Fortunately there have been zero security incidents involving American companies this past month…

Oh wait.

Re:The October inflection point for vibe game development on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:07PM (#50280906)
AI, as we know it today (GPT3), came out not even 4 years ago. Of course, you’re not going to see a movie or book yet (especially since it was nowhere near today when it came out). I feel like people forget this.

This reads like Clifford Stoll’s “the Internet will never really matter” article - and the internet was already 40 years old and the web server was already older than ChatGPT is today. Your post sounds a bit like this sentence: “ The truth is no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works.”

Where was the TV in 4 years? Facebook? The telephone?

I don’t know if you are correct, but the bar of “cultural artifact” created from a system that just barely came to be and who’s capabilities wouldn’t even be close to this until like 3 months ago, is just a really really early thing to make a decision on already.

That’s totally fine since it’s a different family. The new iPhone mini is much larger than the iPhone 4 but its mini in its current family line.
5.5% of Nvida's revenue comes from consumer gaming cards. That's like saying Nintendo is a playing card company because they still sell playing cards.

The economist literally called Nvidia the "Central Bank of AI". https://www.economist.com/interactive/briefing/2026/09/03/nv...

I'd argue that Nvidia is the biggest and most important AI company in the world.

Just want to check, do you mean American pricing? It starts at $1999 not $2999, which is surprisingly competitive with the Fold 8. (Of course, Samsung discounts the shit of the Fold in ways Apple never does).

This is an unhelpful comment. What socialist policies has he enacted? (I live here btw)
Re:Stripe Clinches over $7B Deal to Buy AI Firm OpenRouter on Sunday August 16, 2026 @11:17PM (#49326208)
Yea, I totally get why they want to be in this space (especially if you see transaction volume becoming more agentic), but why buy it? Why not do what Cloudflare or Vercel or AWS, etc did and just build your own?

Stripe already has killer APIs and knows how to build API infrastructure at Extreme scale, it still has developer cred after all these years, they are already Kings of multiplexing to different sources -- so why not just build your own LLM gateway?

My only guesses are: they want to buy the traffic instead of trying to organically grow it (but I feel like Stripe would get the volume anyway because of name rec), they want to buy the revenue and think they can dramatically reduce COGs because of efficiencies, buying the relationships with the frontier labs (who all dogfood their LLMs in pseudo-private on OR), or... something else?

That's the part I'm confused about.

Re:America's Big Cities Are Rapidly Losing Kids on Monday July 27, 2026 @12:19PM (#49071798)
As somebody who grew up in NYC, I am so grateful I did when I speak to people who grew up elsewhere. By the age of 15, I had infinite freedom, especially since all my HS friends came from all 5 boroughs. I'd go see movies with friends in Brooklyn, go to their apartments on the Upper West Side, hang out at museums or parks -- meanwhile my suburban friends were at the mercy of their parents driving them places.

I love seeing how resilient NYC kids are, like the 8 year old who folds his own stroller or the 7 year olds who are pros at the subway. This independence is both terrifying (for parents) and inspiring (it preps them early in life).

My first year at Cornell, I remember every freshman kind of losing their mind with the freedom of being away from home (getting super drunk, not controlling themselves, never self-selecting to "stay in, not go out, for the night") --- except for the New Yorkers who would constantly think, "What's the big deal?"

The hard part of raising kids in the city is it's extremely expensive. But my wife and I are pretty focused on, hell or high water, on making it work in Brooklyn - so we'll see how it goes.

Re:Patreon laying off 20% of staff on Friday July 24, 2026 @02:14PM (#49039592)
How does adding $200k back to payroll help pay for 96 employee salaries (plus benefits which tend to be an invisible 25-30% on top of salaries)?

Me too. I have the same spec model (M5 Max with 125gb of ram) and it reports as 32gb.
Dude, just give up and admit you misread the point in the most negative bad faith way possible.
Ooo this is cool. It reminds me of AppleScript. Did you guys use that as inspiration for this?
Re:Fable 5 Is Back on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @07:16PM (#48754393)
Stock value?
I bet you that nothing changed with how Fable 5 is run.

"Anthropic has agreed to proactively detect and address security risks associated with the models" LOL, this was already happening.

This clown car administration just keeps making shit up and then backpedalling in a way that just leaves everything worse.

Sounds like myrmidon would have gleefully bought a Volkswagon Bug in 1941.
Re:Om Malik has died on Friday June 26, 2026 @12:32AM (#48682340)
Mods, we should have a black bar for this.

He was a deeply influential person, who also was amazingly talented and a wonderful human being. The trifecta!

I sadly never met him, but even typing the word “was” above made me have the deepest sigh.

Re: on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @11:59PM (#48668688)
I think this is totally a fair way to do this. I know HN sometimes grumbles about this type of pricing, but totally get it. You’re not taking anything away, you’re just charging for new features after 1 year they paid. They don’t lose access.

(It’s like back when we had Photoshop 5 and then Photoshop 6 came out).

As long as you mention that security updates will be free, I think this is a good plan. It’s how you get indie devs paid to keep working on products.

Re:Steam Machine on Tuesday June 23, 2026 @02:34PM (#48649348)
The thing I'm most excited about here (other than Yay! Valve!) is that this will bleed towards making projects like Bazzite even better.
Re:Fired by Google for creating the Google workspace CLI on Tuesday June 23, 2026 @02:31PM (#48649304)
Yikes. I see Justin posted this, and I'm sure he can't say much - but this is an absolutely insane story.

Google has gone from encouraging 20% time (to create amazing projects like this) to firing people for doing it.

There seems to be some true maliciousness going on at Google. You have this, you have the open source Gemini CLI getting replaced with a shittier closed source Antigravity CLI, etc... etc... What is going on there?

Re:GLM 5.2 vs. Opus on Monday June 22, 2026 @12:42PM (#48632564)
Or...

you go to OpenRouter and pay

$0.98 / $3.08per 1M for GLM 5.2 vs $5 / $25per 1M for Opus.

GLM 5.2 gives you OPTIONALITY so you can run it locally, but you can still just pay somebody for it.

Seth, Neil and I will be around all day to answer questions if you have any. Please let us know!

Hola HN!Long time lurker, sometimes commentor, first time poster here. I’ve been working alongside my two co-founders and a few colleagues on a project I’m excited (and a little nervous) to share with you all!Like many of us, I’ve lived a tortured existence with AI coding (is it vibes?) over the past few months - I think November was a big moment with this. But, one thing I’ve noticed after...

Re:OpenAI hit with lawsuit by Florida AG over AI risks on Monday June 01, 2026 @06:13PM (#48363343)
I get the sentiment but Obama won his second term in 2012 (12 years ago) and the last Democratic governor was in 1998 (28 years ago!)

Florida hasn't been purple in a long time.

Re:OpenAI hit with lawsuit by Florida AG over AI risks on Monday June 01, 2026 @06:01PM (#48363242)
This one is tricky, because FL/DeSantis is running against Trump on this position. Trump is the biggest booster of data center build-outs and AI supremacy. A Trump-friendly judge might hurt the odds of this lawsuit succeeding.

Isn't tanstack the new hotness now? Or is it Vite? Or is it htmx?

You have definitely not. Go ahead, try taking a screenshot of a movie playing on Netflix on your pixel right now.
