I'm not doubting you but could you provide sources for your claims? TIA
Re:The Surprisingly Long Life of the Vacuum Tube on Tuesday May 12, 2026 @01:09PM (#48111132)
As a guitarist with over 30 years of playing, and owner of many tube and non-tube amps, I disagree. Even experienced guitarist cannot reliably distinguish between transistor and tube circuits in a blind test. Having said that, if only the knowledge of playing a tube amp gives someone a better experience, even if its not empirically distinguishable, thats a perfectly valid reason to prefer it.
Whoa...I worked on this exact thing around 20 years ago. But in my time, we were using laser pulses to ablate noble metals. Printer would have made life so much easier.

Wait, helix has a file explorer now? The lack of one has been preventing me from using it more
Re:Ardour 9.0 Released on Friday February 13, 2026 @02:03AM (#46999774)
Thanks for the suggestion and sorry for late reply.

I have almost switched over to Bitwig now :D

But I still miss the ease of LoopyPro on iPad.

Re:Ardour 9.0 Released on Thursday February 05, 2026 @04:49PM (#46905862)
I'll take this as an opportunity to thank the Ardour developers for making a truly great product. Its really really good.

Off topic but is there a linux DAW which focuses on live loop recording? Something like what the LoopyPro app does on iOS ?

OP said in the submission that this is educational.

Not everything has to be useful.

Re:Linux gamers on Steam cross over the 3% mark on Monday November 03, 2025 @05:43AM (#45797719)
That is exactly Linux Mint ( https://linuxmint.com/ ) . I encourage you to give it a try. It is what I have settled on after 25 years of using linux, and trying near about every distro in existence.

"The best hifis are professional equipment"

This is gold. I wish so many people understood and used this. Pro equipment is more robust and more versatile. And if you know some people you can get amazing used stuff at bargain prices from your local musicians or sound engineers. Lot of times, people I know (and I too, though I'm not a pro sound engineer) will help you choose and setup just because you showed interest in the things we are interested in. Beers are assumed.

One drawback is that pro audio stuff may look ugly to non pro people. I made my wife listen to the cheapest studio monitors I could find on amazon, equalized with the same pink noise method in this video, and compare it to her bose and marshall speakers. She liked the sound better but my speakers are "yuck ugly" :(

Hey sorry for the late reply. Yes I use PEP 723 already, but there is also a requirements.txt so that vscode can be happy and do typechecks etc.

I really wish there was a way to tell vscode to understand inline metadata.

Could you plz link to your repo? would love to look at it.

> this is not coder this help typing instructions.

'Coding' technically is just that. If you mean engineering, yes sure, I agree. Nothing right now automates engineering. Maybe some day.

Re:OpenAI Leaks 120B Open Model on Hugging Face on Friday August 01, 2025 @03:36PM (#44761404)
It may be the way I use it, but qwen3-coder (30b with ollama) is actually helping me with real world tasks. Its a bit worse than big models for the way I use it, but absolutely useful. I do use ai tools with very specific instructions though, like file paths, line numbers if I can, and specific direction about what to do, my own tools, etc. so that may be why I don't see such a huge difference from big models.

I should try Kimi K2 too.

Re:Ollama has a native front end chatbot now on Wednesday July 30, 2025 @11:15PM (#44742010)
I have a 1yo too, and I could do it. I used the other tools to make one which I liked.
Re:Ollama has a native front end chatbot now on Wednesday July 30, 2025 @11:13PM (#44742004)
Yes I do that too. The important bit is the model. Rest is almost trivial. I had posted a Show HN here about the script I've been using which is open source now ( https://github.com/n-k/tinycoder ) ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44674856 ).

With a bit of help from ChatGPT etc., it was trivial to make, and I use it everyday now. I may add DDG and github search to it soon too.

Show HN: A tiny (480 LOC) AI coding assistant for your shell

https://github.com/n-k/tinycoder

Hi HN. This is a script I have been using for some time for coding tasks, which I have polished a bit and published. The motivation behind this script was to have an agent with persistent session which I can use from the shell like a regular command. It _can_ also be scripted, although I don't use it in such a way.The script uses a minimal prompt, which just tells it to use standard unix tools...

Can you explain more? Sounds interesting

Re:DeepMind releases Lyria 2 music generation model on Friday April 25, 2025 @02:41AM (#43790818)
Is there a model which can generate vocals for an existing song given lyrics and some direction? I can't sing my way out of a paper bag, but I can make everything else for a song, so it would be a good way to try a bunch of ideas and then involve an actual singer for any promising ideas.
Heh, this will be a fun series.

I noticed that you are not using Letsencrypt operator and CRDs :-|

Re:Rust in 2023: Growing Up on Friday January 20, 2023 @03:16PM (#34459191)
That would be a great thing to have, but I can't imagine how that can be maintained. Managing versions of gdal+gdal-sys+geo+ndarray+ndarray-linalg has been a giant PITA recently so I for one would welcome this feature.

> No matter how deep your knowledge is, you're only scratching the surface.

I understand this is just emphasis, but no, its not magic, its not innate ability, its just software man! If you have dug deep enough, and understood it, that's it. Key phrase is IMO 'understood', but that's universal.

That sounds very useful! Do you have a writeup or any tips to set that up?

Re:AirPods Max: An Audiophile Review on Tuesday February 02, 2021 @09:55AM (#26001611)
The only affordable consumer audio products I have liked are from Marshall. They make a good lineup of bluetooth speakers for home use. I picked up one of those, and it sounds very good for its price. It has very decent bass, and generally good response all across the range. And just for fun, I put a processed guitar in aux input, not bad at all.

Another one which I like a lot are the range of mini amps from Laney. They aren't targeted for normal home use, but they can be used with bluetooth and aux-in. For their price and size, they sound very good. As a guitar amp...ehhh its OK for the price, but its portable.

Its really telling that both are veteran music gear companies.

Keycloak is great software, and I am thankful to Redhat for keeping it open source and maintaining it. But I do not believe that a production deployment of keycloak with HA, backups, customization, integrations, upgrades etc. is easy at all. It takes time and planning to get it right. Depending on the constraints, it isn't obvious to me why it would win by default over SaaS alternatives, or simpler on-premises alternatives like OP's.
Re:Blogging vs. Blog Setups on Sunday November 29, 2020 @03:34AM (#25243818)
I made my own markdown based blog site. Its took ~1hour, but then I went a bit crazy for few posts and added a lot of complexity. The blog site itself is very simple. I describe it here: https://n-k.freeddns.org/blog/posts/2020-11-06-3.md

Thinking about it again, I should probably have just done something simple like gh-pages.

Re:Apple's M1 processor spotlights Intel's chip challenges on Thursday November 12, 2020 @10:24AM (#25070820)
It is possible to do that wirelessly with samsung dex already. I use it regularly, with an external mouse/keyboard for dex desktop on a TV, and I can use the phone normally. They supported linux on Dex for a while, but that is unsupported now. If Samsung brings a linux desktop with Miracast as an alternative to their own desktop, I might just switch full time to that.
Re:I Hate Coordinate Systems on Friday October 30, 2020 @02:41AM (#24939750)
Can I add another, personal gripe to this? US surveys use their own definition of a foot, which is different from everyone else's : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_(unit)#US_survey_foot
Can you share how you configured your bluetooth headset? I have a pair of sony's noise cancelling ones, but I could never get the mic to work on linux. Thanks in advance!

This is about the only gripe I've had with linux desktop in recent years. For everything else, its been at par or better than windows/osx for me. I do mostly programming, music synthesis/recording and photogrammetry/image processing on a Dell XPS-15, and its been great.
