Would work fine for jobs or deadlines, as long as the deadline isn't always in a day or two.

Striving to focus on important problems instead of just urgent problems would work fine with this method.

I could also be answering a phone call. I think browsing your phone is mostly considered rude by people, but answering a call would be more grey area. Depending on the nature of the meet up and the perceived urgency of the call (which would be hard to estimate for the rest of the people present).

I read parent's comments more as a counter argument to the suggestion more people would be vegetarian if they had to kill their own animals for food, not a moral justification based on "people used to do it".
Re:Insatiable: A life without eating on Friday April 19, 2024 @04:55AM (#40084627)
That's a great way of looking at it, thanks, I'm stealing it :D
Here in the Netherlands more and more companies (particularly small and young companies) will actually just measure output (vs just say they do as long as you warm your chair 40 hours a week). So they don't think me working less is better, but they also don't care as long as my work is done.
Re:So You Want to Compete with Steam (2018) on Thursday September 22, 2022 @09:07AM (#32938287)
i have a similar situation, used to game a lot of friends, lots of us have kids now, would like to game 3-4 times a year. Dont want to bother getting a full on game setup, and I have a macbook for daily use, so not very gaming friendly. Decent streaming setup would be perfect.
Re:Is the internet killing the nude beach? on Thursday September 01, 2022 @10:44AM (#32677015)
probably because the number of showers is limited and they're making other people wait?
Re:Zelensky video deepfake on Wednesday March 16, 2022 @12:01PM (#30700489)
could be that you don't realise the convincing ones are deepfakes, and you only spot the bad ones?
Re:Get better sleep – Anecdata and sleep tech on Tuesday February 22, 2022 @05:05AM (#30426019)
Just a heads up there's been some controversy around some of the claims he makes in the book: https://guzey.com/books/why-we-sleep/

Haha, kind of, but tighter fitting
Re:Shein beat Amazon and reinvented fast fashion on Thursday December 23, 2021 @09:00AM (#29661850)
yeah they're super nice, the only downside is they look super weird if you end up taking off your sweater :D

I have 3 skot polos too, their under shirts are great as well. Build quality is def something we try to look at, the kuyichi pants i have for instance feel way more robustly built than g-star pants for instance.

We're also looking at different ways to ship, especially the last mile, trying to use electric cargo bikes instead of vans, and bundling packages across other shops as well via izipack for instance.

edit: one thing about the quality we're running into is it's hard to get across online how different the hoodies we have (from Athrty for example) look from the hoodies you'd buy at H&M for instance. As soon as you have them in your hands you can tell the difference, but on pictures that's way less apparent.

We use Good On You for the bigger brands, they do audits based on a couple criteria. There are a bunch of different certificates some of which are a bit of a farce, seeing through the green washing can be pretty hard.

If you'd like to have a longer conversation about this, feel free to contact me at arjan [at] fairbee.com

That's awesome! I'm working for https://fairbee.com , a Dutch startup that's trying to get more attention to these kinds of brands, there's a bunch of (Dutch and international) companies trying to do better :)

Thanks for the NPO tip: definitely going to watch it :)

I was considering a fitbit because of this, i like my mechanical watches too much. Think that might work on my other wrist, while still wearing my regular watches.
Re:MS Flight Simulator 2020 vs. Real life on Monday May 11, 2020 @06:41AM (#23140707)
Did the same recently, installed Windows 10 on an external USB-C disk.

Documented it here, if it helps anyway: https://gist.github.com/ArjanAssink/09e46937a8e355044c87ce59...

Re:VPN – Very Precarious Narrative on Monday April 08, 2019 @07:57AM (#19604332)
What would you consider the best/easiest way to setup your own?
I've also had the situation where the trailer would be for a tv show for older kids and it scared the crap out of my daughter (likely we don't let her watch on her own so we could shut it off). We are trying to limit her exposure screen in general, but commercials in particular, which is why we thought netflix was a good option...
that makes sense, just be weird if you dont finish your masters to have you bachelor, then a few years of nothing, and then your first job. I'd put the master course there too, but perhaps include a note that you didn't graduate?
would also be weird to omit the years entirely tho, right?

So you do end up reading those, just quicker than you would on your phone

Awesome, been looking for something like this for a while! Guess I'm going to need some hue lights :)

Re:Discovering private APIs with Charles.app on Tuesday July 22, 2014 @07:25AM (#8068341)
Never heard of either, but just used both and the free version of Burp seems complete enough and is free. Charles is restricted when free ($50 license) but looks better.

edit: additionally, Burp uses a custom certificate instead of a default one for all Charles users

Same thing is starting to happen with most ISP's in the Netherlands :)
Re:Why Chinese Is So Damn Hard (1992) on Tuesday April 22, 2014 @08:49AM (#7627288)
I've been using pimsleur as well, was able to find a pdf transcript to use alongside, which i found helpful. Also, anki (SRS flashcard system) works really well. I found a language coach at italki.com that sends me lists of words in a word doc and spoken into mp3, which i convert into flashcard using this method: http://www.zhtoolkit.com/posts/2011/05/creating-audio-flashc... (a lot of work the first time, about 5 minutes for 30 words the times after that).
I recently got a My Basis watch for this, works pretty well, and soon there should be more advanced sleep tracking as well. Really interesting to have an continuous heart-rate tracker, you can tell how much impact having a cold can have on your entire body for instance...
