Agreed. Dev's see the specs, and QA sees the holes. I get to participate from the initial planning into release. As a QA person I feel very lucky.

In regards to the article, i would wager the better scores will be found by QA than developers :-P

I read about this 10 years ago, from a book published in 1998 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Theory_of_the_Leisure_Class

I can't wait for the patent paperwork to come out. I see it just showing up in open-source security distros.

I demand a review of all his equipment to see if he was using Govt equipment and/or time to work on these ideas. If so, no patent awarded. VS commercial sector where patents go to court and end up in the hands of the parent company that provided the equipment.

I'm a contracter at an internet company in Palo Alto. If i pulled this, there is a lot of paperwork that says.. profits go to parent company..... 100% of my time is to be on said project. I just assume Director of NSA would have the same line.

I donated last week. The big problem is, those with largest money, have more unfair access to donating. Comcast just got to #2 in lobbying money. 3m per fiscal quarter buys monopoly. Seems easier for me to contribute against it. #americaninternetspeeds

You can develop apps on the iphone?

Well, look at craigslist, freelancer websites and hustle hustle husetle.

You can sell your ability to those with an idea who are posting.

However, you will only be studying/schooling/working/looking for work. No GF/BF, not much social time.

Be a freelancer, and the future is in your hands.

sigh. good riddance apple, and your awesome new geofencing patent.

Make the world better or GTFO.

I would argue they figured out what they wanted outside of the full influence of social consensus.

Live in a car = Fund Startup + Ring to from his supporting partner

Most ppl in the valley with a gf(bf) choose:

Apt + work at someone else's startup + untested supportive gf(bf)

Then there are the pompous ones:

Apt + Work at a fake startup (profitable, lots of employees) + have normal significant other, who says they support but probably wont be there if conditions get hard enough.

The real key is that he had unconditional support to do what he believed in and thought was right.

Do what you believe in, and everything else will work itself out as long as you are persistent.

p.s. I couch surf because i believe in what i'm doing, so i may be biased.

This kind of thing used to happen with map makers, for 1000 years. Their solution was to make random small inaccuracies so they could detect when their maps were being stolen. Additionally, Google has been doing this to small start ups in 3rd world countries for years.

This was an over produced decision, that should have been left to dealing with ignoring the cease and desist letter, instead of setting a president for banning VPNs and proxies, potentially.

Re:In California, a Champion for Police Cameras on Thursday August 22, 2013 @02:24PM (#6258980)
I agree. Plato said, "To be just is to do no harm." I would argue up until now, we had best effort at full information at a transaction level between the police/the incident/the public. The flaw was the only accredable information was asymmetric from the point of view of the police officer. Some times this situation led to fibbing to close a case or cover up a mistake.

Now there can be the solution to have symmetric, or full, information for the same situation. The only 'harm' now would be to those who forget the truth, embellish it, or are just bad at their job and lie.

Re:Is this the Yelp killer everyone has been waiting for? on Thursday August 15, 2013 @03:01PM (#6219884)
I'm not sure, once they go into monitization they might end up just like yelp.. not showing the good stuff because the businesses did not pay the ever increasing fees.
“Small businesses don’t want to pay for an ad from Yelp or deals on Foursquare or Groupon,” says Seirafi-Pour. “They have deals already. What they want is a better way to distribute them."
I do not see this statement as a 'we will not extort the businesses once our system is rolling'

Full disclosure: I dislike yelp, and feel it's an extortion service. Once the delivery end is kicking, i foresee a class action lawsuit for slander.

Re:Troubled Teens Make More Successful Entrepreneurs on Thursday August 15, 2013 @02:52PM (#6219836)
'Rebelling' in psychology happens so an individual can become an independant person. They rebel (males do at a younger age than females) to become something a bit different than the parents. We all do. The persons this article refers to just keep that mentality when it comes to other things.

"This works, but I see another way to look at it, witch removes something I don't like about the idea" Call it rebelling, call it out of the box thinking. It's what happens with us all, so we are not clones of our parents.

Re:Troubled Teens Make More Successful Entrepreneurs on Wednesday August 14, 2013 @11:10PM (#6215951)
I don 't believe it's 'lack of moral compass' for this equation. It's such a tricky pot. What would this missing moral compass entail? drugs, privacy, sexual morals?

I would argue that a stronger internal sense of morality helps one find these cracks in the system to become entrepreneur.

A lack of moral compass would mean one would do whatever it takes without bounds to achieve the desired outcome. NSA, Crack Dealers,

A strong internal moral compass would let someone think it's not a bad thing to grow pot and sell it(George Washington), protect their wealth during hyperinflation with bit-coin (Argentina, Greece), Bring cheep education to the masses (OCW, Schwartz).

I think the idea you are looking for is: socially suggested morals. But the 'troubled' kids are smart enough to question what they see, open enough to imagine a better way, stubborn enough to not listen to nay-sayers without good arguments.
