.

  nuqDaq Hon e’be’ pa’

And the translation:

  the gathering of my mind,
  seeing shadows move,
  which aren’t there.
  Hear the voices whispering
  along the edge of minds
  coming out of nowhere.

My thoughts exactly. What a soap opera. Everyone needs to take a deep breath.
