Anecdotally, I’ve received a few data requests from customers powered by it, and it was very easy to handle on our side - at most a couple of e-mail back and forth, and the customers seemed happy

Just chiming in as a happy user of 33mail - congratulations and I'm happy to know that it is sustainable and growing.

One suggestion would be to better advertise new features to existing users - I was going to suggest adding 2FA authentication, and went for a quick check on my account, and it was already available :-)

Very interesting article - I wasn’t familiar with wardley maps and found [1] as a good starting point to explore their usage

Re:GDPR guide for developers on Thursday June 18, 2020 @05:12AM (#23561267)
My understanding is keeping the deletion requests fullfills a legitimate business interest, so no -I would not delete the request. What we do is we keep those in a separate system, since the user records themselves (in my app, crm, etc) would be removed. That system is also how we "prove" that we executed the deletion requests in a timely manner

The main downside is you have to be super careful when applying os updates - and recent macos tend to be updated more frequently.

can you share the name ? This sounds interesting

Re:Microsoft confirms Bing is down in China on Thursday January 24, 2019 @11:53AM (#18990375)
Same for me - it was fine when looking for touristy stuff, restaurants opening hours and things like that.
I’ve started using notion as a kind of personal wiki a few months ago, and I really like it for that. Breaking the distinction between files and folders is one of the ways it’s way easier for me to navigate/structure than it is in google docs.

My only issue with Notion is that I feel it’s hard to get stuff out of it, especially on mobile. I sometimes type draft documents with it that I really don’t want to share as notion links, and I haven’t figured out how to export them on a phone - I usually have to go to my computer and export the markdown/process it then share...

There's a whole paragraph in the linked article talking about accessibility - it looks to me that they're mostly planning to improve it in the next few point releases. It's too bad they couldn't bake it in from the start, but at least they seem to acknowledge it
Re:Mozilla pulls Bypass Paywalls from Firefox add-ons store on Friday November 30, 2018 @09:44AM (#18569417)
My experience with firefox add-on reviewers has been hit or miss - One of the most frustrating things is that reviews often happen long after your add-on has been published. I'd rather have a longer waiting time, but once an add-on is published then it means it's been approved. From the developer point of view it means that it's very hard to communicate on releases, because you never know when your addon is going to be reviewed. From the end user, it means that if someone maliciouly changes one of your addons, you may already have updated to that version before the review. I also feel that the guidelines around reviews aren't well explained, and the reviewers comments are often terse, bordering on the incomprehensible : at least with Apple, you get pointed to which part of the rules they think you didn't respect - with firefox, we often get broad comments that require a bit of back and forth to figure out what it is they're actually thinking is wrong.
Screenshotting is one method that is surprisingly popular in the wild - It makes me a bit sad that so much state/metadata is lost when screenshotting, but it may prove the most efficient method going forward. I wonder if it'll be easier with DOM screenshot tools now available in major browers, so you can easily screenshot "just a post"
Or something like binky [1] but with your friends data, and no notification of interaction

[1](https://www.binky.rocks/)

Technically, if you're EU based, you could ask for proof of deletion and/or sue - not sure it's worth the effort though, especially since FB is keeping shadow profiles of you anyway (so you may have deleted your profile, but because your friends have your phone number, email, etc facebook doesn't actually need you to have a profile to track you now...)
Going through the mbasic interface of facebook for this is brilliant. Good job !
can I ask how did you save your notes ? Just view source and save the html as files ?
Very timely post. Full disclosure : my current project [1] deals with archiving content from social network, and we're considering adding more things to import from facebook. The friends list example from the article is a good one :

As for my friend list.. well.. It's all in Json format..
So now you can essentially use the power of your brain to think how your friend looked.
If you can't, well then you probably weren't friends anyway. Sorry.
I'd be interested in your experiences either in leaving facebook, or about things you'd which you could have saved

Re:Another Week with Bad Software on Monday September 24, 2018 @10:24AM (#18057900)
Booking.com also has some really bad checking for email adresses, which is why I often find reservations in my account for people who enter my email adress instead of theirs in the booking email field (I have a booking.com account with that email, they don't, but the booking still gets tacked to my account - it cost me nothing, but I could change their reservation if I wanted to)
This looks really nice ! I was just looking for something like this !
Re:I don’t know how to create a website on Monday July 09, 2018 @05:08AM (#17488905)
On the security and distribution side of things, I recently had to guickly throw a website together, and found netlify super convenient for that - it handles the https and cdn part, and you can use it like a folder to drop static html. It allowed me to have something up and running faster thant I thought
For URLs i have a single html page that I use as a starting page for my “dev” browser, which I edit manually when I add a new environment/tool.

For ssh I just use bash history, but I don’t have a ton of environments

That's a great checklist - I'll add to that that it's always a good idea to give a cursory glance at the source code.

For the "is it maintained" part, I like to look at issues and how they are resolved

Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your mental health? on Tuesday June 12, 2018 @02:29PM (#17296360)
In order of importance, everyday : - Sleep - Exercize - Breathe - Keep a non work routine (kids, family, etc)

Regularly - Keep a non work hobby (something manual, non digital for me) - Read fiction - Journal - Checkin with my therapist every 6 weeks

I found the conversation very interesting- made me want to read the book.

As an aside, I liked how when they weee discussing mental health, pollan put forward that the classifications that we use today (say differentiating between depression and anxiety) are more rooted in legacy and institutions and less in what the current science sees of what’s happening in the brain. Thought this was an interesting way to frame things.

My current project doesn’t implement social logins yet. On my previous one, on a B2C niche site, i’d say maybe 30% used social logins. One thing you want to consider is allow users to login in multiple fashions - like if you recognize an email that is already a social login, offer them a way to create a site password too. In my case, maybe 80% of support requests we got were people forgetting they signed up with a social login and then wondering why their passwords weren’t working.
Re:Ask HN: How did you start your business? on Monday March 19, 2018 @12:06PM (#16619468)
Left my job to become a consultant (to my former company initially), did that for 5 years, then used the money I made and saved to bootstrap my current project. Still did some part time consulting on the side for a couple of years until we raised.
Re:Ask HN: How did you find your first hire? on Monday March 19, 2018 @04:04AM (#16616769)
Reached out to someone after reading a blogpost about them. Was initially interested to learn more about their process. First call they let out they were currently looking for a job - several weeks & exchanges later i hired them.
