Re:Witch – macOS window switcher replacement on Friday June 02, 2023 @10:30AM (#36165585)
I purchased witch several years ago, and my main complaint is that it takes a long time to show all my windows if there's a lot of applications windows, and this did not use to be the case. It's fine if I'm switching between windows in one application, but if I say, want to show all the windows open on my computer, it takes 3+ seconds to display the interface.

I discussed it with the Many tricks support, and apparently it's a problem with MacOS

As someone learning hindi, I'm looking forward to trying this.

Re:Intellectual Loneliness on Friday December 31, 2021 @11:00PM (#29755386)
The solution is to be good teacher and learner - there's so many fascinating interests these days and things i don't know about. And I want to share things from my niche too.
As with all things, there are trade-offs, nothing will ever be perfect and we should solutions if it improves tings. How many people die per 1000 km traveled? Accidents? Injuries?
Re:A lot of people are getting the OnlyFans story wrong on Friday August 20, 2021 @11:01AM (#28246810)
Ok, well for those of us that didn't read the exact same set of articles you did, you sound like a guy making stuff up...so send some links.
Re:Must-read psychology books on Monday July 12, 2021 @10:24AM (#27810592)
Have any of the books in this list hit problems with replication, or later finding out the science isn't so good?
Re:Must-read psychology books on Monday July 12, 2021 @10:24AM (#27810580)
I read the whole thing and you're basically right. I enjoyed it still, but it's a book where you get 80% of the insghts in the first chapter. I also heard some of the expiriemtns mentioned in the book fell afoul of the replication crisis.
I really enjoy using Transmit, and feel bad that I don't know about many Mac devs making great products. I also like Many Tricks and Alfred. Anyone have a list of other top mac developer houses?
Are the second, third and fourth rungs so horrible? The bottom of the ladder is pretty bad, but people going to uni are unlikely to be on the bottom. As far as computer science goes, you can be a total fuck up and still easily live an upper middle class life.
Re:LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online on Wednesday May 05, 2021 @10:34PM (#27058522)
I watched liveleak to see people get beheaded, not for conspiracies.
Is there any real policy options we can pursue? We can't assign mandatory girlfriends, and even if we could, they may not find it was what they wanted.

I can help the poor and destitute much more effectively than I can wealthy people with vague psychological issues, and they also have more immediate needs. We all have limited time on our hands, and in terms of effectiveness, working with incels seems like something that's a lot of effort for very little benefit.

tl;dr "This model shows that the cumulative number of death sentences previously imposed in the same county is a strong predictor of the number imposed in a given year. Results raise troubling substantive implications: The number of death sentences in a given county in a given year is better predicted by that county’s previous experience in imposing death than by the number of homicides."

My (Indian) wife says that the media just print the good things their party does because if they printed dirt about their opponents, those people would print dirt about them.

Wow, I didn't even notice what it sounded like.
What do you mean by problems at Costco? I've visited a few of them and I can't say people behave at the ones in California any different than the ones in Texas. It's crowded but everyone speaks english and follows the rules.
Re:Ask HN: What data visualization tools do you use? on Friday March 05, 2021 @10:26AM (#26357832)
No, it's great. I assumed Power BI cost a lot of money and wouldn't have considered it.

Ask HN: What data visualization tools do you use?

My Tableau license at work expired, and I had been expirimenting with creating dashboards for my personal data in it. Since my company will not be renewing it, I need to use something else. What tools do you like? I'm a programmer, so things like D3 and matplotlib are great too.

A lot of people get angry when you bet against success.
I’m married to an Indian woman and while I don’t have a strong gender preference, she wants a boy a lot more than a girl.
Re:New Empty Units on Sunday January 31, 2021 @11:08AM (#25979779)
I’m a YIMBY activist in my spare time. One criticism of my ideas I’ve seen is that building more housing in my city will attract more professionals to my city. Those people live in the new housing, not existing low income residents. I think this is because the shortage is so bad, and that these professionals would eventually displace residents no matter what.
Re:Robinhood now has a 1-Star rating on the Google Play Store on Thursday January 28, 2021 @04:17PM (#25949354)
For me at least, it's the anti-spam features, and automatic sorting of mail.
Re:Automating my job with GPT-3 on Wednesday January 27, 2021 @03:11PM (#25933281)
It reminds me of why tools like Tableau are so useful. You dont' have to teach people SQL or whatever, they can build their own visualizations and Tableau will do the SQL for you.

AFAIK the list never moves and you basically have to know someone at openAI.
