Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:16PM (#50346740)
This is why Ubuntu also has Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernels[1], which are fully supported on LTS releases. The current Ubuntu 24.04 HWE kernel is 7.0.

Everyone would be very difficult. You'd still need some people to make sure essential services are still functioning, and that still involves quite a large number of people.
There are reasons to remain on Google Android for now, though. For example, QuickShare compatibility with AirDrop[1,2], or compatibility with certain banking apps[3].

There is also proposal D right at the bottom, which is "Accept AI contributions for Debian specific work".

Interesting to see the per-country rates[1]. France is up to 85%, apparently!

Re:IPv6 Traffic Crosses the 50% Mark for the First Time on Friday April 17, 2026 @12:14AM (#47802396)
Another reference is Cloudflare's metrics, which show IPv6 at more like 40%, excluding bot traffic.

Re:Intel Announces Arc Pro B70 and Arc Pro B65 GPUs on Friday March 27, 2026 @09:10AM (#47542256)
At the end of the 2nd paragraph:

> Intel will provide certified drivers for Windows 11, Windows 10, and Linux.

Windows 11, OK. Linux, OK. But why Windows 10 for a new product?!

It doesn't look likely that there will ever be an iOS app[1], unless Apple makes key changes in the way iOS works[2].

Re:Can I start using Wayland in 2026? on Sunday January 04, 2026 @07:18PM (#46493851)
Yes, it now works in Zoom, but not in Webex, unfortunately. That's been a big obstacle for me. I'd need to be able to share individual windows with audio.
Re:Ubuntu 26.04 LTS – The Roadmap on Sunday December 28, 2025 @08:43AM (#46411042)
A key difference is support lifespan, though: 5 years of standard security maintenance for regular Ubuntu[1], and 3 years for Kubuntu[2].

Re:I spent a week without IPv4 (2023) on Sunday December 21, 2025 @01:19AM (#46342706)
If ISPs tried that, everyone would just go back to using NAT, even for IPv6.
Re:VPN location claims don't match real traffic exits on Saturday December 13, 2025 @11:02PM (#46260648)
There was an article on HN not too long ago about how to get a North Korea / Antarctica VPS[1], so this isn't entirely surprising!

Re:Auto Dark Mode for Windows on Sunday October 26, 2025 @04:09AM (#45709954)
A very similar function was just added to Microsoft PowerToys 0.95 recently, called Light Switch[1]. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but basically does the same task, including switching modes automatically based on sunrise and sunset times.

Looks like MacOS and iOS only, which is unfortunate. Support for at least Windows and Android is needed for wider adoption. Linux would also be nice.
There's a good BBC emulator in your browser here, for those who want to play:

Obviously, such mistakes have no bearing on the content of the report. However, there are usually certain expectations of a formal report from an official government bureau, including a standard of presentation.

Re:Briar: Peer to Peer Encrypted Messaging on Friday March 14, 2025 @07:20PM (#43368358)
The problem is the networking effect. Since so many people use iOS, even Android users often have to contact people on iOS devices, resulting in Briar likely remaining very niche.
Re:Briar: Peer to Peer Encrypted Messaging on Friday March 14, 2025 @07:10PM (#43368290)
Indeed, this is very much a limitation for all apps on iOS that don't want to rely on centralised services, such as a push notification server other than Apple's.

Re:Briar: Peer to Peer Encrypted Messaging on Friday March 14, 2025 @07:06PM (#43368263)
Unfortunately, iOS simply does not allow apps like Briar to run reliably in the background[1]. Unless Apple changes its thinking about iOS, Briar or other similar apps would never work reliably.

SyncThing[1] works very well for syncing with Android devices, but IIRC doesn't work with iOS.

Re:Stats – macOS system monitor in your menu bar on Thursday January 30, 2025 @10:49PM (#42884549)
If you're using Gnome, you could try the system-monitor-next extension[1]. The main thing to note when installing for the first time is that you'll also need to install a few system packages[2].

[1] https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/3010/system-monitor-n...

[2] https://github.com/mgalgs/gnome-shell-system-monitor-next-ap...

It looks like it also works on Windows (64-bit or 32-bit).
