Thanks, this is good to know.

The other large component which gets thrown around is engagement. It seems as if only companies like flurry would be able to discern this sort of information. Anything on a large scale with an embedded sdk that reports engagement really.

Does anyone know of an up-to-date analysis of the iOS app store ranking algorithm? I've seen first hand how ratings can move an app up the list, but I've never noticed engagement or sales having an impact.

I'm sure he's aware of that. This is a major element of the UI which shouldn't require you to move to another screen to enjoy.

Swiping near the bottom with my thumb hasn't bothered me so far, but the text is quite hard to read at that small of a size. I would also like to those cards a bit larger in the future.

Re:What's in my iOS toolbox? on Thursday January 30, 2014 @01:11AM (#7149303)
I love how deep objc.io dives. They'll present long essays on topics which normally get glossed over in a sentence or two. Particularly useful are their thoughts on the state of objective c design patterns (quite a volatile topic since the release of iOS).
This just means apps will have to be built with Xcode 5. Older iOS versions can still be supported.

This hacky code most certainly isn't required.

I bet he's excited to see what he can do with CoreText and iOS7 for this.

Wow this is awesome, I use this all the time and had wished I could contribute. Can't wait to start!

What I found most interesting about this is how outdated the Distimo data is. I have a couple game apps in the Games Trivia category, which is conveniently less popular. According to Distimo, in May of last year it would take roughly 600 dls per day to reach the top 25. We're averaging 1000 downloads a day with each game and neither has cracked the top 60. Amazing how much a difference a year makes. Anyone know if Distimo has done a followup more recently?

Thanks for another great article Trevor.

Kippster, a 3rd party app, has been pretty great for me on iPad.

I was an avid Pocket user. And it's great for saving things you want to read later and then just throw away.

A lot of these articles/videos I want to read later, then save for reference. With Kippt I can send pages to my Inbox exactly like I did with Pocket. Once I read them, if I want to save them for later, I can move them into any 1 of the categories I've set up. I have about 20 categories ranging from "App Store Articles" to "Analytics Videos" to "General Programming Learning".

I can't imagine how I would live without it now.

They have even higher rates for free apps with in-app purchases.n. We were told $3 per install or $100k flat rate for 1 day. This was roughly a month and a half ago.

Unfortunately that didn't fit out budget.

A former colleague of mine had a series of "cheat" apps which included answers to popular games on the app store. He started to see his apps pulled on Sunday. It could be a coincidence, but he had upwards of a million active users and never had an issue before either. Maybe Apple decided it was time to crack down on some of the rules they hadn't been enforcing.
Re:Oscar-awarded Movie Fonts 2013 on Saturday March 16, 2013 @03:28PM (#5386441)
Interesting breakdown, but I think it's a little font-obsessed biased e.g. "The artificial slab serif ITC Lubalin by Herb Lubalin not only embodies stability, but also emanates a very special kind of amiability. "

I'd say the reason this font was chosen had a little more to do with the fact that it looks very similar to most writing on old football jerseys. Sometimes the reason something is chosen is much simpler than we (experts in that field) want it to be.

That's a great idea, did you do it for Chrome? Seems like with Chrome it's non-trivial to set the page for new tabs...
Re:Less Aesthetic, More Design on Thursday January 24, 2013 @04:26PM (#5112334)
As a developer trying to gain more insight into proper design methodology this really spoke to me. With all the articles and discussion around "design" really focusing more on aesthetics, for some time I thought that was all design is about.

For example, I work mainly on mobile apps, and it took some time for me to view another app's design with an eye for more than just "looking pretty". You really have to think a bit differently to begin noticing the small things the designer did to make the experience more enjoyable.

Re:What I wish I knew before moving to San Francisco on Thursday January 17, 2013 @02:27PM (#5074635)
I find it interesting that Boston often gets the rub of being a "small city". It certainly is when compared to New York or LA, but when looking at the metro area it's on par with San Francisco: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Metropolitan_Statistica...

Not that there's anything wrong with being a small city!

Re:Surprises When Designing An iPhone App on Tuesday December 11, 2012 @04:52PM (#4907055)
I'm pretty shocked you didn't use TestFlight or some equivalent. Did you manually build test versions of the app on all your tester's devices? How did you manage getting them updates promptly?

I know TestFlight can seem a bit daunting but MAN is it worth it in the long run.

At least you wouldn't need a new image for each new language.

Sorry about your laptop man. This guy had a simular problem and was able to resolve it when the robber uploaded some pics. Might be a good read on how he worked with the police.

While I agree the author should use the same search terms for each test (which he very well may have), Bing should still be capable of finding the "John Hancock Center" with a search for the "John Hancock Building".

A quick check verifies that Google Maps recognized both. It's little things like these that make the experience less painful.

Interesting point; this has bothered me as well. I'm usually reduced to re-searching with "query -word -word" to remove the results targeted by the stemmed words.
I think it's important to also consider that most of the user's trying the 'Bing It On' challenge are already at least considering switching services or interested enough in bing to give it a shot. Even if 33% of these users went on to use Bing more after, this doesn't represent your average google user.

I also doubt that 33% who say that are going to use it more actually will. If it was that easy Bing would already be huge.
