Résumé/CV: https://www.nfriedly.com/Nathan-Friedly-Resume.pdf

Email: [email protected]

Hands-on engineering leader, full stack JavaScript/Node.js expert with a wide breadth of other languages and significant AI skills. Over 20 years of experience building strong engineering cultures and high-quality software. Shipped apps, websites, frameworks, libraries, and APIs that serve millions of users across billions of sessions and trillions of events.

Passionate about building a strong engineering culture, automating everything, and delivering superior software that creates value and delights users.

Recognized expert in JavaScript/Node.js web development, ranked in the top 1% of JS developers worldwide[1]. Contributed code to Node.js core and hundreds of npm modules. Authored express-rate-limit and set-cookie-parser, each downloaded from npm over 250 million times per month, alongside numerous other modules in JavaScript and TypeScript.

Currently working on mobile and web, primarily in Objective-C, TypeScript, and Rust, plus some Swift for iOS, Java and Kotlin for Android, Dart for Flutter, and Go (Golang) for the backend. Also keeping an eye on WASM, IoT, WebSockets, and other interesting intersections. Some experience with other languages including C++, C#, Python, Ruby, and more.

Primarily led teams small teams (3~7), with some experience managing larger teams (30+). Worked with businesses ranging from startups to mega-corps in a wide variety of fields including retail, e-commerce, healthcare, finance, security, education, gaming, and more.

Interested in working on a variety of areas of development including fullstack, frontend, backend, web, mobile (Android/iOS), desktop (Windows/Linux/MacOS), systems programming, and embedded/IoT.

Cautiously optimistic about Artificial Intelligence & Large Language Models. Trained AI/ML models from scratch with Scikit Learn while at IBM Watson, and more recently built a 144GB "home lab" server running llama.cpp and then Strata, with a variety of LLMs such as Qwen, Muse Glimmer, and Gemma. Projects so far have include image renaming, Home Assistant management, and a local coding agent for open source work, with quite a few more in mind.

I treat coding agents/harnesses (Claude, OpenCode, Pi/OMP) like hyperactive interns: high output, but needs close review and significant guidance. While not perfect, they do improve my work overall. I'm also happy to hand-write things when necessary or appropriate.

I enjoy working and I'm willing to take on whatever job needs done: from engineering to sales to sweeping floors; leadership or individual contributor.

Why would they? Postgres is free and does an amazing job.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:53PM (#50277953)
I look for touchscreens when looking for a cheap windows laptop for someone because they tend to be better quality screens (IPS, decent brightness, etc.) instead of some awful TN panel that's barely visible in a well-lit room.

I don't really expect anyone to use it as a touchscreen, but if they do, at least that will work too.

The original Pi Zero was $5, although it probably uses more power than an esp32.

Gizmodo thinks it will have at least 12GB RAM, but it sounds more like an educated guess than a confirmed fact:

Re:OpenCode 2.0 on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:16AM (#50104026)
You're not wrong, and I predominately use a TUI at work where I'm actually at the computer for ~8 hours a day.

But I use OpenCode / OpenChamber for personal stuff where I might only get 20 minutes at my computer before I have to go do something else. So the web interface and especially the mobile app get more use from me there. It's kind of wild to be working on a project while walking my dog or washing dishes or something along those lines.

I also used the desktop OpenChamber app once recently because it has a built-in web browser that the agent can fully control (unlike, for example, Gemini in Chrome).

Re:OpenCode 2.0 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:49PM (#50095877)
I've been using OpenCode 2.0 indirectly via OpenChamber 2.0 and I've been very happy with it.

Once I got past the initial hurdle of having to upgrade my server and clients all at once, everything has been smooth sailing.

Re:Pi 1.0 on Friday October 02, 2026 @08:36AM (#49932794)
I really like Pi, especially for when you're running a local model and your context is particularly limited. But even when running a big model, I think building up your environment to be exactly what you want can be really powerful.

When I was first getting started and didn't realize that ollama defaults to incredibly tiny amounts of context, Pi was the only harness that actually worked because the rest of them used up all of the context and then some with the system prompt. However, these days I've figure out llama.cpp and proper context sizes.

