Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:48AM (#50261090)
Yes, but you are in a better position to leverage this technology than an employee, the potential value you can extract from AI is higher. Regarding competition, software was never the moat in most cases, so I don't think more software equals more competition, at least not linearly.
Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:54AM (#50258411)
AI is increasing productivity. Companies are positioned to leverage this, employees are not, as they'll still work the same hours, maybe now producing more.

The way to better leverage this is to build your own company, I know this is not as simple as saying it but the gap is widening and it doesn't look good for employees.

Re:Ask HN: What are your career plans in the age of AI? on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:50AM (#50257740)
Plan A -> this year I've started a company on the side, planning to leave my job before the second half of 2027.

Plan B -> keep trying to get jobs in software, trying to adapt to still bring some kind of value to the table.

Plan C -> run my parents kindergarten, but the birth date drop is making this option challenging.

Plan D -> real estate broker and fix and flipper.

Plan E -> Buddhist monk

Ask HN: Performance review coming up, when to ask for a raise?

We have an annual performance review period, in the one from the previous year I was thinking about asking for a raise but I didn't do it because my boss told me he talked with the CTO and they decided to give me a raise. The % was a bit lower than what I was going to ask, but it felt weird to ask for more after they did the job and finally decided the number. Now the new performance review is...

Ask HN: Offer to start a data/AI division in a traditional software company

Hi folks, I’m a software engineer and I’ve been building AI related products for the last five years.I had a meeting with the company owner (ex work colleague) some days ago, the company has like 30 employees and they develop traditional software products and they also do some outsourcing. He asked me if I was willing to join the company as a partner in order to build an AI division inside the...

Ask HN: Which kind of tasks should I be doing to be better positioned?

I've been working at a new job for about two and a half months as the first data scientist of the company and now my boss wants to look for another one. I was given the option to choose which kind of tasks I'd like to perform from now on in order to look for someone who could complement with me. And we're also getting a frontend/backend implementation team.I've been doing the "whole" stack:...

Re:Ask HN: When to make the jump to freelance/consultant? on Tuesday January 17, 2023 @08:50AM (#34412321)
That's something I have to talk with this new customer, I'll try to start with a reduced amount of dedication and then increase it if needed as the project evolves.

Happy to chat, my mail is in the profile

Ask HN: When to make the jump to freelance/consultant?

I'm working full time as a data engineer/scientist but I also have one ongoing customer (a previous employer).Another previous employer is launching a startup and has recently pinged me because they need to build a series of data pipelines and ML models for their product.I've to talk to them about specifics but I don't see myselft having enough available time to make it work.I've been thinking...

Leetcode questions were never brought up in the interviews I've had for the time being. There were the kind of questions I've mentioned in the OP and some code exercises.

Ask HN: Getting software skills when you have almost no time

I'm working as a data engineer and I realized I lack some skills when interviewing for a new job: design patterns, good practices, object oriented design, query optimizations...On my job I'm very deep into SQL queries, so it's difficult for me to learn those kind of skills on the job. So I'm feeling stuck.I'd like to make some courses and read some books in order to brush up on that kind of...

Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with a low ball salary offer? on Thursday October 07, 2021 @08:12AM (#28785210)
Yes, I'm not really thinking about doing freelancing hands on work. The only possibility would be to help them come up with a high level solution, as I had built a very similar product in the past.
Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with a low ball salary offer? on Thursday October 07, 2021 @08:09AM (#28785184)
Why?
Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with a low ball salary offer? on Wednesday October 06, 2021 @04:05PM (#28777725)
Update: I've (politely) declined the offer and told them to 2x the number if they wanted to bring me in. They've asked me if I can work some hours for the rest of the year in order to help the engineering team launch the first iteration of the product and then revisit the proposal in January.

Thanks for all the comments, you're all being very helpful.

Ask HN: How do you deal with a low ball salary offer?

A friend of mine is starting a position at a new startup whose founder is a former colleague of him. He recommended me, we had a quick interview and I've already received an offer. As the title says, the salary is almost half of what I'm earning at my current job so clearly I'm not considering it, but before rejecting the proposal it'd be nice to give it a shot and see if they can improve the...

I really appreciate your (and everyone) help. I've always knew I was behind some things but this real world experience slapped me in the face and now I'm trying to readjust.

My manager has already been aware of my lack of knowledge but I'll talk to him to know if they still want me there. If I keep my job I for sure will be asking for more help at the start of a new project.

Ask HN: I've realized I'm a bad software engineer and I'm over 30, what's next?

Hi folks, I've been working as a software engineer for about 10 years but always in small companies with few or none programmers or as a freelancer. I've been able to always have work on my desk because I'm always moving and talking with people in the industry but some months ago I decided to go to work on a proper medium software company.I'd been assigned a medium complexity task and I've...

Ask HN: Leaving a secure job for a remote contract position

Hi folks, I've been interviewing for several weeks looking for better income and challenges. I'd need to work as a contractor because I am living in South America and all the interested companies are from the US.The things is, being a contractor means that the company can no longer need my services whenever they want and that's the reason I've been having troubles deciding to follow this path...

A different situation brought me to a similar experience.

I have a good professional network but it's mostly local (Argentina). I've been planning to live here all my life but it's not a good place to live anymore. I'm planning to relocate to Europe so I had to start with the interview process again and being a "generalist problem solver with software" is getting difficult to get good job offers.

Ask HN: Getting out of the expert beginner path

Hi folks, it's time for me to look for new jobs but I've realized that I've been constantly following an "expert beginner path". I'm pretty lost about what to do next so I need your help.I've always worked at small places that needed a programmer to create small projects, some years ago I worked at a startup with no success and the last six years I've been working as the sole developer of a non...

Ask HN: When to notify your employer you are going to leave?

I decided I'll resign by the end of the year and I'm thinking if it's better to tell my boss about it now or to tell him when the resignation date is close. If I tell him now is good because I give them enough time to look for a replacement but is bad because I'll be in a weird limbo for three months. If I tell him days before leaving they'll have less time to look for a replacement but I'll...

Ask HN: Have you moved to another country?

Hi! I'm a fellow hacker from Buenos Aires, Argentina. The country is in a long process of continuous decadence and this pandemic made the things even worse. Along with the daily changes of rules that we have to experience and adapt, the insane amount of taxes, the inflation, the devaluation against US dollar and the growing insecurity it's becoming a pretty difficult place to live.I've a pretty...

Ask HN: Does it make sense to keep working at my currency devaluated job?

I'm Software Engineer with a focus on AI from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I've been working locally for many years earning something like $3k or $4k usd per month but since last year our currency (Argentine pesos) has devaluated a lot against us dollar.I'm now earning something like 1k usd per month. That money is enough to live comfortably (I don't rent) but lately I've been thinking that's not...

Ask HN: Best tech to process a real time data stream using low hw resources?

MercadoLibre is the Amazon of Latin America and has an open and official API (https://developers.mercadolibre.com/) where anyone can request data about the transactions made on the platform. For example, you can check in real time how many iPhones are being sold by a specific seller.I've already developed a script on Python that uses Redis pubsub queue which interacts with node and d3js to...

Ask HN: How would you start something similar to Fast Forward Labs?

Fast Forward Labs (now part of Cloudera) was something like a research lab building prototypes "focus on taking technologies that are just becoming possible, and making them useful."I've been thinking about it and came to the conclusion that it'd be a great fit to me to be working on something similar. I'm a Software Engineer working for several years as an AI consultant for several companies,...

But you would need a company to give you data with nothing visible on return. Do you think a company would do that?
