Interesting fact: University of Southhampton developed 5D disks for dense data storage. The capability was acquired by the Arch Foundation which seeks to preserve data longterm. They donated one of the first 5D disks to Elon Musk who placed it in the red Tesla that he sent into Solar orbit on the first Falcon Heavy booster. The disk contains the Foundation Trilogy by Arthur C. Clarke.
Largest in recorded history is a bit of hyperbole. In the 1800s something like 80% of all Americans had the TB bacillus and of those that came down with TB a huge percentage died.

Man I would die of shame if I ever wrote something as bad as "it’s not yet clear if the increase in seismic activity is anything more than just an unusually high number of tremors."
Re:Why Is It So Hard to Share Links on LinkedIn? on Tuesday July 23, 2024 @06:38PM (#41051748)
All of my business comes from Linkedin. I get inbound leads from content I post to Substack. I then promote it with a pithy summary on Linkedin. I don't encounter any of the stuff in this article. I typically get 5-30K views of my posts and have 38K followers. I was in the first cohort of the LinkedIn Creator Accelerator program which was held the three months before I launched my SaaS. The secret to hacking the algorithm is no secret. Post original content four times a week. Because my SaaS is a data platform on cybersecurity and 95% of my followers are in cybersecurity I get tremendous engagement. I remember all the hacking community deriding Twitter when it launched. Back then the cool kids were on Digg. Now they are on Twitter deriding LinkedIn where they cannot pose as something they are not.
Remember when Cliff Stoll wrote a whole book about how the internet was over-hyped, Silicon Snake Oil? In 1995. We are in the same stage with AI.
Supademo is great for creating interactive demos. You record your screen then script out the actions a user would take. Super simple.
Now I envision a multi-story lunar habitat with a 30 foot diameter well that you have to run on to get from one level to the next. At least to get up. Getting down may just involve jumping down.
Re:What does startups expect from a intern on Saturday April 20, 2024 @09:28AM (#40097213)
Well, I hired my intern in January 2022. He used no-code to launch our product in March of '22. Now he is co-founder and CTO and still has a year to go in school!

Now combine this approach with concepts of no-code, which takes the task of writing lines of code out of the path from concept to production. An AI could easily create instructions that could be fed to bubble to create an app. Either bubble is already working on this or someone else is and bubble will miss the boat.

Re:Germany: Police seize bitcoins worth €2B on Tuesday January 30, 2024 @05:51PM (#39197062)
When are we going to stop calculating BTC total value by multiplying number of BTC times what is, let's face it, a spot price. There is no way you could sell 2 billion euros worth of BTC. You can't convert them into real property.
We have always been 100% remote. I have people who live in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, NC, IL, and CA. It's the only way to go.
Re:What Was ISDN? on Sunday January 14, 2024 @08:21AM (#38990144)
I launched RustNet in 1992 as "the first ISDN ISP in Michigan." We offered a blindingly fast internet speed of 125k! At the time Silicon Graphics had added an ISDN port to its latest workstation, which I had for the engineering design work we did. The launch of our ISP occurred at an industrial expo at Cobo Hall in Detroit. We were not set up yet so I talked to the product manager of the ISDN feature at SGI and he was kind enough to let me dial into his desktop workstation in his office. All I needed was to get Ameritech to drop an ISDN line into Cobo Hall. One trick we learned: if a regular dial-up customer complained about speeds we would call Ameritech to schedule that customer for ISDN. The phone company would remove something from the line (filter? impedance?) to prepare it for ISDN. Then we would cancel the order and the customer would get the full 56k from their modem.
Re:Writing Books Remains a Tough Way to Make a Living (2022) on Wednesday January 03, 2024 @12:09PM (#38856542)
I feel this. I write non-fiction in the tech industry. I start every project estimating the potential number of readers. My second book is the only one written for a particular profession. I calculated there were at least 20,000 people in the profession. Over 13 years it has sold about 2,000 copies. I have also written the only history of the IT security industry. I update it every year. It too only sells 2,000 copies per edition. Definitely not a way to make a living.
Re:Why I'm skeptical of low-code on Saturday December 30, 2023 @07:45PM (#38820769)
All I know is that I was quoted $50K from a Ukraine team to build an MVP, as long as I could provide detailed specs down to every function. I hired an intern who used bubble/airtable to build our product in two months and had ten paying customers in 6 months. After almost two years have yet to find a reason to move to a traditional stack. We have had 6 hours of down time in those two years thanks to bubble issues. I can live with that.
Re:De Novo Lipogenesis: Why People Don't Get Fat from Carbs on Thursday October 12, 2023 @10:24PM (#37865814)
Glanced through it. Just another CICO argument. Totally ignores that eating carbs makes you want more carbs, leads to being hungry in two hours and thus over eating.

Square is great. We use both Square and Stripe. Square pays the same day, a huge benefit over Stripe.