OpenChamber has been the real game-changer that caused me to switch back to OpenCode, though. I love being able to check in on it from my phone, a browser, etc. instead of having to be at my computer to get anything done.

Re:The "$60 Gaming PC" – AMD BC-250 (2025) on Sunday September 06, 2026 @12:11PM (#49587921)
Not sure why you got downvoted for this - all but the cheapest monitors include DisplayPort because DisplayPort is both technically superior to HDMI and royalty-free.

The only thing HDMI really has going for it TV's/home theater equipment. (And that's partially because most of the manufacturers are part of the HDMI forum, so they're the ones receiving the royalties that everyone else pays to use HDMI.)

Re:Play Store blocks AuroraStore, hurting GrapheneOS users on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @11:32PM (#49531398)
AuroraStore is/was really nice for running purchased games on Android-based game consoles (Retroid Pocket, Ayn Odin, etc.) because a lot of games seem to be incorrectly marked as incompatible with those devices.

Play Store won't let me install them, but AuroraStore will, and most of the time they work fine after that.

For example, I have Balatro running on my Ayn Thor this way.

To be fair, I had that experience with my first iPod. As soon as I got it, I synced it with my computer and loaded up a ton of songs on it. This took a while.

Some time later, I connected it to my dad's computer to put a couple more songs on it. The first thing it did when I hit "sync" was delete everything on the iPod.

I learned that day that "sync" meant something different to Apple than it did to me.

I'm sure it gave me some kind of prompt but it was not a clear "hey this is going to delete everything" prompt.

The NYT article they link to is worth looking at, and I believe it's free for everyone: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/06/21/us/trucks-suv...
Re:GLM 5.2 vs. Opus on Monday June 22, 2026 @01:57PM (#48633575)
I'm not the person you asked, but if they're running in their own local hardware, then it might just be a lot slower than what the big providers run their models on. System RAM is a lot cheaper than VRAM, especially if you bought it last year.
Re:Usbliter8 an A12/A13 SecureROM Exploit on Saturday June 20, 2026 @11:35AM (#48609980)
This is awesome news! It isn't a jailbreak in and of itself, but it is the first step.

Right now we only have a reliable jailbreak (checkm8) for up to iOS 18 (and that's only thanks to one iPad model). Some app developers are pretty aggressive about dropping support for older iOS versions.

This affects iPhone XR, XS, 11, SE 2nd gen, and a smattering of iPads. Many of these devices got the iOS 27 beta and will likely see future iOS versions for at least another year or two.

Edit: here's the affected iPads:

* iPad Pro 11" (gen 1-2)

* iPad Pro 12.9" (gen 3-4)

* iPad mini (gen 5)

* iPad Air (gen 3)

* iPad (gen 8-9)

I think I see the problem here.

Re:New 10 GbE USB adapters are cooler, smaller, cheaper on Saturday April 25, 2026 @12:15PM (#47902543)
I repaired device like that a while back - it only took two half-cent resistors and a few minutes of soldering to make it compatible with standard USB-C cables and chargers.
> Well, if it degrades to 90% after three years, and let’s extrapolate to 81% after another two to three years,

That sounds like a phone battery, not an EV battery. Modern EVs should last 15-20 years before seeing significant degredation.

Yes, I absolutely understand that. I'm refuting the idea that it's not possible to do with a family and kids.
Re:Drunk Post: Things I've Learned as a Senior Engineer on Wednesday April 22, 2026 @09:28AM (#47863327)
My wife and I have kids and live on a single income, and we're on track to retire in between ages 45 and 50.

We live in Ohio, and I suppose we would qualify as frugal and having cheap hobbies. But I certainly don't feel like we're missing out on a lot.

We also set aside over $1,000 a month for giving, with some of it going to various individuals and organizations automatically and some of it just waiting for when we see a need.

A SEPP plan let's you get the money early and penalty-free from a 401k and an IRA. And the saved medical receipts let you take some money out of a HSA at any point for reimbursement, also penalty-free.

FWIW, the ordering page lets you also choose AMD Ryzen 350 / HX 370. It's not the Strix Halo chips you're hoping for, but it is something.
