Re:How Not to Bomb Your Offer Negotiation on Monday September 12, 2016 @07:03PM (#12484378)
In the linked post, he mentions that the flood gates opened after he got the offer from Google.

So, does one keep the recruiter waiting and apply for other companies telling everyone that you have an offer with Google? How long of a leeway does one have in such negotiations? How long can you keep the recruiter waiting before they close the gates? Is it a good job search strategy?

Ask HN: Developers – How did you learn to say NO?

Your boss comes to you with some highly improbably task and you say YES.Your Project Manager comes to you asking if something could be done and you say YES. And then you have a unbelievable deadline looming over you for the next few days.Your peers ask you for some help on a task that they had been struggling with - for days. You say YES and then you end up having to feel the burn for their...

Ask HN: What do it take to be a full stack developer?

I am a software developer with varying levels of interest and proficiency in front-end/back-end development. I am would consider myself very good at Python & MySQL. I do data analysis and visualization. I have been writing quite a bit of code in JavaScript/NodeJS in the past few months. I am good at HTML and I would be able to find my way through CSS layouts and the likes. Would I be...

It is not unlimited, but there is a separate lottery for 20,000 visas for advanced degree holders.
This resonates with the advice by @mindvirus about a year ago when I was starting to look for a job.[1] I would definitely say that it had helped me see more responses from prospective employers.

Re:Large Companies Game H-1B Visa Program on Tuesday November 10, 2015 @02:30PM (#10541742)
One thing that helps these 'mediocre-to-hopeless' students get by -- are the so called consulting companies that get them short-time contracting positions in major companies like Intel/Amazon/Intuit/../.. etc.

They fake their profiles with a many years of fake experience, fake internships and try to fake the background checks as well. These consulting companies take care of all the visa processing etc for these guys.

The major companies benefit from not having to take care of all the hiring processes, visa processes, employee benefits, holidays/vacations for the contractors. They also consider these employees expendable. When something unfortunate happens and these guys end up getting pink slips, the consultancies get them another job at another employer willing to take them.

I found a related article on New York Times but not a exact research paper. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/03/health/03aging.html?pagewa...
I have started doing this now. However, isn't this something which eats into the personal-time of a person? Why should software eat my world?

Assuming I do get a good job now, I would be writing code for them, which most likely would be closed source. If I ever want to switch companies after a few years, should I start writing such code samples again?

The thing which irks me most is when companies do not even bother to look at my profile without open-source contributions.

Ask HN: I'm not a rockstar coder. Do I have a place in SV?

I am an excellent coder. But I am not a rockstar/ninja/10x dev. I don't consume code all the time. I don't breathe out code all the time. I don't have pet projects to show. I don't have a project portfolio. I don't contribute to open source projects. I like to explore, travel, run, hike, kayak and a bunch of other things whenever I am not at work.I just completed my Masters degree in Computer...

He mentioned recognizing it as a national day and not necessarily a 'holiday'. There are numerous days when students pay their respect to a great personality and continue with their regular activities. This could be one such day.

Moreover I read somewhere that Dr. Kalam himself wanted people to work harder on his death day and not take a holiday. Not sure if that is misattributed to him, but I'm sure his thoughts would have been similar.

I'm deeply saddened by the demise of Dr. Kalam. He inspired me a lot when I was a kid back in school. His books "Ignited Minds" and "Wings of Fire" are highly inspiring and are filled with hope for India.

His passion was to inspire and ignite young minds and encourage them to propel India on a global scale. His numerous interactions with school children, political leaders, industrialists and scholars have a common theme - India can do it.

On small example of how he always tries to look out for the benefit of everybody: "A school in Madurai had organized an event and invited Dr. Kalam as the chief guest. He initially declined the invitation saying that it would benefit only private school students. Then the school had to modify their plans and invited over 500 students from various other government schools in the vicinity to attend the event too. Only then did he agree to be the chief guest of the event. "

Re:Ask HN: Inspiring female programming blogs? on Monday July 27, 2015 @10:41AM (#9955434)
While not a blog, Girl Develop It [1] is an active community that encourages female developers and provides them with numerous opportunities to learn the craft via classes and community support. A number of chapters exist in various cities throughout the US and there are high chances of it being present in your city as well.

Re:Steam hit by major security breach on Monday July 27, 2015 @02:14AM (#9953622)
A few examples of unacceptable practices followed by certain websites include:

- Sending your password to your email in plain text. - Allowing user to set new password just by answering simple personal details like DOB, Zip code etc which might be known to a number of your friends and family members.

Often it is simple enough to implement a password reset functionality with a reset-link that contains a GUID which expires after a certain period of time. It could be more secure, but is a tradeoff between providing greater security and a longer reset process.

One of the major risks of websites with very naive reset procedures is that many people use the same password with multiple websites. So if a user's password gets compromised on a site, then the attacker can easily try those passwords with other services and gain easy access to user data.

I'm not sure if you'd be able to get any responses to this posting unless you provide further details about you, a portfolio link or a Github profile link. You might be able to get a few more eyeballs by posting on the "Who wants to be hired?" thread [1] posted by the 'whoishiring' account on the first day of each month.

Re:Steam hit by major security breach on Monday July 27, 2015 @01:43AM (#9953546)
As part of one of my academic projects, I did a bit of research on password reset functionality of about a dozen major websites. It was interesting to note that each and every website had implemented it in a different manner. So much difference in the process and the lack of a standard procedure was shocking, though understandable. It was interesting to brainstorm and discuss about the rationale behind each of the password reset process and the User Experience decisions involved.

I also noticed a frighteningly large number of small websites that get 'password reset' absolutely wrong, compromising their users' accounts. It is something that is very difficult to get right, unless thought through completely before implementation. Whenever I signup for a new user account on a fairly new website, I try to use a dummy throwaway password on the first attempt and then try the password reset option to see if the website is actually serious about security. It is like a litmus test for me to decide about continuing to use the website and trusting them with more of my data.

Interesting stuff! I enjoy watching movies with friends at the cinema hall together and discuss about the movies soon after. Recently when I made a decision to move abroad, I was wondering if there was a feature that would give us a similar experience of watching a movie together.

I was thinking of using Skype screen-sharing with friends, where one user plays the movie and acts as the movie-host taking control of the pause/play, seeking controls and others watching the movie on Skype via the host's screen. Doing this provides us with the option of chatting real-time about the movie too - like how we'd do when seated next to each other in the cinema hall. The issue with this is that it would take up a lot of bandwidth to stream a movie and then share it with others simultaneously.

This - Showgoers - claims to solve many of these issues, so I'd definitely give it a try. One main downside is that Netflix still isn't available for users in my home-country India. And with limited movie-collections on Netflix and the other on-demand video services, I'd almost-never again be able to get the experience of watching a 'newly-released' movie at the cinema hall with a bunch of close friends.
