News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

nenadst

try it with something more "obscure" like e.g. creating an OPC/Ua Server from scratch.

It fails spectacularly - the code wont even compile and there are many things missing to get a working solution.

probably not a good paper ...

has been criticised by several sources

one interesting comment :

Only about 65% of Japanese people have received 3 doses.

Cancer patients are more likely to receive 3 or more doses than the average person since they have more contact with the healthcare system.

Who’s most likely to die of cancer? Cancer patients.

There’s your correlation...

Re:Re-Evaluating GPT-4's Bar Exam Performance on Tuesday May 23, 2023 @08:40AM (#36043415)
"... when examining only those who passed the exam (i.e. licensed or license-pending attorneys), GPT-4’s performance is estimated to drop to ∼48th percentile overall, and ∼15th percentile on essays ..."

so this means that ChatGPT is right in the middle of the performance of licensed or license-pending attorneys.

and for essays its still better than 15 percent of the humans.

Still quite impressive ...

Re:Delphi 11 and C++Builder 11 Community Editions Released on Thursday April 27, 2023 @01:51PM (#35731978)
from their website ".... can now enjoy the milestone innovations of the 11 Alexandria Pro edition.."

which means that you cannot use "Client-Server" databases (Mysql, Postgres, etc.), only localhost access is supported.

you can use ZeosLib etc. but its just one more hurdle to take.

Re:10 years ago the Feds shut down Megaupload on Sunday February 27, 2022 @09:22AM (#30488676)
according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Music

there are lots of countries where you can not buy DRM free music from amazon (afaiu what the OP was referring to)

so the problem is how to find a shop where you can buy your super rare tracks ...

(i assume some will also be bootlegs or other fan-made recordings - you wont find those in a shop)

tldr version:

Principles are like rules:

you are either compliant or you are not. This gives rise to “bounded sets” of rule-followers and rule-enforcers rather than “centred sets” of people with shared values.2

Instead, I started thinking about properties:

qualities or characteristics of code rather than rules to follow.

Properties define a goal or centre to move towards. Your code is only closer to or further from the centre, and there is always a clear direction of travel.

.....

and then he gives a list of five properties that good architectures can aim for.

if you look at this tweet

..." The series in which this is published does not peer-review, and contains all of the last authors' work... ... that major papers are omitted in this "meta-analysis" "

So no peer-review,

written in a journal that has close ties to one of the authors

and omitted major papers that should have been included.

zettlr is also missing - opensource and really nice (also goog for zettelkasten)

https://github.com/Zettlr/Zettlr

at least in 2020 suicides in the US actually decreased ..

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2778234

15 years after Scrum was invented and 10 years after the Agile Manifesto someone writes such an article ?

I agree that knowledge about Agile was not widespread enough in 2011, but this reads like something from the early 90s.

Re:How to build a second brain as a software developer on Thursday November 11, 2021 @05:52PM (#29194286)
Missing from the list is Zettlr https://zettlr.com/ which is opensource, looks very nice and is built for the Zettelkasten method and has LaTeX integration.

Was quite useful for some university classes.

Re:RAD Studio 11 Alexandria on Saturday September 11, 2021 @03:37AM (#28490101)
I agree about the insane pricing.

If you want to use the Prof. version and still have DB-access then there exist some open source components like https://sourceforge.net/projects/zeoslib/

OTOH my 20-year project is still trucking along using D2010 and Dbisam as the DB-layer...

Re:Making SoA Tollerable on Monday March 01, 2021 @05:54AM (#26301511)
am i the only one expecting the article to be about Service oriented Architecture ? :-)
according to Tyler Black (1) who compiled all official numbers he could find there is no evidence of an increase in suicides for the US

https://twitter.com/tylerblack32/status/1357765466601775106

1) MD, Suicidologist, emergency psychiatrist and pharmacologist

I always thought that we still use a trie or (to save memory) ternary search trees for that..
here is some commentary from an epidemiologist https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1316511734115385344
Re:SageMath – Open-Source Mathematical Software System on Saturday June 13, 2020 @04:36PM (#23512468)
fyi from the website :

Since version 9.0 released in January 2020, SageMath is using Python 3.

Re:Delphi 10.4 released with big updates on Wednesday May 27, 2020 @05:17AM (#23321046)
finally : major Delphi Code Insight improvements using an separate LSP service.

HighDPI should work also better now (hopefully, they promised that already)

some new language features - custom managed records

and a breaking change (for the mobile editions) - unified memory mangement (aka no more ARC)

and lots of cross-platform and mobile updates which i dont use ..

http://docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/Sydney/en/What's_Ne...

from the article :

To calculate excess deaths, the FT has compared deaths from _all causes_ in the weeks of a location’s outbreak in March and April 2020 to the average for the same period between 2015 and 2019.

so they are not counting only coronavirus related deaths but all

Re:Funding for Covid-19 Projects on Sunday March 15, 2020 @05:45PM (#22587079)
just heard this on https://peterattiamd.com/peterhotez/

apparently Dr.Hotez has a Sars-1 candidate vaccine antigen which could be repurposed for Covid-19,

https://grantome.com/grant/NIH/R01-AI098775-03S1

but they don't have funding to move it to clinical trials ..

Re:Delphi's 25th Birthday on Saturday February 15, 2020 @03:28AM (#22334046)
sorry but remote database = postgres, mysql (or any relational db server)

that is ridiculous in 2020

and you only get that with the "enterprise edition"

"professional" only gets you embeded and localhost DB ?!?

I still have my old separate Firedac licence for an old project i support, but anybody new coming to this mess will just have a good lough and move on.

Re:SamyGO: Open-Source Firmware for Samsung TVs (2011) on Sunday December 29, 2019 @07:03AM (#21905474)
maybe something like https://pi-hole.net and/or some firewall rules could be used to stop all the offending traffic ?

Sounds easier than cutting physical lines..

Anybody using this and having success ?

Re:New Mac Pro on Monday June 03, 2019 @04:04PM (#20087901)
was expecting to see a "april fools" banner to pop out any second during the segment (for the look, not the specs which seem quite interesting though (very) pricey)
Re:Oculus Rift S on Wednesday March 20, 2019 @03:24PM (#19445850)
If inside-out tracking is ok then why not go WMR -

the new HP Reverb sounds actually nice ..

2160 x 2160 px per eye - 114 FOV 90Hz LCD

but the price is also high ~599$

Re:24 years of Delphi and Delphi 10.3.1 is out Today on Friday February 15, 2019 @03:46PM (#19174551)
unfortunately "Enterprise DBs" means also Postgresql, Mysql, SQL Server etc. (anything Client/Server)

you can probably just use another Framework like (free) ZeosDB (http://zeoslib.sourceforge.net/)

or some paid ones e.g. from Devart (https://www.devart.com/dac.html)

but still, its frustrating to have to use something else for such basic functionality ...

Sorry (even as i am tempted to do this quiz), but ...

<paranoia mode on>

Is this sponsored by (the defunct) Cambridge Analytica or some similar entity ?

Isn't this exactly how many of those companies operate ?
