Re:Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here? on Tuesday July 04, 2023 @03:09PM (#36591282)
https://johnmathews.is I've been writing since 2016 and have covered a wider range of topics that I ever expected. Initially it was just somewhere to write about the the programming concepts I was trying to learn. It's become my personal archive of resources and notes.
I see the code is marked as "coming soon" - would love to take a look at this when its ready. The results are beautiful.
Such a clear landing page. I gave them my email address before I realised what was happening.

so cold!
It went very well - much better than expected.

My wife was enthusiastic about it and gave me the confidence to quit. Until then I'd been looking to get the transition locked in before quitting, which wasn't happening and probably never would have. At the time I was working in corporate finance and my first child had just been born.

I think the added pressure of being scared or uncomfortable gives you a huge edge when learning new skills, taking calculated risks and trying new things, and working super hard. Working hard in a grind or dead-end is sole destroying (I think), working harder on something you chose, with tangible personal benefits is exhilarating. My career took a new direction and a much steeper upwards trajectory.

That was 3 years ago. I've become a freelance data-scientist, working remotely in a new country, with a much higher quality of life.

I wrote a couple of blog posts at the time reflecting on corporate life in London with a young family. https://johnmathews.is/corporate.html, https://johnmathews.is/london.html

I hope these notes could be useful for others too.

It's a great book, I really enjoyed it. I made some concise notes on each chapter on my blog https://johnmathews.is/mom-test.html

Why is this being called a ledger? Is it a special kind of list?

what is 'circuit bending'? And if it is so terrible why have blur, beck, et al all used it?
Re:Building my own web analytics tool on Friday July 02, 2021 @09:35AM (#27711326)
I haven't. The main motivation was to see if I could build an analytics tool, it wasn't really about getting better analytics. Though it was interesting to compare the different tools.
Re:Building my own web analytics tool on Friday July 02, 2021 @09:33AM (#27711281)
yes. server-side must be the most accurate, but I'd still want a good way to filter out bots. for a site with a technical audience any general client side solution is too prone to blocking.
Re:Building my own web analytics tool on Friday July 02, 2021 @09:26AM (#27711213)
cool! how did you do it? what was your approach?
Re:Building my own web analytics tool on Friday July 02, 2021 @01:55AM (#27708219)
It should be loading just fine, though it is slow at the moment. The good news is that the HN wave didn't cause any errors or break anything, the bad news is that the response time quadrupled and I'm not sure why yet.
I played this ~23 years ago. I'm amazed to see it!
Re:Analysis of blood markers predicts human lifespan limit on Wednesday May 26, 2021 @07:19AM (#27289013)
I haven't read the complete paper, only the abstract, but it's fascinating to me that the authors find a limit of 120 to 150 years.

I remember reading in Genesis (first book of the bible) that the maximum age was limited to 120 years (chapter 6, verse 3).
