Ask HN: How did you transition after hiring your first infra person?
In a lot of small companies, the code is being deployed by the first technical people who joined, even before there was someone dedicated to the infra. This infra person inherits all this infrastructure which is barely documented, deployed directly from people's laptops, with scripts which may or may not work, and has to create something out of all of it.What was the hardest part for you in this...
Do you have some kind of monitoring? What about logging?
I'm guessing you're OK with the tradeoff of your machine going down sometimes?
How was managed a new deployment ? Could anyone push a new version ? Did it go through CI/CD ?
And about CI/CD, did you have something vaguely resembling it ? Was it all hosted ?
> Anything more complex than the above would to me be a bad smell - unless there were some very good reasons.
Yes, you would probably not need something more complex in that case, but then again, some companies with 5 devs start with microservices
Ask HN: Infra people in small companies, what does your infra look like?
Hi all !I'm just wondering how an infra would look like in a small company, with 1 person dedicated to the infra, and around 10 devs working on a monolith.I'm guessing that a lot of people will have a lot of different opinions. Just how many possibilities could we see there ? And how would those impact the business and the devs job ?
What do you mean by emotional tools ?
I completely agree with you on that. However, the wait time is usually not enough for me to really switch tasks for an other "productive" one, because when my pipeline is done, I would just need to switch back, and it really would make it painful.
The option I see about that however, is jotting down ideas for testing later. But then you need to get the time for this optimization, and the optimization will also require you to wait while you test if the result is better.
I know that there is not silver bullet, I'm just trying to make the situation better for me and others in the team
Ask HN: How do you manage a DevOps position with ADHD
Hi HN !I'm wondering how you are managing a DevOps / SRE / infrastructure position with ADD/ADHD.In my experience, it has been quite difficult because a lot of the time, the work makes us wait on pipelines to finish, machines to start, script to complete, cluster to respond... Without talking about the distractions of On-Call, slack messages, and questions from the rest of engineering.During...
It does not seem to do more than something like PagerDuty or OpsGenie, in that there is no integrated way to run specific actions on rotation.
But I did not know that GitLab did that, thanks for the link !
Ask HN: Any software to manage team rotations?
I'm looking for a software that will let me handle different kinds of rotations in a team, like:- On-Call rotation - Team member responsible for answering questions from other teams for the week - Any other kind of member rotationI would like it to be able to trigger actions based on those schedules as well.Any idea of a tool that could do something like this ?
Ask HN: What are computer techs that survived the stand of time?
We often see debates about whether to use old/new technologies, whether a technology is too complex and you should use something simpler, or writing your own vs using an external tool. What are some simple tools that are more than 10 years old that are still being used today ?Examples of such tools that come to mind: - `make` - `linux` - `bash`
You don't need to start with a niche
Ask HN: How do you manage notifications in your company?
Working in a company with more than 500 people, I get a ton of notifications, of which about 5% are actually useful / actionable. At the same time, there are documents everywhere, a lot of them related to the same topic, jira tickets, notion pages, slack threads...As an individual contributor in a similar situation, how do you manage that ? As a manager (up to C-level), what do you do to improve...
Do you know of any other small companies blog ?
Ask HN: Which small company engineering team blogs do you follow?
We always see the blog posts of the big companies, but not that often of the smaller ones. The problems that are being solved are different, and it would be interesting for a lot of people to see solutions at their scale.
Ask HN: Where do you go to discuss tech?
When you want to have discussions about specific topics, like CI/CD, DevOps, Programming paradigms... Where do you usually go ?(Yes, I think that a lot of people will find themselves on HN)
Ask HN: Do you use RFCs internally?
Do you use RFCs internally at your company to discuss new features / projects or big changes ?I'm thinking not just about very formal processes, but also simple documents that could be shared within a small team for the members to review before a meeting for example.Do you have a process in place ? Tooling ?I'm wondering how to make the process better here
