You are all getting a first row seat to watching the death of an industry.
I wonder where are all those AI apologists who have been touting here for years that jobs will not go away?
PG has become pretentious and doesn’t allow people to disagree with him. Anyone following him on X can confirm that, where he chooses to reply to only certain replies with weaker arguments or just refuting the strong ones..
Don’t meet your heroes I guess…
Don’t listen to him, people like that will always complain, yet will never upgrade or pay for your product. He does not have a problem with your price but the mere fact that you are trying to sell something. Devs are like that.
Just differentiate signal from noise. Listen to your target audience not random internet comments
I am working on a discussion board for HN’s Who is hiring.
Too many times I have been burned by applying to scam listings or people who are just to self-promote and use people who want a job as a marketing channel (looking at you BetterStack, fu in particular).
I want people to be able to discuss and flag companies which are lying or just a waste of time, yet HN refuses to do anything about it and doesn’t allow threads as discussions and removes comments.
Hit me up if you want on the beta testers lists, already got a couple of people.

Scam of a company. Don’t bother applying, they only use this for self-promotion and marketing.
They keep posting this each month, without actually hiring anyone. I know several people (incl. me) who have filled out their lengthy application and not one of them received even an auto-rejection email.
But they like posting blogs and quoting PG. :)
It is a joke what Who is hiring has become, a bunch of ghost listings.
Who is hiring has become a scam. I followed it for years and lately I noticed a large cohort of companies (including YC startups) doing shadow listings. The same positions being constantly advertised, month by month, not being filled in this job market?
I hardly doubt it is legit. I do not know why they are doing it, are they scraping data or just showing off, some are plain scammers but it is visible and HN doesn’t help by not allowing discussions about it.
My suggestion is to have a separate discussion thread so people can be aware of it and share their experiences.

I assume these are the "famous" AI productivity gains they all talked about =)
Still down, looks like it will be down for the whole day. Looks like time to call it a day...

I am surprised no one has commented on this. Perhaps it is not visible by the title that it is the CEO of Anthropic being quoted here.
The article was a positive surprise, I didn't expect such an informative outlook, covering both the doomer and optimist views.
I cannot believe that there are people praising Merkel with a straight face. She is literally a laughing stock in Europe, I put her as the poster boy for immigration crisis together with the energy crisis. The only thing she did was shove problems further in the future not caring about the consequences.
Finally vindicated! For years we were arguing with the Apple fanboys here on HN about what Apple is doing and how it is wrong, immoral and illegal. Glad to see something starting to happen.
I just wonder what are the next excuses going to be?
This list is a pure fallacy of statistical understanding. Skewed data and cherry-picking while also being strengthened by our subjective biases. I would appreciate the list way more if it also included founders who applied but were rejected, or for any other reason were not invested in.
For stuff like this I recommend the book, May Contain Lies by Alex Edmans, he does a fantastic job explaining how most of the time we seek data to confirm our hypotheses, instead of seeking a hypotheses that confirms our data.
Well written, I agree with the basic premise of the idea, I just think the changes will be even more dramatic.
A lot of us are stationary, thinking stuff and other people around us will be automated, but not us, “I am special”, well I fear a lot of people will find out just how much special they unfortunately are (not).
You won’t hear that here because HN is notoriously pro Apple for some reason, even though all the evidence points to Apple being the same, if not bigger evil than Google
As a person born in the middle class, I am quite sad to see it's extinction in realtime. Not sure what is the solution to this.
Says the guy who was in retirement for the last 6 years. Unbelievable how intelligent people can sometimes be so obtuse.
On wide screens the app is not centered, add some margin auto.
Scary to watch the pace of progress and how the whole industry is rapidly shifting.
I honestly didn’t believe things would speed up this much.
I had a lot of problems with getting Umami to work with Vercel, in the end I abandoned it and used Vercel Analytics.
First Umami was being blocked by all ad blockers and it caused my web app to crash, then I had to use some workaround which allowed it to work with ad blockers but stopped my Express app from sending responses back to the frontend.
It irritated me so much, because there is not enough documentation for it, although I did find multiple people reporting something similar like me. I just called quits on it, analytics shouldn't be that complex to setup if you are not self-hosting, the Vercel one is serving me okayish for now.

For the last year, everywhere I looked, I saw AI, even for minuscule stuff, it had AI slapped on it.So I joked around with my friends how the next big thing would be AI-powered toilet paper, and other similar ridiculous ideas. That's when I decided to make a simple satire app where every suggested idea, no matter how crazy, will "explain" how it can be AI-powered.I had fun making the app and...
Doesn't the cofounder role kinda lose its power when there are like 10 of them, or I don't know how many OpenAI cofounders there are, every day it feels like a new one emerges.
Doesn't matter if and how much they used OpenAI's models. The only important thing that matters is that they managed to disrupt the status quo, Silicon Valley will need to be more aware going forward.
It is so disheartening to see Europe's tech industry flounder so much. Living in Europe and then seeing how the salary gap with the USA is just increasing is flat out demoralising. However I do not see a way out until salaries start increasing.
I also came to comment the same thing. I cannot believe someone made a design choice to have it implemented that way with a straight face...
I might be rude for this comment, but can anyone explain what did Fei-Fei Li accomplish in AI to be considered a pioneer?
I read her autobiography and I still do not understand. The only thing she did was create the ImageNet dataset, by paying Amazon Mechanical Turk. Am I missing something?
I don’t understand how is she in the same breathe as Cunn, Goodfellow, Hinton, even Karpathy?
How do you intend to handle the comments section? Currently, most of the comments are either blatantly AI generated or just some linkedin congratulatory feedback.
Most people value critical feedback and interesting discussions, that is the main reason why all of us visit HN every day.
I do wonder how strong the Apple lobby is to be able to completely circumvent the App Store issue.
This feels like a Monty Python sketch if they are attacking Google for the Play Store while ignoring the elephant in the room which is Apple.
