Re:A useless infinite scroll experiment on Tuesday March 10, 2026 @03:09AM (#47319965)
There was a iOS jailbreak tweak called Treadmill where it exactly done that. Pretty cool to me.

I did not check the source code but scanning UI and outcome is exactly the same as native iOS scanner.

m, M, w, W, %, @ and i, l, ! (and so on) are the letters that create a challenge (or a room for creativity/individuality) ad they are so wide or so narrow. Wide letters often get cramped as they need to share se witdh as narrower letters. iA thought they could just modify those “extreme” glyphs to increase legibility (and readability)
Re:Atkinson Hyperlegible Font on Sunday September 11, 2022 @11:51AM (#32800659)
It is more legible than your average "font-family: sans-serif” (aka Arial, Roboto, Helvetica) but it’s not that much of an “original idea”. For example Frutiger by Adrian Frutiger, a type family that a lot of airports use as it’s designed with legibility at long distances, or even the Verdana by Matthew Carter, ubiquitous web font that powers this and a lot of other websites’ typography that has specifically designed for legibility on low resolution screens, aren’t that less legible than this font. Still, I like the idea that some people on Braille Institute has decided to commission a typeface with a “free” license.

Care to elaborate?

Aegean sea has seen a lot of military exercises with both Greece and Turkey, I remember the Medusa-10 exercise with Greece, France, Egypt and UAE (and yeah, these are the sides which clash against Turkey-backed official government in Libya) NATO Allied Land Command (in Izmir) tweeted the exercise with hashtags: #WEARENATO and #StrongerTogether. I would normally say such a weird timeline we live in but it has been like this for decades.

Traditional RAW* wouldn’t be a black-and-white mosaic. It just would be data. RAW’s need to be demosaiced to be seen visually, which makes it dependent on software (or algorithm).

* I don’t know about Apple’s ProRAW.

For reference, there’s a video which tests compatibility of 8 and SE 2’s parts.

https://youtu.be/FTAQqih1DZs

Reminds me of North Korea’s very own Red Star OS’ watermarking of the files.

Starts at 34:55 https://media.ccc.de/v/32c3-7174-lifting_the_fog_on_red_star...

TLDW: Operating system appends hash everytime the file is copied, making it possible to track the original source of file without requiring another tracking mechanism (ie. internet)

It is also found at German eszett ß, which essentially is a ligature of “ſs”.

Also that index finger is actually a unicode character ( U+261A)

They also donated the income to a right to repair act.
Yeah, I thought like that too. It could’ve been better though.
Re:Helvetica Now Variable on Wednesday August 18, 2021 @04:17AM (#28218779)
Type design is never finished business. We do new faces, and sometimes just for the sake of novelty.

It is even not needs to be new. Helvetica was designed by Max Miedinger and released by Haas Foundry in 1957. Then it was revised in 1983 as Neue Helvetica. Later, in 2010, it was digitally revived for Bloomberg, with faith on Miedinger’s original designs, and now considered to be best digital design amongst designers (you can even see it’s been mentioned in this thread too). Is it a bad thing that it was revived, even though there were a lot of digital designs(Nimbus Sans and such)? I don’t feel so.

Why do we need new typefaces:

Re:Helvetica Now Variable on Wednesday August 18, 2021 @03:25AM (#28218493)
True but some foundries have had unrestricted licenses (i.e Swiss Foundry) or has recently changed (ABC Dinamo). I completely agree with the webfonts mess though, it’s just so hard to license it as opposed to licensing desktop fonts.
Re:Helvetica Now Variable on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @01:59PM (#28212859)
Most foundries offer perpetual licenses though, only foundries that offer yearly fee _that I’m aware of_ is Font Bureau and Dalton Maag, compared to maybe hundreds of foundries which offer non-expiring licenses. I agree there is some quirks with license system though.

You’re missing a very important point: Designing fonts always cost money. The thing with Google Fonts (and/or with other free fonts) is the price was paid beforehand by Google (or of course, with hobbyists free time).

Re:Helvetica Now Variable on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @01:46PM (#28212679)
Check “TeX Gyre Heros”. It is featured version of Nimbus Sans (aka Helvetica digitised by Bitstream) which were donated to X Consortium back then.
Re:Life before smartphones (2020) on Tuesday August 03, 2021 @03:31AM (#28046572)
It is because of focal length. Although phone manufacturers started to put “tele” cameras, primary camera is wide. Wide lenses mean there will be more coverage but things will get smaller, which happens with moon.
Re:The Inter typeface family on Friday July 30, 2021 @05:04PM (#28012332)
It is not a replica, they are similar in style (they’re both neo-grotesk). Also the design of the letters can’t be copyrighted in the US, only the files (.otf, .ttf etc.) can.
Re:The Inter typeface family on Friday July 30, 2021 @04:59PM (#28012288)
Check “Basier Mono” from Atipo. Regular weight is free and the other weights are quite cheap.
Re:The Inter typeface family on Friday July 30, 2021 @04:57PM (#28012262)
“a” and “g” could be single-storey or double-storey. For example the font you’ve seeing now, Verdana, has double storey ‘a’ and single-storey ‘g’.
Re:Coding with Character on Wednesday July 28, 2021 @02:04AM (#27980653)
Although some say their trial fonts used for non-commercial works. most foundries doesn’t actually have a seperate license for NC usage. For instance Input have a free (as in free beer) non-commercial license but you have to pay for it if you want to use it in commercial stuff.

(btw, font licensing in general is a mess)

That’s true, but Apple did break it out of the blue after working for 5+ years.

Well, kind of. Apple was able to kill Cydia Impactor (which is predecessor to AltStore) without breaking their “legitimate” code signing service.
