Fair enough, I think, maybe I was uncharitable. Seems kind of bog standard pdooming, abstract and undirected towards political action. Maybe my objection is that the whole "chaos/order" thing isn't based on any sort of analysis, or maybe the evaluation here is a little breathless. I guess if it's just a complaint or rant, that's cool, but like the first poster, this reads a little "Guy with a sandwich board on the corner" for me.
What´s the substance? Seems like we see these minor differences in the enthusiasms of comfortable people pop up here every week
Agreed on that last point. The enthusiasts in my department rarely have an answer when I point to my 8gb Mac and say "how the hell am I running anything on-device" because they're consumed with the question of "ethical use."
Does SA really care about people running local models, though. I think he cares about all the rooms in institutional or enterprise settings that run those tiny, ancient square PCs from HP or Dell (medical intake, classrooms, admin assistants/clerks) that would look at the difference between replacing each PC in this "supply-constrained environment" - what's getting at me is the idea of what something like a "hybrid environment" would look like for funding-strapped orgs who are facing a refresh schedule.
The "it makes no sense" rhetoric has been around for a couple of years now, I guess the, uh, charm offensive is about substantiating valuation or something. But in a way this is the most good-faith argument I've heard from this dolt (SA, not you). In a lot of ways we've obscured the computer per se from the people who depend on it in the org, they might as well be using a thin client for all they know or care about the box itself.
"Businessmen make stupid decisions" is an interesting opening gambit
Most roadways in the US are lined with wooden poles supporting wires with electricity running through them
oh they'll assist breaking all right
Love how bloggers are convinced someone needs to copy the APA citation to their boomerposting
"Thank god the causes told me about the effects!"
Enjoyed the presentation, at least, but maybe I'm left feeling a little naive about the use of "paper" in the pitch. Not so much a metaphor as not actually a paper notebook
Prob. best to just find a Dutch PhD supervisor though
Seem to be a number of works available on the topic, correct? Is the question specifically "what happened to the master's disputation?" Probably the 20th c. practice of accumulating defenses for several theses and having that count as your credential was replaced by the PhD as an early-career credential for European researchers instead of a "they only find it next to you when you die" type of summative work.
Is your girlfriend secondary or primary, if you don't mind? Our secondary programs in the region have a lot of AI vendor and software money flowing into them yet like you I see them (the teachers, not the AI) crafting lesson plans and assorted work with free institutional accounts for these products or personal ones. The vendors seem focused on student acts; for the teachers, there's a lot of "say your lecture into this tool and it will provide feedback on your performance" type of thing, which seems specialized.
The tilde thing remains uniquely obnoxious in a field that seems want to mangle language for fun, so that's innovative I guess
Can’t believe Cabinet is still around. Issue 8’s “bang the keys swiftly” (2002) is still one of my favorite articles re: media history
Boy I have not seen Scalzi's bluesky but I gotta imagine there's a minion named Hugh getting a nasty splinter in a Starter Villain sequel
As a style, slop is starting to settle into an aesthetic effect that's hard to find a word for, but "twee" is getting close. Anyway I can't read more than a paragraph of this crap before bailing now, it's like an allergic reaction
This is an ad, also.
Was sad to hear about the fate of WMHD. Growing up in the US around that time college radio and left-of-the-dial stations were the only places you'd get introduced to different stuff.
Always try to find time for the Evan Davies show
"Thankfully I can crib from John Christy's work, reproduced here out of context and without attribution"
>is rather stigmatising
Oh you went with the "rather" instead of the "quite" that's interesting. Anyway if vegans want to say "I am vegan" you'd profit from taking just a second to ask yourself why you get reflexively pissy about it.
Yes, people in the US definitely have trouble with virtue.
"Instead of a lemonade stand, parents should have their children try to make pastries, which is more amenable to an early-career pastry empire" is one of the more stupid propositions in here (and there's competition), but my favorite part is this:
_Unlike textbooks or professors, the creators of these educational materials are willing to engage with random students throughout the world, provide feedback, and even arrange meetups—often for free._
Oh I'm certain they are. That's why educators and staff in the United States get fingerprinted and submit background checks.
nvm author explains in the comment directly below this one, lol
"It’s not that the engineers are getting slower: it’s that every new button has to coexist with all the previous buttons."
I thought it might be intentional though? The first half reads very non-slop, and it just kind of inches its way in as the situation falls apart
>This is so shockingly naive I feel I’m being trolled
I'd take the under on "getting the joke" in this thread, imho, if people start piling in
