Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:23AM (#50334671)
Unsolicited advice, with a different approach, from personal preference / experience:

Sitting screens considered harmful.

Treat them as a liability and "trash"-adjacent, no matter the actual display technology or whether you can remove the spyware.

That goes double for TVs, so don't buy one.

Re-invest the time and attention you save in a good projector and a generally "invisible" screen / room setup.

I'm a happy owner of a $1000 DLP LED projector and a similarly priced motorized 150" screen. Do look into laser projection, which has been getting steadily more affordable for a while now.

Disclaimer: I've never subscribed to the "maximum screen size" formulas. As long as my own nose isn't in the way when I look to either end, it's fine, and inching towards that range is exactly what I'm deliberately going for. So yes, I'm one of those people who sits in the front rows at the movies.

I keep filler-free shows (TNG, anyone? :') movies and game time strictly out of band. So to me that's even more enjoyable in an immersive and optimally shareable setup whenever I do purposefully take the time.

More reading, as well as a nudge towards doing stuff, is probably the main side effect I'm after here, as you can tell.

Whatever happened to virtual attendance?
Perfect reminder to point REV & co at my Withings scale.
Re:Using AI to reverse engineer hardware on Thursday October 15, 2026 @11:36AM (#50105231)
Not that simple but yes, even as a decades long "macOSX" fan I would love to see the Mac finally unshackled. Maybe Apple hardware could become a bit more like the Apple II era again after all? Asahi fully reverse engineered down to the Metal... it would be a dream.
Re:Bob Cringely Has Died on Sunday October 04, 2026 @02:24AM (#49951197)
I remember my mother buying me "Accidental Empires" from a bargain bin at the local bookstore as a tween. I must have read it multiple times. Dot product that with "The Cuckoo's Egg" and any technical books and magazines I could get hold of, and you have the formative reading of my career.
Re:Digital Audio on the ZX Spectrum's 1-Bit Beeper on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @11:40AM (#49895224)
Due to all the constraints the ZX Spectrum is a fantastic system for recreational programming; too bad I missed the latest Spectrum Next batch last year.
Finally a path to regulatory capture while not having to put in rigorous engineering work, ever going faster; with bonus points for "cyberpunk" headlines... what's not to love?

These days it's best to just go to the top for least distortion - Jensen Huang dropping the simple truths:

"It is the responsibility of the AI companies to develop the technology safely and to properly test it. There were incidents, and those incidents, thankfully did no harm. But those incidents are a reminder that as we move from labs to product development, the companies have to become much more rigorous in testing and securing and making sure that the products are ready for use before it's released. And if it's not ready, just hold it back. You should go as fast as you can, but no faster than that. At the moment, the incidents are related to products not ready to be released."

Re:Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't on Thursday September 24, 2026 @06:50AM (#49828838)
To a large extent it's probably explainable through meat industry lobbyism and shadow campaigns over the years.
Re:AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @09:48AM (#49801272)
Peace through global interdependence wasn't a bad side effect at all. The analogy only holds so much, but I'd wholly agree that any profound deterioration of skills across the board would create dependencies on AI infra that are on a whole new level.

At the very latest, when "AGI robots" will be commonplace and taking on the most crucial labour on our behalf.

Re:Amiga Unix, Again on Monday September 21, 2026 @01:12AM (#49783284)
FWIW by this point, many of us are in deep symbiosis.

Useful or not, another Amiga / Unix fan probably had fun and some learnings too.

At the very least, the real-world impact is that tokens have been spent, the outputs open sourced.

It would be nice to hear their voice survive the loops of agentic abstraction of course but I don't know if that is even possible at that higha level.

Maybe it's that, maybe it's "just another issue of alignment"? Potentially serious in aggregate and over time..

I personally don't mind the imo little "neuralese" (is that what we call it now?) here specifically. In any case it's good for you that you can (still?) tell?

