> I'd rather look at all the data available

There is no data to suggest RISCV can ever be competitive in the large core space. The longer this absence goes on (now approaching 15 years) the more evidence there is that it is structurally incapable of competitive implementations.

If you wanted to create a project to distract a whole generation of computer architects from getting anywhere this is exactly what it would look like.

This stuff has all been six months away for years now.

At some point we have to accept it isn’t happening.

Re:European RISC-V Industrial Computing Initiative on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @06:23AM (#50350624)
How long do we keep RISCV going without facing that it has failed? We were supposed to be surrounded by M1 level RVA23 devices by now.

The telling thing is in benchmarks the Loongson outperforms them, by a lot.

At the time all the kids were on BBM and the businesses had moved to iOS.

Dutch intel can think that happened, or not. It is independent from if that is true. The whole thing equally sounds like a setup using the Dutch to launder the story.

Which is also entirely independent from any stories of this sort in the media being true one way or another.

I think you missed why they’d be doing it in the first place.
Re:Railway Security Disclosure on Thursday October 22, 2026 @06:30AM (#50193519)
This is how we spot someone that has never done transaction processing in a consumer facing business. You are focused on completely the wrong dimensions.

Postgres fanboys are insufferable.

Real loads are too spiky for that.

Still some industries where you cable colocated servers in a shared DC together where neither server has internet access.
Re:The compiler was supposed to end programming too on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:37PM (#50186408)
Yes. A project I am working on now the code quality it is producing I would put at less than ten people I have ever met could do, and they would struggle with the OCD tedium induced.

There is clearly a trick to coaxing these results, and a major factor is to treat the model like it is something you fully expect to get it right because it knows how to do it, not you micromanaging it into compliance.

Re:The compiler was supposed to end programming too on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:29PM (#50186272)
You’re holding it wrong.

Treat it like it’s got an inspired brilliant side, talk to it as if it has, and it will show it. If you talk to these things like they’re idiots they act like them - this is one of the most unfortunate aspects of the whole development.

I am seriously seeing it churn out well structured clean code solving problems that saying 95% of devs couldn’t do is being generous, to the humans.

Re:The compiler was supposed to end programming too on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:05PM (#50185927)
You can absolutely spot people that aren’t using the latest models personally because they succeed in clinging to notions that doing so would dispel in three seconds.

Opus 5.5 produces code far better than 95% of professional devs, and it only stands to get “worse” from here on out.

Quite where this leaves any of the people in these information processing jobs is anyone’s guess.

Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @02:02PM (#50185067)
Bioware have not been very successful for a very long time.

Even in the good times their ability to create (and hide) black holes was prodigious.

A major strand in american conservatism is to believe, strongly, in laws being made as close to the people they apply to as possible. This is why there is such an undercurrent from that side of reducing the scope of the federal gov while allowing private entities to have their own rules on their areas.

The level to which German society proscribes behavior top down with the law simply wouldn’t be tolerated across the spectrum for the simple reason no one would agree what the rules should be, even if they share the European idea that everyone else should follow the rules they personally support.

Same function as the laws about when you can mow in Germany, simply at a sub municipal level.
Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Sunday October 18, 2026 @03:40PM (#50144611)
Honestly it aligns with ideas like the move to Swift. (And the monstrosity of Xcode replacing project builder).

Back when it was obj-c with cocoa the quality was night and day higher than it is today. Not too long ago I booted my G4 and was stunned by how responsive it is, which was extra surprising considering at the time it didn’t feel that way!

You can tell that generations of greybeards at infinite loop have been retiring. They got the hardware culture right only to see the nextstep legacy in software go to waste.

Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Sunday October 18, 2026 @01:45PM (#50143394)
Very true. People that manage to be nostalgic about system 8 or 9 mystify me.
Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Sunday October 18, 2026 @12:49PM (#50142792)
Yeah iOS is headed the same way.

I now get stuck in the camera app half the time I try to use it, and other nonsense.

Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Sunday October 18, 2026 @12:01PM (#50142241)
Given the comparable performance of OpenGL and Metal on the same hardware I was under the impression that is how Apple had been implementing OpenGL for quite a while.
Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Sunday October 18, 2026 @12:00PM (#50142228)
The general Apple software quality decline seems to be accelerating. We are in the thousand papercut stage where lots of small things just don’t work properly.

One of my Macs has developed the most insane habit of losing audio output capability, and then tries to route it to another one - a feature I didn’t even know existed.

Communication is a personal experience. TV is a shared experience.

Makes no sense to see TV as a medium for communication.

Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @11:49AM (#50007320)
MS has been particularly extreme for longer (decades, at least). Surely it is a statement of intent to others as well anyway.
If they were to do something positive with it then it would be nice.

Instead they are hell bent on criticizing and tearing down anyone that does, especially when their finance bros are invested in the legacy competition.

Disney have/had this amazing strategy diagram https://kottke.org/15/06/walt-disneys-corporate-strategy-cha...

The thing people fail to appreciate about media empires is there is no ad/not-ad distinction: it is all an ad, either for other products or for more of the same media.

Who they will paint as an asshole in order to get them ejected.

And it will be true because the only way to defeat these people is actually being an asshole.

> If you want to gatekeep or only create stuff to boost your own ego or portfolio, then AI might be an issue

One of the major cultural problems in open source software is it got dominated by people doing it purely for self promotion. Then it becomes an interview question, then all the incentives are warped on the promise of “get PRs merged, get paid big money”.

But yes, you are right.

You need to grasp that programmers dealt with this cope wave a year ago and know exactly how ideas like yours pan out.
