Re:DiffusionGemma: 4x Faster Text Generation on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @05:44PM (#48483155)
Do diffusion models support tool calls? If so is the tool call support on par with autoregressive models or worse? (edited spelling)
And smaller bespoke models running locally are better for regulated workflows (healthcare, banking etc) as well
That's what I thought too. It's written in a curmudgeonly style for curmudgeonly readers similar to the author's other posts on substack. Don't think the author made this for very broad reading or expected this to get on HN lol
This is a great effort and thanks for this. Any reasons why the NBC article was linked rather than the tool itself? I found the tool link inside the article but was just curious why the link to the article and whether it would violate any HN terms to paste a link to the tool in the comments
Pocket Pal is what I've seen used before. Although recently heard about "Off Grid" but not read any reviews about it or tried it personally so caveat emptor. Will see if the community has other suggestions
I must add that I also tried out the standard "should I walk or drive to the carwash 100 meters away for washing the car" and it made usual error or suggesting a walk given the distance and health reasons etc. But then this does not claim to be a reasoning model and I did not expect, in the remotest case, for this to be answered correctly. Ever previous generation larger reasoning models struggle with this
Thanks for sharing the link to your instance. Was blazing fast in responding. Tried throwing a few things at it with the following results: 1. Generating an R script to take a city and country name and finding it's lat/long and mapping it using ggmaps. Generated a pretty decent script (could be more optimal but impressive for the model size) with warnings about using geojson if possible 2. Generate a latex script to display the gaussian integral equation - generated a (I think) non-standard version using probability distribution functions instead of the general version but still give it points for that. Gave explanations of the formula, parameters as well as instructions on how to compile the script using BASH etc 3. Generate a latex script to display the euler identity equation - this one it nailed.

Strongly agree that the knowledge density is impressive for the being a 1-bit model with such a small size and blazing fast response

I ran into this too. I'm on a work computer so did not want to accept this without knowing
Re:Textadept on Wednesday March 04, 2026 @08:15AM (#47246967)
This is a great project! Is there a place to look up the list of inbuilt lexers to understand the editor language support? Will forward to my (more hands-on devs) team members.
Re:Rats Play Doom on Saturday December 13, 2025 @02:03PM (#46256985)
Grandpa rats shaking their paws in anger going "It's all of 'em darned video games spoiling this generation of rats! Back in my days..."
If you add in the 1000$ that treasury plans to invest starting next year, that is $1250 compounded at 5% annually after 18 years to $3008.27. It's probably still not a "head start" given that inflation is assumed to nominally rise at 2.5 to 3.5% annually and will take a bite out of what the real value is worth in 18 years. Good intentions but misplaced as others have stated. Investing in other ways to provide upward economic mobility will provide much better ROI for the society than allowing most of the wealth to accrue to a handful of people
Re:Orbiting the Hénon Attractor on Tuesday September 30, 2025 @11:26AM (#45426754)
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing! Sometime back I had run into a related experiment where the author setup a simple 1 layer NN with a shift-register feedback and explored the state space of neuron activations over large iterations. The observation was beautiful in that the state space maps traced out attractors. See here if you are curious - https://towardsdatascience.com/attractors-in-neural-network-...

Re:Things you can do with a Software Defined Radio (2024) on Tuesday September 16, 2025 @11:00AM (#45263252)
Astonishing! Thank you very much for sharing.. This sentence really stuck out for me - "I was proud! I was tired! I was amazed that all those things I received are all around us, everywhere, all at once – if you know where to look. :O"
This was the nearest reference I could find. Links to an unofficial pytorch implementation on Github are also linked in the threads somewhere - https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1i0q8nw/titans_...
Seems to be windows only. Also worth noting that the all the currently supported models are 8B or less based on the readme on github
Sample size of 1 so caveat emptor! In my household YT shorts on TV is used precisely for that reason by my kid who does not have a dedicated device. I personally like to watch travel videos or train videos which display a lot better on a larger screen TV since they are essentially documentaries with lots of visuals that should be "experienced"
Re:Rails for Everything on Wednesday January 01, 2025 @08:04PM (#42570691)
Not hands on with Django (or other Python based frameworks) so pardon the basic question. How do the speed of the generated application compare with the speed of a generated rails application? I know the latter has made some strides recently..
ARPA-H, FWIW, is setup within the NIH. But it is structured to focus on more of "breakthrough" type processes, procedures, devices etc. Also the ARPA-H proposals are not driven solely by peer-review scoring unlike most NIH funding mechanisms. Typically ARPA-H tends to me across specific disease areas and more general in nature
I remember reading on a related reddit thread (more about container home costs) that structural costs account for only a small portion of the cost of home-building and that ground and electrical work, plumbing, finishes etc add a big portion
Re:Make your own stargazing binoculars on Sunday May 05, 2024 @12:59PM (#40266320)
Field of View is larger so makes it easier to "sweep". Also feels much more natural for the eyes to process than a telescope view
Look for Biomistral 7B, PMC-LLAMA 7B and even Meditron. I believe you should find all those papers on arxiv
Re:Inside the Massive Alleged AT&T Data Breach on Tuesday March 19, 2024 @09:56AM (#39755781)
Then likely your account info is exposed. I know a couple of former AT&T U-verse subscribers (not current) who's account info including SSN have been exposed
Re:Causal inference as a blind spot of data scientists on Monday October 16, 2023 @11:43AM (#37901449)
Most therapeutic trials are nowadays "Intent to treat". So subject would receive either standardized tx or experimental tx in th e randomization. Many of them also have crossovers such that when measurable (as defined by the protocol) benefit is seen, standard tx based subjects can be moved over to the experimental arm
Normally it would be, but unfortunately in a country where small portion of the population literally stockpile powerful guns permitted by law, I would, as a responding LEO, want to be prepared for the worst..
Well said! I'm a manager that strongly prefers to work from the office but fought hard for my team to WFH if they preferred to do so. So now about 20% of my team comes into the office (by choice) while the others WFH. Was lucky to have a boss that supported this and allowed me to craft our role definitions to support this with the global HR but was filling to fight as long as I could for this..
Very well done. Did a couple of "How to" questions to generate R scripts for basic purposes (e.g. scraping a webpage) and responses were not only descriptive but also covered other nuances like captcha, javascript execution blocking, parallelizing slow responding sites etc. Have not tried with more nuanced advanced questions but looks very promising so far!
Re:'Soleus pushup' fuels metabolism for hours while sitting on Thursday September 22, 2022 @08:09PM (#32946287)
In a specific study quantifying energy expenditure during rock/pop drumming, it was found to burn enough energy to qualify as a cardio activity (caveat, small sample size) - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23559410/

So there could definitely be come advantage gained by regular rock/pop drummers in comparison with sedentary folks for sure. This assumes of course, that other factors are kept the same (diet, pre-existing health conditions, stress exposure etc) which are incredibly hard to compare in real life settings.
