Re:Whistle: Speech to Text in 16.9 MB on Thursday October 08, 2026 @10:31PM (#50015263)
Does the AI processing work fast or consume less resources on 4-5 years old laptops with 8GB RAM?

Firefox/Zen is best
Re:Anyone miss a flip phone with buttons? Anyone? on Thursday September 10, 2026 @06:28AM (#49641335)
I miss the phones with physical QWERTY keypad buttons.
Re:Ask HN: Alternative to Proton Mail? on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @10:09AM (#49536514)
There's Kagi Mail.
.gl works for me.
How about using a dedicated paper notebook to log everything that comes to your mind related to this illness?

And also, if the illness is somehow related to food/habits, more or less, then that could also be tracked - like what you're eating and how your body responded afterwards (I mean, within, let's say, 24 hours).

I'm sorry, noob here. I have a special book that I bought which I can open only inside the Kindle app (Windows/mobile). I have been meaning to screenshot the pages and convert them into a document/PDF. What do I have to do to make it fast? Just upload all the screenshots one by one and tell Mistral "Chat" to OCR them?

Re:Ask HN: What browser do you use? on Thursday August 13, 2026 @11:19PM (#49294428)
Zen browser - based on Firefox.

Brave browser - when things don't work on Zen/Firefox.

$20 for Claude on my personal email - fully reimbursed by my company.

Personal use is much greater than use for company purposes.

Entire public Meta suite of products are cancer to the society.
Re:France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @07:18AM (#49256411)
As soon as I realise it's a spam call, I just put myself on mute and let the spammer blabber himself/herself. They get frustrated and never call me again.
Re:Timed YouTube video transcripts in .txt and .pdf on Sunday July 26, 2026 @04:09AM (#49055834)
Is there a simple tool to download YouTube transcripts with speaker identification?

And how much water?
Re:Ask HN: What would you do with a trillion dollars on Sunday June 14, 2026 @02:21AM (#48524687)
Plant fuckingmore trees. As many as one can imagine and then some more.
Re:Ask HN: For non-hackers/nerds, why do you read HN? on Saturday June 06, 2026 @11:23PM (#48431468)
It satisfies my intellectual curiosity.

Plis, I can't stand low-value/unproductive discussions/trash talk that is omnipresent elsewhere.

Re:Ask HN: How did you discover Hacker News? on Saturday June 06, 2026 @11:21PM (#48431454)
I don't remember but probably it was StumbleUpon. Around 2012.
Step 1: Stop using Google. You can try Kagi for web search.

Ask HN: Learning path for aspiring software developer (my nephew)

This isn't for me but for my nephew. He is going to start his undergraduate studies in a few months, and I would like to suggest some to-dos, some not-to-dos, things to avoid, etc. With information at one's fingertips, I don't want him to watch a random YouTube video and fall down the rabbit hole of "trendy" things. For now, the only advice I gave him was to NOT use AI to write programs. Think on...

Re:Ask HN: Chrome, Brave, Firefox or Something Else? on Sunday April 26, 2026 @11:15AM (#47910996)
Zen browser - based on Firefox
I skip if I realise or come to know it's an AI-generated text or image. Especially images.
Re:Ask HN: Any Interesting Niche Hobbies? on Wednesday April 08, 2026 @07:35AM (#47688771)

Re:Ask HN: How do you handle clients who don't pay on time? on Saturday April 04, 2026 @10:43AM (#47639487)
Jack up your price and offer a 5% discount if they you in full upfront before starting the work.
What do you think of the Indian IT companies? Will they survive the AI onslaught? Where do you see them in the next five years?
Re:Claude Sonnet 4.6 on Wednesday February 18, 2026 @02:19AM (#47058225)
Perhaps AI wrote the announcement.
This is very smart. Thank you for sharing this.

I am not a developer. Could you explain the process in a bit more detail? I want to build the same command. I only have the $20 subscription for Claude. Do I need to create a project and create a learning profile.md file and feed what I already know? And then what do I do?

Sorry if that's too many questions.

Non-tech guy here. How much RAM & CPU will it consume? I have 2 laptops - one with Windows 11 and another with Linux Mint.

Can it run on these two OS? How to install it in a simple way?

Upwork
Plant trees.
Re:Ask HN: Cheap laptop for Linux without GUI (for writing) on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @09:32AM (#46886241)
Either a typewriter or a paper notebook
I am on Android. Could you make the app on this platform too?

How about a webapp that runs in desktop/mobile browser?

Does the AI store & train on my voice?
