ghshepard, true. The article focused on seawalls and surges, but still managed to get the damage correct: 600,000 residents effected, $100 Billion in damage, 145 mph winds. Regardless, knowing the effects of the storm -shown through the simulation - there could have been a plan for the ensuing catastrophe, e.g. evacuating the city, relief efforts; which seem ad hoc.
Re:Why we should learn German on Friday July 28, 2017 @12:40AM (#14872013)
There is a deep fallacy in his argument. The academic learning of a language teaches almost nothing. The true challenge is not foreign vocabulary it is the reluctance to engage another culture, which is the prerequisite to learning any language. The author does not make this distinction possibly because he was stationed in a German-speaking country and assumes each language learner can mimic his learning process without his experience.

Often, one won't even attempt to learn a language unless you appreciate - or at least think you appreciate - the culture.

Re:Show HN: Listen to London's live music scene on Monday July 07, 2014 @07:59PM (#8002302)
No music for me.

Are concerts on the ipod graphic available for play (I can't get the concerts to play). I just get a Soundcloud icon to pop up but no sound.

Briefly explain the requirements to play the music (e.g. do I need to download Google Play if I'm on a laptop?)

Color choice is a great addition.

Actually you could make it to where people write and it looks like a letter. I think it is a worth while venture. I would just make a page that simulated a typewriter.

And give the option to delete a page you created. I know it will take MySQL coding but I think it is also worth the effort.

Add the basic tweet, email, send, ...

The Adventures of Sayf Ben Dhi Yazan - ancient Syrian mystical tale of a man on a mission to capture a magical book. Many parallels to the Legend of Zelda. The poetic form isn't preserved in the English translation.

Great Museum Homes of the Western United States - The great houses of the Western US, who built them, how the owners got their fortune, details into their businesses, etc

It would help to have an example of what the subscription provides.

Customized Cookbook

=], I have a cookie/muffin recipe generator. Instead on a cookbook with limited recipes, the generator can be customized (produces recipes based on a user's preferences).

Baked Goods are grouped by type (e.g. chocolate chip cookie). The generator generates a unique recipe each time you click on a type of cookie/muffin.

Ask HN: Where to get UX Design/usability advice?

Hello guys, I need advice for my website to make it simplier to use. The site is basically a form and users do not know that they have to choose all the pull up menus. Does anyone have experience with this? And the users are not reading things so text doesn't help.

How many creators actually become rich? I thought the marketers of innovations are the ones who become rich. To but people back on earth you could show how many great creators end up with nothing after years and provide practical solutions to combat this.

Charles Goodyear, Eli Whitney, and Robert Kearns come to mind as people who never profited off their creations or suffered greatly trying to receive just compensation.

ASK HN: Sign of the Digital Times, Good or Bad?

According to a Best of New Orleans source, the editorial staff (at the New Orleans Times Picayune) will be cut by at least a third, "top brass will be fired and reporters who remain aboard will take sharp salary cuts and be expected to start blogging through the day."It almost sounds like it came out of the Onion.
