News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

That's a great idea. It just seems that every problem I run into has already been solved.
I'm talking about practical/technical problems of course.
Yes, it is. But I can't recognise my own problems anymore, because I've become so good at solving them myself.

Ask HN: Create a job board for graduates?

Common job boards offer searching by keyword, function title, industry, ... which I believe most graduates are not familiar with. Why not create a job board where graduates can search by their obtained degree instead? The returned results would only contain job offers that require no previous experience as well.

Ask HN: Would these laptops sell?

I've owned a laptop repair shop for 6 years now and my customers always keep asking me the same two questions:1) What kind of laptop do you recommend? I only need it for reading my e-mails, browsing some websites and saving my photos.2) Can you make my laptop faster?I am wondering if I could sell laptops that come with a clean copy of Windows? This way they don't contain any bloatware, which...

Why not use Neat for your grid and Foundation for typography?

What do you expect from a job board?

I see all these job boards with functionalities like uploading your resume, browsing by sector/region/..., countless blog posts about improving your work life, ... Is it really necessary for consumers to have those functionalities available? What do you except from a job board?

Re:Discuss my idea: social address book network on Monday January 02, 2012 @04:01PM (#3417321)
EveryMe is something different. They add a social feature to your contacts. My idea is about always having the most up to date personal contact information.

Discuss my idea: social address book network

Presented in a concise problem-solving manner, so I don't waste your valuable time.Subproblem 1:People still have to enter all details about their personal contacts (e.g. address, phone numbers, e-mail accounts, birthday, …) manually in their address book, phone, computer, ... This is quite a tedious task. There should be an easier way to do this.Subproblem 2:The details about your personal...

Re:Where can I discuss about my ideas? on Monday January 02, 2012 @07:48AM (#3415749)
They're just ideas floating around in my head. I want to make sure I'm not reinventing the weel.

Where can I discuss about my ideas?

I have a lot of ideas crossing my mind lately. I need people to comment on them. I can't figure out myself whether they are useful or not. I'm too focused, one might say. Friends and family aren't an option, because they're just not interested. I don't blame them. I want honest opinions from complete strangers. Where do you discuss about your idea(s)?

Re:Ask HN: Aggregator intended for a certain market niche? on Tuesday December 27, 2011 @11:53AM (#3396326)
I'm actually thinking about a celebrity/gossip niche. It would be fun to just read articles and watch pictures/videos of a certain celebrity, without visiting multiple websites. I just don't have a clue how an aggregator is build. Do I have to build a crawler or can I just use the RSS feeds of certain websites?
Love it!
Re:Ask HN: Should I quit college to pursue my dream? on Monday December 26, 2011 @03:16PM (#3393821)
I'm only studying to get a degree. Without a degree, it's hard to find a proper job in Belgium. CS has interested me since I was a teenager, that's why I choose it.
Re:Ask HN: Should I quit college to pursue my dream? on Monday December 26, 2011 @03:11PM (#3393808)
You're absolutely right. Sometimes I let myself be carried away by the fears of others.
Re:Ask HN: Should I quit college to pursue my dream? on Monday December 26, 2011 @03:02PM (#3393786)
Really appreciate your input, but your statement about my idea is rather brusque. You don't have a clue what my idea is about. It is possible to take a leave of absence at my university, which I'm considering. I might even go to night school getting a bachelor's degree while working on my startup during the day.
Re:Ask HN: Should I quit college to pursue my dream? on Monday December 26, 2011 @02:55PM (#3393771)
I can learn things quicker without going to college. College also teaches a lot of things I don't need right now. I'm a strong believer that one should only learn things when they're needed and useful. You're much more focused then, which results in a better learning experience.
Re:Ask HN: Should I quit college to pursue my dream? on Monday December 26, 2011 @02:52PM (#3393764)
There's nothing wrong with having doubts. I feel it's actually immature starting a company without considering all the options. You're just being delusional then.
Re:Ask HN: What do you expect from a Facebook 'killer'? on Monday December 26, 2011 @09:41AM (#3392989)
Less clutter, an easier way to choose with who I want to share, a dislike button, possibility to comment on page likes (they removed that feature), an algorithm that filters the stuff that's irrelevant to me (f.e. farmville spam, fanpage posts, ...), a cleaner frontpage, a better distinction between groups and lists, no flood of e-mails, better family relationship options, ... The list is endless.

Ask HN: Should I quit college to pursue my dream?

-- Current situation --* 23 years old* no degree* studying CS (first year in college)* knowledge of C/C++, Python & Objective-C* been repairing computers, cell phones (f.e. iPhone), ... since I was 18 (check my website)* resentment against the way college teaches-- My dream --* building my own startup (eBay competitor)-- Why can I succeed? --* autodidact* not afraid of working hard* sense...

Thanks a lot. However, you do have to know how to program, right? Who else is going to build your product?

Ask HN: Should I know any mathematics/algorithms before starting my own startup?

Should I master discrete math, calculus, algebra, ... before starting my own startup? Is it important to know all kinds of (sorting) algorithms (bubble sort, insertion sort, radix sort, ...) before creating a web product? I'm just wondering. Keep in mind that I'm not financially able to hire software engineers.

Lacking knowledge or experience.

Ask HN: Should me and my girlfriend apply for YC?

We've been together for 5 years now. She's an architectural engineer and I'm currently studying for a bachelor of computer science. I'm the one who comes up with the business ideas and she comments on them. She's actually my advisor. She doesn't know any programming, but is great at math. I know a few programming languages, but haven't really build anything (except for my website). The reason I...

Hi,

I'm an Belgian computer science student looking for a co-founder who has serious interest in creating a new manner to buy/sell used and new products (like eBay, but completely different). I'm not looking for someone to work on my startup, I'm looking for someone to work with me on a startup. If you're interested, don't hesitate to contact me or add me on fb.

Re:Ask HN: What interesting non-intuitive things do you know? on Saturday December 03, 2011 @01:29PM (#3308363)
The music from my father. I never thought I'd end up listening to the same music as him, which seemed kinda old-fashioned when I was just a teenager. Unfortunately he passed away six years ago. It makes me smile we can still share common thoughts and feelings through his music today.
