I hand pollinate mine with a craft paintbrush from my mini painting set
I think Durian smells more like natural gas than vomit, but I know what you mean about the vomit smell. Especially when you have a huge harvest and the fragrance is overwhelming
The Atwood is i got was grafted, so it grew easier than any of the other trees I have. I basically bought each of them at the 1 - 3 gallon range, wrapped them in burlap and plastic the first 2 winters to keep the snow from killing them, and just made sure to water them well, but not overwater. I used transplant fertilizer the first year, but not since. I think the first time I got any to fruit was 3 - 4 years after planting them. I dont consider them labor intensive at all, personally
I have 3 trees. I highly recommend the KSU Atwood, which is bred for its particular flavor and high output. We live in Virginia and a cold front killed a bunch of the young fruit about a week after we pollinate the trees, and we still got around 50 decently-sized pawpaws from that tree

Agreed. I imagine it as the same conundrum discussed in this book, but a "connected" kid's peers now include the entirety of the internet

I browse facebook using m.facebook.com in chrome on my Samsung. No interest in installing the app. If I press and hold on a playing video, I get the option to download an mp4. No extra site or software needed
Having caved on this idea, I 100% agree
Device time limits and prerequisites, and periodically check-ins (hey, what are you doing/watching?)

Even with all this, it's obvious that the influence is very strong

Great. Still waiting for a hybrid version of the Santa Cruz, though
Re:U.S. math scores drop on major international test on Thursday December 12, 2024 @10:51AM (#42400168)
It's interesting to read the myriad of different potential causes shared in the comments.

The biggest problem with my kids' math studies that I've noticed since COVID has been having the kids solve problems exclusively using the computer, with no prompting to work things out on paper. They just stare at a screen and try to think of what their next step should be so they can type it into MathSpace.

I love math and do very well at it, generally, but trying to do it without writing it down and lining up the numbers and operators on the paper in a way that makes sense, crossing off items that have been reduced away, and regrouping the problem as my understanding of it evolves is maddening for me as an adult. I can only imagine what goes on inside my 13 year oldest head. I'll always grab a sheet of paper to show him how I would approach it, but he won't do it for himself. He's more likely to ask the DESMOS calculator site for a hint over and over again until it basically solves the problem for him. Who can expect actual understanding and retention when that's possible? He just wants the homework over with.

I think the push for technology in the classroom has been too aggressive. It's great that the tech is increasingly available. How to build and implement it for the optimal results still needs more time in the oven.

Can confirm. I really like the one for Dice Hospital. I learned from that one that Paul Grogan is the best at doing rulebooks. I also don't mind the one for Obsession, but maybe because I just love the game that much
Still hoping for Black & White

I planted pawpaw trees in my yard about 3 years ago and finally have fruit this year
Re:Ask HN: Anyone else hate sports with a passion? on Sunday September 15, 2024 @12:09PM (#41548304)
I wasn't a big fan as a kid because I never felt like I had talent at it, and my poor performance would make me feel like a failure, especially when I could see disappointment on the faces of my pickup game teammates.

In college I did sports medicine as an extracurricular activity and spent lots of time preparing and rehabbing athletes, talking with them, and also watching the sports right from the sideline, and I developed an understanding of the stakes and passion and decisions involved.

I've developed a board gaming obsession over the past few years, so I notice strategy in a lot of areas now, and I can firmly say that I can respect and enjoy the strategy in a game now. I also have become a huge fan of youth sports as a parent, seeing how desperately they need activity and time with their peers for their development, even more so than when I was their age.

The only thing I just don't really get about sports is the fervor. I don't have it in me to commit to a team or player and track entire careers, have arguments, refer to the home team's performance in the second person ("we", "us"). I will gladly watch a sports movie or documentary, though, and occasionally a game (preferably as close to the field as possible)

I've been slowly growing 3 trees over the past few years

When it comes to upgrading game bits, I usually just go with what the manufacturer is offering as an upgrade, with the exception of 3d printing inserts or deck boxes, or using coin capsules on tokens. I did build a table topper with a lazy Susan for Twilight Imperium a few years back, though.

Re:Ask HN: What are you reading Feb 2024 on Sunday February 04, 2024 @11:26AM (#39251595)
I'm in the middle of reading "Technostress: The Human Cost of the Computer Revolution", by psychologist Craig Brod.

I'm in my late 40s and the book reads to me as a nice time capsule of how computing has reshaped our society, and sets good context for considering the effects of AI, the pandemic and our more connected and increasingly-remote world overall, and looking to the future.

I see a lot of early criticisms of his research in book reviews, but I have a tough time dismissing the observations in the book, based on what I've seen

Song of Solomon is a favorite and I love seeing it mentioned here
I'm certain this is oversimplified and not really how nutrition works, but I always liked to think maybe eating more fat was fortifying the myelin sheaths around our neurons and preventing signal "arcs"
Gabor Mate's book "Scattered" about ADHD discusses this
I believe what the children need is each other. More time face to face with friends. Even if they're doing things on screens, just sharing time and activities in person with their peers helps to form and maintain friendships and helps to ground them in objective reality
Yes! I worry all the time about how much time my kids are spending at home and I try to encourage them to spend time with friends
I do so every couple of years. I would love to now, but my kids have smartphones, so I feel the need to be able to relate.

The one I had most recently was the Sonim XP5, which fit all my requirements (bluetooth connection for music and hands-free, mp3 player, no apps) despite running a stripped down version of Android. It was also very rugged. The only thing I didn't care for was the proprietary charger

Re:HN goes fit: Whats your strategy to lose weight? on Wednesday October 11, 2023 @09:38AM (#37844228)
I go to a gym with instructor-led workouts (for 7 years now), but the biggest changed happened this year when I decided to get serious about nutrition. I thought I might be eating too much, but I was eating too little in general, being inconsistent and using my calories wastefully. I started tracking my calories and macronutrients religiously and started paying a small weekly fee to a trainer to check in with me for accountability, and I honestly eat more and better now than ever. I'm down 35 lbs since the end of January when I started, and I actually expect to keep it off this time, and I'm stronger than ever
