Saving all of you a click: the article doesn't go into a concrete explanation of why they're not closing the last Blockbuster.

It has a theory, however:

>One possible explanation for the store’s long life: Bend is in a region that the city’s mayor, Sally Russell, describes as having “huge expanses with really small communities” that often do not have easy access to the high-speed internet necessary for content streaming.

>Many residents of outlying areas stop at Blockbuster during their weekly trips to town to run errands, drawn in part by the store’s seven-day rental policy, Ms. Russell said, adding that the store’s last-in-the-world status could even give it a lift.

When exactly was Jesus born?
The Game Boy Advance SP does not take batteries. It has its own, rechargable li-on battery inside. You're probably thinking of the regular Advance.
Re:Linux desktop market share over 3% on Friday September 01, 2017 @11:39AM (#15149384)
Yeah, awesome, what about the tens of thousands of other laptop models on the market?
No more internet for you today, young man.
Re:Ubuntu on Windows on Thursday March 31, 2016 @04:34AM (#11395778)
I don't think anyone has tried it, but is there a reason why it couldn't be done?

(...)one key difference is that you don't run Mac OS X as a server operating system or on the cloud.

It's actually a pretty decent server environment.

Barring some kind of medical emergency requiring CPR, it's safe to say quite a lot of people have never been rebooted.

Why not create a series of (edit: autoupdating) symlinks like ~/today and ~/yesterday? Just a thought.

Re:Ask HN: What would you want in an ideal web browser? on Monday August 17, 2015 @05:46AM (#10072082)
Interesting concept, but it seems needlessly complicated. What's to prevent websites like, say, the Guardian from declaring themselves as applications?
Re:Announcing Apple IIgs System 6.0.2 on Tuesday August 04, 2015 @04:53AM (#10002286)
Man, how cool would it be if Apple talked to the devs of this and officially released it as a nostalgia treat or something?
Or it could have been set as a sensible default, since an overwhelming majority of users despise autoplaying videos on sites other than Youtube?
Re:Soyuz Users Manual (2012) [pdf] on Friday July 17, 2015 @05:26AM (#9901878)
If Kerbal Space Program taught me anything, it's that space and rocketry aren't as complicated as they seem.

When in doubt, add more boosters.

Re:Ask HN: How to learn about the history of computing? on Tuesday July 07, 2015 @07:45AM (#9844802)
If you want a very detailed account of the super early history of electronic computing, George Dyson's "Turing's Cathedral: The Origins of the Digital Universe."

http://www.amazon.com/Turings-Cathedral-Origins-Digital-Univ...

Other great titles I'd recommend is Steven Levy's "Hackers" http://www.amazon.com/Hackers-Heroes-Computer-Revolution-Ann... and Phil Lapsley's "Exploding the Phone" http://www.amazon.com/Exploding-Phone-Untold-Teenagers-Outla...

Hope you enjoy!

I can lend you terrorcore.ovh, it's currently sitting unused.
Re:A game whose source code fits in one tweet on Tuesday June 30, 2015 @05:05AM (#9803857)
That's only true in very specific cases: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web/HTML/Element/p

The start tag is mandatory. The end tag may be omitted if the <p> element is immediately followed by an <address>, <article>, <aside>, <blockquote>, <div>, <dl>, <fieldset>, <footer>, <form>, <h1>, <h2>, <h3>, <h4>, <h5>, <h6>, <header>, <hr>, <menu>, <nav>, <ol>, <pre>, <section>, <table>, <ul> or another <p> element, or if there is no more content in the parent element and the parent element is not an <a> element.

Re:Ask HN: Node.js or Sinatra on Tuesday December 09, 2014 @06:20AM (#8722167)
Sinatra is better performance-wise IIRC.

Then again, Node comes with the convenience of having the same programming language on the both the front and the back end of things.

If you don't need performance, it's just preference. Stick to Sinatra if you want to bang out the app quickly.
