It seems that I cannot paste screenshots into the Mac app, whereas this does work in Gemini running in the browser (Chrome).

How is this different from the authors of (business book) seeking royalties from (bigtech CEO) because he/she ingested knowledge (training) from this book? Humankind needs to build on top of each other’s knowledge to keep evolving.
How does this compare to the estimates amount of birds that are killed by house cats every year?

I had an argument with a vegetarian cat owner about this the other week….

Ask HN: Which HN post (or comment) changed your life (or career)

I'm 45 years old and I've consumed many time- (and self-) management books that suggest to avoid news and social media. In general, this is good advice. The one exception I make is my twice-daily scan of the HN homepage, as, over the years, there have been many insightful posts, comments and links which have helped me tremendously [1]. This includes "Show HN" for tools and platforms that helped...

Could someone here do the math: how much CO2 is emitted by air travel to Qatar for football teams + entourage + fans vs. European countries hosting the world cup games (e.g. Italy, Benelux, Spain)?
Interesting. I just posted this very same question, but in a different context: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27034597

Ask HN: Fuel cells or battery electric for vehicles?

Context: I don't own shares in VW or Tesla.Today, I read an advert for the new Toyota Mirai. I was impressed with the 650 km range and 5 min refueling time. Turns out, this car is powered by hydrogen fuel cells.Could someone on HN shed some light on the benefits of the battery electric strategy that VW [1] and Tesla are betting on?5 minutes charging for a 650 km range seems like a very...

My point for trying start a HN discussion on this topic is exactly this: I think that "perception" will be more narrow than it is now, as all cars look more and more alike, and the quantifiable differences such as:

- range - safety features - audio system - etc - acceleration

Will be more difficult for high-end brands (Range Roger, Porsche) to use as discerning factors if the "heart" of the vehicle is largely identical between a Kia and a Porsche.

Will luxury car makers go to the way of Vertu vs. iPhone, or Omega vs. Apple Watch?

Ask HN: What will be the future differentiator in electric vehicles?

If you buy a mobile phone today, the choice is between Android and iOS, or, more specifically, between Samsung and Android.[LG's announcement to stop making smartphones is a testament to how the technology and (economy of scale) of Apple and Samsung have evolved to a duopoly of smartphone brands. For most consumers, two choices are enough. Quick: name the third in line: Coca Cola, Pepsi and...

It's all the more impressive when you look at some of the great master painters of the 17th century, how alive their models look.
I love Webflow and have used it >20 hours per week since 2014. It's been a game-changer to let me quickly and visually work out ideas, and has allowed us to iterate more quickly than having to mess around with css and Bootstrap templates (2014...).

That said, I sorely miss proper i18n support.

Currently, we use Transifex to i18n our marketing website, but this means that our SEO is hurt, as Google does not index strings in JS.

Ask HN: Smart housing solutions for refugee camps?

Winter is upon Greece and the Balkans, with many thousands of refugees, including children, exposed to freezing temperatures and lack of sanitation. What are some cost-effective housing options for these people? It seems to me that we should be able to do much better than simply set up tents.I believe IKEA had a "tiny house" concept, also with the purpose to serve as refugee / temporary housing.

Check out "No Rules Rules" by Reed Hastings and Erin Meyer. If you can't leave (constructive) feedback/criticism to your CEO, you're working at a sick company.

For "offline" speakers, just buy some (used) Bang & Olufsen speakers (with built-in amplifiers) and a Bluetooth receiver to connect your mobile device. Done.
A safe bike route from SW to NE, e.g. Fulham to Shoreditch, would be lovely.
I'm still missing London in this discussion.

Re:Ask HN: Will this be the end of Airbnb? on Saturday March 28, 2020 @08:54AM (#22710846)
Thanks for your insights. I think the tax and tourist income from AirBnB is less than what this form of tourism is costing the city, if measuring correctly. There were several studies published about this recently.

Ask HN: Will this be the end of Airbnb?

Context: living near Amsterdam, following the situation in Amsterdam (pre-Corona) closely, founder of Kamernet.nl - the largest marketplace for student rentals in the Netherlands.---Once the various quarantine measures have been lifted, and international tourism and travel rebound, I am hypothesising that cities will want to know (and control) where (foreign) tourists stay in a city, and that...

Re:German court bans Uber's ride-hailing services in Germany on Friday December 20, 2019 @04:29AM (#21842782)
IANAL, but it is likely that Uber has a good shot to appeal this at the EU level:

This ruling is rather incongruent with the recent Airbnb ruling (1) where Airbnb was ruled to be nothing more than an "information society service". (Rant: you could apply this label to anything from a public library to a sadistic secret service.)

Comparable to Uber, Airbnb makes money per transaction, yet claims it is no more than an information medium.

I used to operate several large classifieds sites in the Netherlands, and am rather certain that as soon as the platform starts collecting per-transaction fees, it becomes part of the transaction, as it is in fact a broker between two parties.

In my (consumer) view: Uber adds value and convenience to a city and threatens an inefficient and monopolistic status quo (at least here in the Netherlands), whereas Airbnb turns housing into business cases, for better of for worse (and in Amsterdam: for worse).

"Transportation makes up the largest share of emissions."1)

Transportation is still only 28%, slightly more than a quarter. Electricity & "industry" account for 50%.

Further, I remember a discussion with the president of Mercedes who was pushed for cleaner cars. He mentioned that one ocean-going freight vessel pollutes more than 450k cars combined (here is an article in that same trend (2).

I love the notion of quiet, electric cars, but the "industry" that pollutes these cars, and the "electricity" that is needed to charge these cars still accounts for 50% of the pollution. So, until ocean freighters are cleaned up, the net effect on pollution will likely be zero.

Netherlands will require central registration of Airbnb rentals

Interesting: https://tpo.nl/2018/09/25/kajsa-ollongren-d66-verklaart-oorlog-aan-illegale-verhuurders-airbnb/This is in line with a blockchain-based proposal that I had sent to the city of Amsterdam in mid 2017, where every residential unit has its own ledger to track how many times it has been let out.It will be interesting to see if this actually rolls out, and what the impact on Airbnb usage...
