Wow, that is touching. I remember seeing the name "Jim Fox" when using Wordstar back when I was in school in India in 1997.

As a kid I thought it was a pseudonym. I did at some point wonder, what he went on to build. Your description of what he was going through, makes me hope that his memory will be well honored.

Re:Fuzzy logic rice cookers (2016) on Tuesday December 22, 2020 @03:24AM (#25504178)
I've been having Indian Basmati rice cooked in a Zojirushi Micom rice cooker and it's been great. I feel like I have to add a little more water than the official measure to get it to be a little more softer. I've also added tempering i.e. Tadka - oil/ghee with cumin into the cooker after adding rice and water and the rice comes out fragrant and fluffy would recommend it.

Interesting visualization.

There was also another page on the web which showed the various distortions on the maps themselves. While I can't find that, there is also this slightly deeper dive into projections - https://kartoweb.itc.nl/geometrics/Map%20projections/body.ht... And for a more humorous take, this XKCD gem - https://xkcd.com/977/

Re:Firefox 78 on Tuesday June 30, 2020 @03:36PM (#23693910)
There is also the auto-tab discard Extension. Which reportedly uses Native API better. I've seen that compared to other tab suspenders it does keep tabs sticky between sessions. However, I'm not a fan of it's auto-foreground on clicking a tab behavior. I think, The Great Suspender Extension on Chrome handles this better.

This is awesome. Do you know, if there's something similar for Firefox?
Thanks this is really handy for me. In the past, I had to export tabs via the "Cluster - Window Manager" Extension and then finagle the CSV into an HTML file before I stuck in my Google Drive.

Also, do you know if there is a version of this for Firefox?

On Chrome I have 4 windows with - 46, 20, 13 & 21 tabs open. I use the "Cluster - Window & Tab Manager" extension. I use Chrome for personal tasks on my work computer.

On Firefox - I have 7 windows with ~200 tabs open. I wish cluster was available on Firefox

Re:Show HN: Write a private diary using good old email on Tuesday January 14, 2020 @05:12PM (#22049774)
I use an App called Daylio [https://daylio.webflow.io/] as a personal diary and mood tracker.

It has a single notification per day which is directly actionable (Asks for your mood for the day).

Data is stored locally on the phone and can be backed up to your iCloud/Google Drive.

I have found this app to be more habit forming in terms of creating a micro-diary, rather than sitting down and jotting thoughts.

Agree I use org-mode to capture notes/TODOs.

For Links/Bookmarks I use Google bookmarks - https://www.google.com/bookmarks/ which surprisingly has not been killed and looks like might be left alone by Google. Other bookmarking services delicious.com & posterous etc all died in due time.

By using browser extensions and a 3rd party Mobile App. I am able sync/store all the links. Though I would love to be able to sync bookmarks to my org-mode notes. Looking at org-capture now to see if that could possibly work (https://github.com/alphapapa/org-protocol-capture-html)

Chrome Extension - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amlegate.g...

Firefox extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/fess-google-book...

You can try Commander One - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/commander-one-file-manager/id1...

I've used it as a replacement for Total Commander on the Mac. Another posted posted Marta, which I just downloaded and it seems to have almost the same features as Total Commander but in a free/open source offering.

Llama on Android also has a simpler UI and is Free opposed to Tasker.

I believe between Llama & IFTTT you should be able to do pretty much everything that Tasker can do.

I have been using the free version of Manic Time (http://www.manictime.com/) and it works quite well, as it's quite unobtrusive and doesn't need any input from me.

Lifehacker.com has a list of other alternatives too - http://lifehacker.com/5853163/the-best-time-tracking-app-for...

Re:Google Chromecast on Thursday July 25, 2013 @02:16AM (#6101168)
Chromecast chrome extension works on PS3 YouTube App.

I just tried today and noticed, with the Chromecast extension for Chrome (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-cast/boadge...) installed.

I am now able to push YouTube videos from my laptop to my PS3 (YouTube App). This makes searching videos just so much more easier.
