Three episode documentary series on computers and society.

Adam Curtis has a quite distinctive style of story telling - to me the weaving of a sense of sublime via intensity and associativity offers quite a fascinating way to look into things.

It's also from 2011 - its interesting to reflect how our technological world and discourse has changed since then - from Dario Amodei's same name carrying essay to discourses around broligarchy, etc.

Re:The Complete Homemade Juggling Beanbag Guide on Thursday July 02, 2026 @02:13AM (#48757216)
Stumbled on this, an absolutely fascinating exposition on crafting bean bags for juggling/footbagging. Well structured & written, hundreds of pages of pdf's.

On the meta, there's a bittersweet feeling - discovering these "early internet" (i.e. pre-enshittification/sloppification) gems is an increasingly rare experience.

I'm in the (slow) process of acquiring and fitting a sailboat for living at remote places. While I acknowledge that the cheapening of satellite internet will be nice, practical, and make my plans more realizable money-wise, I'm also a bit sad on what this implies to the taking a real distance to the information overloaded society.
Re:Show HN: Django and React SaaS boilerplate tutorial on Wednesday December 23, 2020 @09:12AM (#25517772)
Thanks for this! Looks useful, will be checking it out after the Christmas festivities.

Coming from academia/data science and learning this from the scratch, the python backend + js frontend boilerplates are quite cryptic. The tools for sure seem useful, but there's a lot to grasp for a noob - rabbits, celeries, and so on.

Perhaps you're confusing THC with synthetic cannabinoids. The molecule doesn't care whether it's made by plants or at a lab.

Plants yield a mixture of cannabinoids at some concentration, which constitute ~10% of the dried plant matter. These can be extracted and separated with various techniques. The effects of pure THC are different than that of the mixture.

Upcoming schemes use engineered micro-organisms to produce specific cannabinoids, efficiency of the systems is ramping up. My understanding is that the synthesis of cannabinoids is is quite an inefficient way of manufacture.

None the less, it's all the same - covalently bound atoms :)

I'm a chemist with a background in computational design and optimization. Familiar with that machine learning stuff.

I follow many fields & technologies, am into all kinds of things, and intend to pursue these thingies more and more. I'm a bit on the idea person -spectrum, but have the skill to get stuff done.
