You're missing the forest for the trees here. AirBnB only makes problems because we're all forced to work in designated commercial zones, and they "subverted" zoning laws.
Now we're "subverting" zoning laws by allowing people to work from rural areas or wherever. People can then use market pressures to live wherever is cheapest and has the amenities they want! That will decrease demand for hot cities and should make it easier to live in them.
Of course, that is presuming that our current demand craze has anything to do with residency at all, and isn't being driven by corporations like Blackstone buying up properties as investments, and Russian/Chinese oligarchs buying properties as wealth shelters. Funny how the Canadian market has suddenly chilled a little since the government banned foreign buyers. Must be a coincidence.
I immediately thought about the schools in smaller towns around here that were built in the 90s, which were built to last, and are now sitting as barely used community or senior centers. Society's needs can change a lot in 30 years, let alone 1000.
This hits the nail on the head. I'm at the bottom of our management tier so I am still expected to do some programming. I feel schizophrenic at times because the mindset required for management and programming are very different. The demands are also very different.
I joke that if I only do programming in the 15 minutes between emails/team messages/calls/meetings/etc. The reality is that if I can't solve the problem in 15 minutes then I have to delegate it. Anything else is my ego getting in the way of getting the problem solved.
Yeah this is why laws, and even constitutions don't matter at this point. Only the anointed CIA affiliated "papers of record" are given protection. Despite the beautifully clear language in the US constitution.
Just so you know, if you think this is new, its not. Communist speech has been deemed illegal, and upheld by the supreme court, since the McCarthy era. This is not presented as a political view on Communism vs Capitalism, just as a fact that the constitution doesn't matter.
For more recent events, I challenge you to find where a "curfew" on peaceful protests, or "free speech zones" appear in the constitution. Again, not an endorsement of the protest, merely pointing out that laws don't matter.
Also remember that the journalist that exposed the Panama papers mysteriously died in a freak car explosion. Very sad.
I'll take off my tinfoil hat now...
If the machines can replace people then they will replace people regardless. Its a capex vs opex decision and capex is almost always better in the long run. That's why that argument is a bit of a red herring.
Self checkout came regardless of whether the state had a minimum wage increase or not. As soon as the technology was mature enough it was rolled out.
My employer does this, and is the only one in town who does. It isn't deducted from our 4 week of vacation either. Its the only reason I stick around despite subpar pay.
It turns out the HR books are right and pay isn't the primary consideration after a certain point. The problem is that most HR people take that and say, "We're already soooo generous, we already offer unlimited vacation (lol), so we don't have to pay people too!"
I used it to learn CSS way back in the day and it still seems to be a good balance between too little and too much for the beginner, so I still send my newbies there.
Not surprised it shows higher than the actual spec. I think the HN community is just getting to the greybeard stage (I'm still cutting out grays), and this is our version of JUST READ THE MAN FILE
Happy turkey day everyone!
I hope your turkey comes out better than mine did...
Eh, the business world isn't as simple as Econ 101. Personal and business relationships matter. Risk matters quite a bit too. Which is why strategic partnerships happen between large businesses.
All I'm hearing is that the client signed the contract, which means you won.
Whether your company makes money on the change order is a matter for your boss.
Yes, developers are a major threat vector in any non-IT company. Which is why large companies can't innovate.
Yeah we used to take the rail. Which is currently washed out. Which technically means BC can secede from confederation.
I wonder this too. Vancouver Island was hit by a drought this summer and the (not unusual) torrent caused "water to flow where it has never flowed before" according to the road engineers.
I've driven that trip many, many times. Its a wonderful drive if you like peace and quiet.
Although as my cousin put it, all he saw was "A tree, a rock, a mountain, a river, and a bear."
Nah, that won't happen. International affairs are handled by Ottawa, which is 4000 km away and completely unaffected by this crisis.
Oh no its better than that. All the downvotes count as engagement, so it will get recommended to other people who can only see that it has 100 likes and not 20000 dislikes.
Which means my videos can finally stop being brigaded by those damn round earthers! Spread the truth!
Yeah exactly. I hate ads and 15$ is nothing to me. I'm not a poor college student anymore.
You'd think a company that profitable could hire a few extra QA people. Especially considering their entire brand is "it just works"
Hell will freeze over before we get an international court.
The US literally has a law on the books to invade the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands if GWB is ever held trial for war crimes (wars of aggression have been a war crime since the end of WW2).
You are technically correct, the best kind of correct.
I absolutely hate maintenance, so I love people like you. That is why its great to have a small but diverse team.
Managers fail up. So they can point to their tight budget in their next interview.
Oh, they can also blame the single point of failure for being stupid and lazy. That tends to work a few times before their boss catches on.
This is why I look for sales training in my hires. Its clear that the Apple rep was asking probing questions trying to wrestle him into a decision funnel. I've sold laptops to a bunch of grandmas who've given me questions like that, and never to a "CPU designer".
...come to think of it, maybe one of the grandmas was a CPU designer all a long!!
I would imagine so. The CN railroad was specifically built to transport soldiers from eastern Canada to BC to defend against American machinations. (Not for expansion, nope, no way, we didn't want Alaska anyways!)
Implementing just-in-time access on legacy systems that pre-date just-in-time architectures is extremely expensive. Its cheaper to either give all info or no info. Which is what every legacy company does instead.
My company can shut off my access to the all the databases when they stop asking me to troubleshoot any and all data issues. Which will never happen.
One non-sequiter deserves another. Just call his mother a cunt and move on.
As a former union leader I'd just like to say FUCK THOSE GUYS. Holy shit that is fucking infuriating. I did OHSA inspections to prevent shit like that from hurting our members AND THE COMMUNITY. I hope their leadership is burning in hell.
I do that sometimes. I'm being 100% serious.
I get bureaucrats talk about building slow and expensive process controls to prevent someone from doing something stupid. I counter with the fact that we don't need the controls because my employees know I will simply fire the person if they do it.
Sharepoint will put my team out of business any day now /s
Its worth noting that the reason this happened is because management bought out the company from Unilever. They were able to switch to a long term vision, then transformed and succeeded.
Just goes to show that the boardroom can absolutely hobble a good management team.
