Re:Anybody ever interviewed at SpaceX before? on Monday June 26, 2023 @02:51PM (#36484071)
You can get higher salary with writing REST apis in Ruby. And fully remote
If these are the rules I'm pretty sure the site already lost the battle against reddit
I use the "Home" and the "Popular" tabs every day to discover things on reddit. I can't be alone with this
Re:Ultimate Electronics on Tuesday May 16, 2023 @01:12PM (#35964802)
Do you have any suggestion for a good book on the math topics you mentioned, to get myself above the bar?
Re:The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release on Friday May 12, 2023 @10:24AM (#35916807)
I've seen some longer load times on PS5, but mostly with PS4 games. Not sure why.
Re:Ask HN: What are we doing with all these strings? on Wednesday May 10, 2023 @10:16PM (#35896497)
What are you talking about?
I have no idea what is vector database, I’ll look into it.

I like 1, already have some experience with it, but security is such a big field, I don’t know which direction would be the best.

Do you have any suggestion for 5? I know I am bad with people skills, but I’m kind of an introvert. How can I improve in this?

Hi,

No I don’t want to be famous :D

I want high paying salary and/or to stand out during an interview. If there are 30 candidates for a position, right now there is nothing I would stand out with.

Last but not least, I want to work on interesting stuff. I’ve had enough of writing REST APIs.

I’m also thinking about starting my own business, and I feel like if I have some specialized knowledge I have better chance to succeed or to find a business opportunity.

All code I wrote during my 12 YoE is a property of a company. And obviously I don’t even have access to it.

With this type of interview you rule out a LOT of people, and only keep in the pool who either works on open source, or do great projects in their free time.

If that’s the intention, do it. But otherwise I don’t think it’s a good idea.

I think a _ WELL PAID_ take home project is much better way to interview people.

(Saying all this from the interviewee perspective)

Ask HN: What is a niche in tech that you think has a big future?

I think of myself as a relatively good software engineer (based on feedback), but I never specialized in anything. So I am here with 12 YoE but I don’t stand out with anything. I know the boring Java/Javascript/Python/AWS/etc. stack, and use these to write boring REST apis or data processing pipelines.Edit: by boring I mean: there are too many people with the same knowledge/experience.What is...

Everything has to be validated on the server side simply for security reasons. Even if you do all validation on the client side, which prevents the users submitting a form with invalid data, an attacker can work around that. e.g. submitting the form with valid data, but intercepting the request and modifying the values there. Or simply just using curl with malicious/invalid data.

You still need the client side validation for UX. The regular users needs to know if they messed up someting in the form. Also it's a much better UX if it's done on the client side, without the need to send an async request for validations.

Re:Ask HN: Is Twitter Down? on Thursday May 04, 2023 @12:44PM (#35818320)
I've just posted about protonmail. Seen another post about github. Must be some cloud service outage or similar?
I had to click through way too many links to finally find some code examples. The first page that contains at least some examples is the "Controllers" page in the wiki.

I think you should improve the README and include a showcase of how your framework works.

> Finding a need and filling it was very lucrative

Any tips on how to find a project idea? What worked for you?

This seems very similar to Notion. I am currently a Notion user, how does this compare to Notion?

What would make me switch from Notion to Outline?

Re:Django 4.2 Released on Monday April 03, 2023 @03:44PM (#35430145)
Does SPA concept work well with search engines? I moved away from web development, but SPAs used to be very bad if you wanted to appear in Google search.

Btw I was looking into Django recently, they are still using the “older” paradigm you are referring to.

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2023) on Monday April 03, 2023 @01:41PM (#35428074)
+1 on this.

Seems like a good product, if they are open to remote and would hire from Canada, I would be very happy to apply

  Willing to relocate: No

Hello! I'm a Software Engineer with 11-12 years of experience (3 of that is full remote). Currently working at Amazon. I have experience in large scale distributed systems, designing, implementing, and maintaining them. I have oncall experience. I also worked at small startup sized companies before.
Re:Is it time to open source SublimeText? on Thursday March 30, 2023 @11:17AM (#35373996)
I dont understand this argument. Vscode is very fast after you opened it. Startup is slow but who cares? I haven’t restarted my vscode for a week now.
I feel very similarly at Amazon. I wish I could volunteer for being laid off. I could use 3 months (with severance) without any work to try curing my burnout.
If you already use Docker, why don't you go with ECS-Fargate, instead of EC2 or Lambda?
Re:Twitch CEO Emmett Shear is resigning on Thursday March 16, 2023 @12:57PM (#35184723)
To add to this: Some other hot women are using 3D* microphones and they do nothing but moan into the mic (like if they were having sex or similar), and making "licking noises" and other similar stuff.

* Edit: no idea what are these called, but sometimes they moan and lick the left side, sometimes the right so you can hear it in your corresponding ear.

Re:Show HN: Explore careers that you don't know even exist on Wednesday February 15, 2023 @10:40AM (#34805238)
Come here to comment this. I had similar experience.

If I want ideas about positions I don't know that exist, why is it asking what industries/jobs I'm exploring? This makes no sense.

Re:Why Picnic Picked Java on Tuesday December 20, 2022 @02:43PM (#34071371)
At my workplace I would pick Java 8/10 times. I would only pick something else when Java is really not an option (e.g. Scala/Python for Apache Spark, Typescript for CDK).

Maintaining a larga Java code base is very easy (I think much easier than e.g. Python). The tooling is awesome, there are countless libraries, last but not least Java is the easiest to hire for.

Re:Show HN: Create a Paid Link to Anything on Tuesday December 20, 2022 @10:44AM (#34067453)
So how can I trust that after paying for the link, I will get the content that was advertised? What happens if it just redirects me to google.com after that? How do I get my money back?

How do you ensure the paid links are safe to visit, and it won't redirect me to a malicious website?

Re:ElonJet Is Now Suspended on Wednesday December 14, 2022 @11:44AM (#33986080)
What if he (or his investors) just wanted all of Twitter's data? What happens to the company's data if it goes bankrupt?
Re:Mona Sans and Hubot Sans on Friday December 02, 2022 @04:07PM (#33836923)
Plex's capital "O" and it's 0 (zero) is pretty much indistinguishable.
