Re:In LLM era, can software startup survive? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:58AM (#50333871)
It's still usually cheaper to pay for software than it's to write it, maintain it and run it.
Re:Product Managers aren't safe either on Friday October 30, 2026 @05:14PM (#50310223)
I don't believe other jobs are going to be as impacted as software engineering. Software is unique in that regard that the results can be verified quickly and easily fixed. On the other hand nobody is going to try building a building only to check if it's structurally sound because that would be absurd.
Re:Building an AI-native engineering org on Friday October 30, 2026 @04:23PM (#50309638)
That's why I'm sceptical about the value of ai in software development. Much more can now be done but I don't see costumers paying more for it. The only way it can work is by laying off software engineers and saving money on their salaries.
Another thing to pay attention to is the margins of hardware companies like nvidia or micron. Hyperscalers are spending huge amount of money but the money mostly goes to the profits of hardware companies.
Re:Manufacturing the Great Replacement on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:24AM (#50288655)
The ethnic composition of countries in Europe is definitely changing do I can't see how this can be "manufactured".
Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @05:31AM (#50286464)
The current way too write software is too just ask the ai do it. StackOverflow will be soon mostly irrelevant completely.
Re:Alphabet Announces Third Quarter 2026 Results [pdf] on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:05PM (#50280883)
There's no guarantee it'll generate big enough returns and it's probably at jacked up prices.
Re:Particle-1 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @04:58PM (#50280809)
A terrible slopped website. They could have put a bit more effort into an actual design.
Re:Tell HN: I'm going on strike this November on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @09:41AM (#50273397)
Three years ago the ai struggled to write a single function correctly.
it's for people who live in countries with capital controls and don't have access to normal securities accounts
Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:37AM (#50259115)
They have huge margins and can absorb price increases of some of the components.
Re:I will no longer upload to NEW on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:05AM (#50257298)
There's no point volunteering free time just to deal with slop.
Re:I still teach OpenGL ES 3.0 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @06:47AM (#50257140)
These low level details have become unimportant since the ai can generate and debug them well imo.
Re:I Don't Understand Quantum Physics (2018) on Saturday October 24, 2026 @07:32AM (#50220273)
it doesn't if you assume superdeterminism
Re:Upcoming Critical PHP Security Release on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @07:47AM (#50179306)
it doesn't have to be done all at once
Re:Upcoming Critical PHP Security Release on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @07:36AM (#50179187)
the php team should consider leveraging ai to rewrite the interpreter in rust like bun did recently
Re:Does Ruby on Rails still make sense? on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @07:33AM (#50179159)
even dhh basically admitted that it was obsolete recently
Re:Everything is going wrong for Muhammad bin Salman on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @06:21AM (#50163905)
The immigrants were let in Europe because politicians wanted to let them in.
Re:Everything is going wrong for Muhammad bin Salman on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @06:07AM (#50163756)
These investments can be easily taxed or regulated so they don't generate any real profit once the oil countries are irrelevant.
How bad the other options are so that people are compelled to vote for them?
Re:How employment is changing at Anthropic on Sunday October 18, 2026 @08:01AM (#50140323)
A counterexample that I can think of is agriculture. In the past almost everybody worked in it, now there are barely any farmers (relative to the overall population) producing much more food than before.
Re:How employment is changing at Anthropic on Sunday October 18, 2026 @07:38AM (#50140151)
I think you're right in your comparison and that's way we'll soon see mass layoffs of software engineers. Software can now be produced with less people than before but I don't think there's market for more software.
do people really write '--' if they want to write an em dash or has the comment been just generated by an ai?
Re:Last rites for Gentoo's Chromium package on Friday October 16, 2026 @06:04AM (#50116457)
ai can work test the options and fix the builds
Re:Last rites for Gentoo's Chromium package on Friday October 16, 2026 @03:55AM (#50115453)
why don't they leverage ai for maintaining packages?
Re:AI was great until it was not on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:24AM (#50101652)
The purpose of a university is to provide a paper stating that one has completed it. If llms can do something decently, it is a waste of time to learn it properly.
Re:Linus Torvalds's first LLM-assisted patch series on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:48PM (#50091824)
He could have at least written the commit messages himself. That llm yapping is annoying to read.
Re:Tanstack Start 1.0 is stable on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:11AM (#50085141)
I don't know if it is just me but it seems like a waste of time basically? Frontend code is almost always generated nowadays. Nobody is going to care about the framework details.
Re:Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court on Friday October 09, 2026 @01:14PM (#50023634)
These "independent" organizations are usually just cliques without any kind of democratic oversight. Trump at least was elected.
Money comes from debt. Debt is essentially the way to print money.