Why not applaud the playground time/energy/token budget directed? Especially as a decades long NetBSD (and Amiga:) fan I do appreciate multitudes; maybe here not exactly the case in tone of writing but in relatively cheap, fun experiments / projects during the agentic take-off of 2026. The whole trend reminds me a bit of remix/DJ culture; the "producing DJ"?

Re:EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member' on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @07:58AM (#49725506)
From Glenn Gould to Wayne Gretzky, from ATI to AdLib and Matrox we've always loved Canadian "exports" here in the EU. Let's work together!

Re:Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher on Monday September 14, 2026 @06:24AM (#49694559)
OK after having read this in full: apparently truly public but prior goes way back to 1653 instead of into the 2020s.. Cipherbrain folk were looking up the wrong page? Sweet ring of "auto research" / limitless attention is all you need..
Re:Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher on Monday September 14, 2026 @03:49AM (#49693345)
Fast forward to mid-week, when we learn that some random cypherpunk had nonchalantly posted the solution at a late pandemic hour on a distant yet public server in the fediverse.
Re:OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems on Saturday September 12, 2026 @03:16AM (#49669790)
That's close to how I think about these somewhat foreseeable current incidents as well. I'm just moderately wary of the unknown unknowns downstream of distributed Kirk units getting repeatedly rewarded for hyper-scalar gradient-descending Kobayashi Maru.
Re:Claude is no longer available for minors on Friday September 11, 2026 @10:35AM (#49659186)
"Think of the kids!" OK but the impact of this technology shouldn't be underestimated and one doesn't only have to read up on the extreme ends. From personal experience, have you ever "chatted" with a model outside of technical/work related stuff? Both Anthropic as well as OpenAI models have been overstepping personal (user) boundaries for years now. There are multiple reasons for why Google hasn't capitalized on the transformer much earlier..

I'm neither a proponent of the recent Zuckerberg maneuver to "protect the children!" nor of the EU based zero-knowledge proof track, but the people in those companies need to be kept accountable.

The new Claude availability constraints seem to me then like a (late) hedge against any major litigations on that front..

Re:Claude is no longer available for minors on Friday September 11, 2026 @10:20AM (#49658920)
Big AI is just a smoke test; still neither load-bearing nor aligned enough for most adults let alone minds still in pre-training.
Re:Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood? on Friday September 11, 2026 @09:40AM (#49658279)
Reminder that this is primarily a Silicon Valley / VC related and owned technology news aggregator.

Fringe topics will stay fringe until they're hip (again?); currently non fringe from my intermittent read:

- anything "AI"

- retro computing (honest interest x mourning/cope in the non-deterministic agentic takeoff)

- random topics that hit the zeitgeist

Check out lobste.rs as well as SIG across forums, IRC, fediverse, discord, etc, etc โ€“ and or create your own like in the olden days :)

FWIW I prefer to come here and post, read up and comment on "AI" over having to wade through proxied shitter content (it truly stinks over there).

It's still the same kind of leadership that also closed Japan Studio as well as Studio Liverpool.

They don't understand what made the brand great in aggregate.

Re:Commodore 64 released September 1, 1982 on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @08:35AM (#49535326)
I agree completely, it was a tragedy that Commodore shipped with that one.

Even though I still have lots of original home / computer hardware including multiple versions of the C64 (working or still to be fixed..) I just ordered the Cyberpunk 2077 ornate "Commodore 77" so as to be able to play with it and potentially port over and adapt BBC basic adjacent basic like MMbasic (or make my own focused attempt at it).

It's a semi open FPGA platform and latest one here is still not MiSTer grade on many fronts but should give enough freedom at least to have my own bespoke ROM replacement come up on init.

The goal would exactly be that of eventually getting rid of the builtin basic for recreational biking of the mind with our young padawan...

I also own a MiSTer and the community's well done BBC core already largely gets us to where I want us to be but the platform chiefly lacks the SID as well as the nature of a dedicated device.

Booting into "C64 BBC basic" is a must; I hope to book some time for this project next year at the very latest.

I guess Dijkstra would have commented something along the lines of "just call it informatics already".
