Because hosting with some other entity is not what you want for a regional focus where you want to set your own relevance criteria and licensing agreements ideally.

Germany and Austria have quite a bit of local Wikis with more than 20 active editors. Usually as some entity adjacent to the cities archive or run by some local foundation.

Like german speaking folks didn't invent the same thing 20 times over 20 years ago.

Filtering is all nice, but for a truly local wiki you should get different relevance criteria and different licensing criteria, to be able to negotiate citing local more recent sources.

Kind of ambivalent state of things, a research thread to solve that provenance issue to some degree of certainty is always only one prompt away too.

The study is called Hot Drinks and Oesophageal Cancer, so that's all you need to know about this kind of headline.

Re:Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions on Friday August 28, 2026 @04:39PM (#49483979)
I once saw a patent on that already earlier somewhere, which i assumed was the reason none of the automotive navigation UI's where doing this.

Just checked again, and it's verbatim this use case and even active until 2030 still:

3-D map display

Abstract

A computer generated 3-dimensional map display includes a reference icon identifying an observation point in the geographic area defined by the map, the map being presented on a curved surface which extends from a first plane to a second plane which is substantially orthogonal to the first plane. The observation point is located in the first plane. The display is configured such that the height of landmarks and buildings in a defined foreground of the reference icon are presented normal to the first plane, the height of land marks and buildings at a defined far distance are presented normal to the second plane and the height of land marks and buildings in a defined middle ground are presented normal to the non-linear portion of the curved surface. The geographic area represented can be translated along the curved surface to provide a perception that the reference icon is roaming through the displayed geographic area.

The generic use case of a multiperspective camera method for that was arguable covered in a 1997 Disney paper latest.

Re:Folding Paper Globes on Monday August 03, 2026 @06:31AM (#49153845)
The offset also forces the gore to be bent in two directions, so it’s also bit tricky, and makes the gore stiffer then it needs to be, dampening the paper there certainly helps.

I made a custom projection once, that's a bit friendlier to fold and comes in one tile.

Has no rendered flaps, but you should get the idea where to place them.

Still somewhat stiff, but managed to actually build two of them, would recommend printing on heavy A3 sheets or bigger.

Anyone is welcome to iterate. There even is a todo list with obvious things to improve upon.

Also I don't get the point why you would want them easily scrapeable to begin with. If you have eyes to read and can walk across YOUR neighborhoods, you would have eventually seen one. I thought that was the whole point? They are not exactly hidden. I find those public bookcase incidental low barrier offerings to a reading exprience you just stumble upon, nothing you would seek out on a map.

Why would you want to have more people from anywhere else possibly raid them for anything useful? This way nobody is inclined to put anything worthwhile in there if it just ends up outside of their communities. Not that I'm in general pessimistic, just would like to know what is gained by putting the exact location into a map and not just have a list of neigborhoods with a book corner and optional photo on that neigborhood level, if people want to network around them.

Re:The World's 2,400 Castles on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @12:45PM (#48994810)
If you submit some map, at least don't have the title contradict the content description:

"the 2,435 most significant landmarks worldwide, ordered by a fame ranking that blends Wikipedia coverage with real readership."

or someone fix the title here please to what on the app right now:

"Map of the world's great castles & fortresses" whatever that means.

Germany's Saxony alone has 700+ fortications with about 100 being touristically interesting. In the map I count like 9.

Until robots discover FFT.
Just hope this does not get flagged as spam by google and demotes useful sites, so they are not found to begin with, which would make this useful feature a net negative.

Because same methods can also used by bad actors for deceptive and spammy actions and we are not allowed to have nice things ever.

Therefore Google has something against messing with browser navigation state back button behavior and history such actions usually got demoted in rankings.

I think it's also fine for all sort of marginal and ephemeral actions that should not spam the browser history, like panning over a map or how far you scrolled down a page, but want to end up back there on reload and shares possibly.

Re:Why I Stopped Arguing with People on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @12:12PM (#48749206)
That obviously stopped to be a useful indicator two years ago latest too:

I’ve never said that just because you’re invoking the Nazis you’re losing the argument. If you’re going to compare somebody to Hitler or the Nazis or raise the specter of the Holocaust, be sure you’ve got your facts right.

Re:Why I Stopped Arguing with People on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @10:30AM (#48747445)
This whole honesty based approach stopped working a decade ago latest online and in politics, there is no accountability anymore and who is the most persistent wins an argument in the public sphere, those actors exactly bank on that most people will give up eventually.
More amazed by the complexity in bundling offers, of decking out your Framework device with 6 flush USB-C port extension ports sets you back 60 bucks already.

That's like a weird hidden tax.

In a network world where 1GB Ethernet randomly can handshake at 100Mbit still, getting reliably more than 3/4 of the advertised Bandwith from the Adapter seems quite harmless.

No they dont come free in the base config either, you have to pay a minimum of 10 for every slush port.

That's the whole point of LLM, connecting all the missing dots no single human could possible keep in working knowledge, even just for a subfield of mathematics alone. The era of polymaths is over for a reason, so we build a new one to tackle that. If LLMs can build on top of that once all remaining ones are found or if this stalls is yet to be proven, but humans stalled out there too.
With the trend of things, this seems like good timing for the RHCP estates with a not so unlikely collapse of licensing revenue happening in the near future.
This is one of the reasons we can't have proper soundtracks in video games or non AAA TV shows anymore or re-releases of old TV-shows anymore.

I just feel bad for all the pension fonds backing this Bain Capital PE joint venture who will have an off chance of making back their investments with the current state of IP and AI trends.

Re:Killed by Apple on Monday May 11, 2026 @10:59AM (#48095897)
But killing a service is something completely different then discontinueing hardware or interface standards. A lot here is still well supported.

This page could have used some heavy editing after asking the LLM to compile all stuff from wikipedia.

Lost it at the Lightning listing, which apple still first party even:

We're at 2021 prices, but ok.
Nobody is stopping anyone from buying a USB-C powered and connected very portable 2 or 4 slot external NVMe enclosures.

The old SATA SSD form factor is dead and wont come back.

OWC ThunderBlades exist, but 32TB will set you back 9 grand.

You should be able to assemble something with USB-C for under 5k. That's not a mass consumer market thing, but perfectly doable, if your use case warrants it. We are stuck with 2021 pricing, but now with options of 8TB per NVMe drive at way higher speed.

36TB+ HHD external WD drive combos were always around EUR 1000 over last 5 years. With a short low end around EUR 600 in 2023

https://www.owc.com/solutions/thunderblade?sku=OWCTB3TBL8X32

You were not are renter in 2021 when NVMe were same price as now by TB, stuff is just becoming more expensive on market shortages.

Last half year ate up three to four years of earlier price regression, that's about it.

As long as this plateaus here, as prices did for last 4 months, that's just the new equilibrium where it has the chance to get better again, would no be all doom and gloom about personal computing yet.
