Re:Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use? on Thursday December 14, 2023 @12:50AM (#38638236)
I was always terrible at getting out of bed. I tried some alarm clock apps that gave you challenges (solve a math problem, scan a barcode, etc). That worked until I realized I could just kill the app and stay in bed.

I realized I needed something outside of the app to push me. So I ended up building Nuj. https://nuj.app

It’s an alarm clock app that charges me $10 if I don’t get up and scan my toothpaste barcode within a 5 mins of my 7am alarm.

The alarms are stored in the cloud so if I kill the app or try to cheat, I still get charged the penalty. Also, alarms “lock” 1 hour before going off so I can’t turn off the alarm and stay in bed if I wake up before it goes off.

I don't know if I have ADHD, but I've always been terrible at getting out of bed.

It bugged me so much I ended up building an app[0] to force me to get up. If I didn't get up and scan my toothpaste barcode within a few mins of my alarm, I'd have to pay $10.

It also has cheat detection so I can't just turn off the phone to avoid getting up. Alarms are stored in the cloud and lock 1 hour before going off so they can't be changed.

Many of my users tell me they have ADHD so it seems likely I fall somewhere on the spectrum.

Ask HN: Anyone get notified of GCP ending support for older versions of Node.js?

While viewing one of my cloud functions in the Google Cloud console, I noticed a banner at the top saying:> Node.js 14 will be deprecated on Jan 30, 2024. Please update this function using the latest runtime version available.I searched through my email to make sure, but I received zero notifications about this. It's not a huge deal, but it's pretty annoying. I also couldn't easily find what...

Looks great! I’ll probably use it just for the chapters alone. Huberman lab only has “clickable” YouTube but I find I end up getting distracted while I’m on there. This is way better.

Unrelated: I noticed you’re not using the App Store banner on your landing page. Why is that? Difficulty tracking conversions?

Yes, but poorly connected is a superset of being poor.

One could not be poor but still be poorly connected

Congrats on the MVP!

Did you have a hard time convincing users to sign up for TestFlight? If so, how'd you overcome it?
