Now the app developers have to see if they can have that as the default privacy setting for anyone who uses the app and this should be truly private info after that.

This app is interesting however, users are signing up for this with the idea that no one among their friends get to know about it. Unfortunately, facebook enthusiastically shows everyone using various apps.

Not sure if facebook has a privacy setting to prevent others from knowing the apps I use but if they do then the developers of this app should inform this to their users.

If facebook does not have a way for me to hide from my friends the apps I use then IMO, facebook should have this option.

I can think of quite a few use cases for use in our products. I especially like the idea of broadcasting a downtime if we intend to go down for maintenance. Also, apart from sending emails to our users about new feature launches, we can use this to make sure our users don't miss out on the new features.

I'm from India and it made more financial sense for us to go back. But, a lot of friends from my batch are still there post the 6 months (many from the north). It's definitely cheaper than North America and if you can find the right developers, nothing like it. And unlike us (30+ hour travel back to India) it's more convenient for you to visit your country and be back in Chile.

It will take a while to realize knowing English would not really help you much. IMO, it's important that you know some basic Spanish. But this isn't a deal breaker as I did not know any Spanish but eventually figured out enough words to get the job done.

We were part of the first batch of Start-Up Chile. It's a good program if you are really at the very first stage of your product. Can you get by easily with the maximum salary you can take? As far as living by on the maximum salary is concerned, it can be a little difficult but it's possible. You might have to try and cook your own food at least a few times a week or may be eat at a cheaper place. The accommodation allowance is different from the salary and is more than enough.

Are the required events very time consuming? The process for reimbursement can be a bit time consuming but if you start saving bills for your expenses and not scamper at the last minute when its time to reimburse, it would help. As I find out now, saving receipts right from the beginning is a habit I would suggest every entrepreneur to inculcate because once you start running your business it's important to stay organized. It helps in filing your tax returns.

Is it easy to find local talents with good English skills? Local talent with good english skills is hard to find.

What's the average salary for an intermediate web developer? Won't be able to answer that as we did not hire any local developer.

I guess I wasn't clear on my question. I do know how to track events but I need to know if that's the right thing to do. Advertisers usually look at 'pageviews' while advertising but single page ajax apps do not garner enough page views even with high traffic for the simple reason that once the user logs in the page is never refreshed.

So, is it ok to increment the page view count each time a new page is loaded via ajax?

I've heard of it but never really used it. Before I use any particular analytics tool, I want to know if it's right to track ajax page refreshes as a new page view. Any ideas on that?

combine that with the fact that the High Replication Datastore will most probably never see a downtime and you tend to be ok with the cost (of course as a app engine customer, you would always want lower costs, but the current write cost is not a deal breaker).

The only problem here is that "delete" is considered a write and when you want to delete data you just cannot accept the fact that you need to pay for something you do not want to keep. I think GAE should definitely look into this aspect and try to get some cheaper alternatives for data deletion.

I've been developing on appengine for over 2 years now. Thanks to the platform, I've never been worried about traffic spikes. Whether you get profiled on TC or a celebrity tweets about your app, you know it will run. Given, you would not learn admin skills, but you'll learn a lot of other things.

I learnt how denormalized data in the datastore can help speed things up for your app. I learnt sharding thanks to app engine. The pricing has made me make use of memcache more often and trying to avoid hitting the datastore. When I look at it, I feel I've brought in more discipline in my code because of app engine. I am now in the habit of building APIs that would run instantly. If a http call takes too long, my instinct is to make it run as a background task and then return the result.

I've learnt all of these because I've been on App Engine. I can see a significant improvement in what I'm building now. The apps we build now, all our users say it's "fast and responsive". A lot of that credit goes to App Engine and the things it has taught me.

AWS has been around for longer. Appengine just moved out of beta. There are a lot of "serious" applications on app engine. Many applications have their infra distributed over multiple providers. The point is, terming an infra stack as great as App engine as made for non serious applications is a gross misunderstanding of what the app engine is capable of. You should first give it a try, develop an app and then make a statement.

Good and bad developers exist anywhere and everywhere. May be because India is a country of a billion people, even small percentages lead to a big number. So your chances of finding not so good developers are higher in India.

But that does not mean that India is all about cheap software development with code that never works. Outsource your projects to the right people and you get things right. There are pretty good companies such as Slideshare, Zoho and most of the big guns like Google, Microsoft, Adobe with offices in India where great products have been developed by Indian developers.

All I say is, give developers in India the kind of money they really deserve (which is still significantly less than what their American counterparts command; it's more to do with the lower cost of living than anything else really) and you would get software that matches international standards.

Nice. But, I've always felt, if there was no time and money restriction, work would move at a lot slower pace than otherwise. Which would in turn impact our ability to launch. Has that happened to you?
