Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:29AM (#50338181)
I have a company laptop that came with Ubuntu from the factory, Debian wasn’t an option.
from the article: He was allowed to revise his answers on tests after they were graded — and get a new grade.
It’s the old “ When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure”. When everything looks at certain scoring methods to (in the end) determine funding allocation, the incentive is to maximize score over education.
Yeah, maybe that’s the way it will end up. A small web of “if you know you know” sites and communities, strictly curated and enforced, with the corporate web scraping it to feed content generation farms for the social media masses

> The fuel would not have contributed to the crater.

In the explosive sense, I agree. Depending on how much fuel they had, it could’ve been a decent percentage of the aircraft’s weight, though.

Even if you could come up with a perfect vetting process and create a site with only 100% factual content, wouldn’t the scrapers and trainers just gobble it up and make their own sites, ad-filled and ranked higher in search results and AI responses?
Honestly I thought the article was going to be about that episode when I saw the headline
“One that won't make me nervous, wondering what to do. One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you.”
Re:Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:54AM (#50258417)
I was reviewing some coordinate conversion code one time and a developer’s method of creating unit tests was to run their code, generate a result, then make that output the correct result for the test. Except the result was wrong based on other utilities doing the same conversion, and also failed edge cases.
Re:AI is ruining haunted houses on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:37AM (#50257617)
For me, it’s because I have no idea what I’m actually choosing from. The description of the burger says it has cheese, lettuce, and tomato. The picture shows pickles and mayo. The patty doesn’t even look like meat. I’m not expecting a professional menu when I go to a burger place, but I’m expecting accuracy. If there was a burger place next door that just had pics of food off a mobile phone printed on the wall, I’d choose there instead.
Re:AI is ruining haunted houses on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:28AM (#50257535)
From what I recall talking to a photographer, the burger is all actual ingredients. They push everything to the front and angle the shot so it looks bigger than it is. That’s why you just see buns when you get yours, all the ingredients are in the center. But it’s possible to recreate the same pic with enough time and attention to detail. Lighting makes a huge difference as well.

Is the ticket $5 cheaper? Or are they just pocketing the difference?

It goes to show how actually powerful modern hardware is, and how much of it is squandered by modern software.
A quote I heard recently: “You may not live what you profess, but you will live what you believe”
> Operation Raven starts with one image: a helicopter running dark over a sleeping city

Is it the image that accompanies the article? Because it’s currently blasting a searchlight onto the ground, kinda kills the stealth.

That’s why I caveated it with fully using AI. If they’re using AI as a tool within their workflow, it doesn’t fall into the same bin as the vibecoded games that are being referenced in the article.

Unfortunately reached its billing limits before I could see it (to save others the click)
There’s two kinds of people making games (fully) with AI:

- I have a passion for making games but not the skill, and this lets me achieve my dream

- I can crank out games in an hour, and as long as I get 100 purchases over its lifetime I’m making money

> He said every search was related to his federal law enforcement work and denied using the system for personal reasons.

Assuming that’s true, why wouldn’t he have his own flock account to do his searches?

Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:11PM (#50123912)
Didn’t that also actually work? IIRC they wanted to develop something that could realistically do it. This seems to confirm: https://batmobilehistory.com/tumbler-batmobile.php
It could create entirely new kinds of fires!
Re:Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:15PM (#50094450)
Yeah, it was for some electronics gadget and one of the reviews was for some lettering on the trailer of a pickup truck
I don’t mean this to come across as snark, but with where things are projected to go, could you in the future? If you were able to prompt “Claude, analyze my business and come up with 5 pieces of custom, bespoke software that would improve my profitability” and then a pile of agents sets off and does that. Would you still be making something?
Re:Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:25AM (#50087424)
I recently was looking for some widget on amazon and one of the chinese “brands” came up. They had 300+ reviews and 4.5 stars so I thought it had to at least be decent. But then I clicked through to read some of the reviews, and was surprised to see that there were many 1 to 3 star reviews, but none of them were counted. They all had strikethrough on the text, and then an explanation from amazon saying “because this was fulfilled by amazon, we take responsibility for this failure”.
Re:50MB operating system can resurrect your old PC on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:53PM (#50039054)
4GB RAM should have been too small for that era. But there’s still 4GB laptops with windows sold brand new today: https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-omnibook-3-laptop-16t-b...
Re:Deno Is Joining Cloudflare on Friday October 09, 2026 @03:16PM (#50025376)
I just learned of Deno yesterday when setting up some software for the first time. I wonder how many applications depend on it behind the scenes?
“Rather than document an event or recording a particular moment, the AI video presents a depiction of the victim and his thoughts created from the imaginings of the victim's sister," the court of appeals wrote on Wednesday.

The issue is it’s not real testimony one way or the other, it’s a fabrication. And allowing it is opening the door for all kinds of things. I think it’s the right move.

Yeah, I wasn’t intending to make judgement in this instance one way or another, rather I was rephrasing the original comment for clarification.

It’s that they didn’t have concerns about the ethics of a company for the years working there until they were financially secure
