Same with firefox on debian. I sure hope this article is good after I put so much work into enabling it.
Re:Chelsea Manning released from prison on Thursday May 18, 2017 @09:39AM (#14367068)
Her punishment was illegal under the 8th amendment, and her "crime" was protected whistleblowing.
Re:They Used To Last 50 Years on Monday March 20, 2017 @07:31AM (#13913222)
When I went to the first semester of engineering school at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, there was a class called Engineering Professional Development 160: Introduction to Engineering.

One of the early class sessions was a lecture from a guy at a power tool company, making some kind of jigsaw or handheld cutting tool.

He explicitly told us, paraphrasing, "You don't want to make your product too reliable, because people won't buy more of them, and you won't make as much money". I was horrified, literally looked around at my classmates to see how horrified they would be, none of them were. I ended up majoring in philosophy.

Of course this site is dedicated to the idea he expressed, so I am not looking for agreement here, just relaying what I consider an interesting historical fact.

I think they misspelled Ang Cui's name in this article.
If Mark Zuckerberg were held responsible for snippets of casual conversations had amongst peers behind closed doors and as a very young adult...best case scenario he'd be flipping burgers, worst case he'd be behind bars.
Yeah common Scandinavian name, same as Thor, essentially.
Re:The brain is not a computer on Thursday May 19, 2016 @09:13AM (#11729881)
A better title: Your Brain is Not an IBM-Compatible PC with 64k of RAM
Uh yeah, the US had tests. They were there to prevent black people from voting.
Re:Letter of Recommendation: Sleep, ‘Dopesmoker’ on Monday January 25, 2016 @09:56AM (#10967461)
If you like Sleep's Dopesmoker, the next logical step is Conference of the Birds, by OM.
Re:Persistent IRC Considered Harmful on Monday December 21, 2015 @11:45AM (#10771942)
You can see how long someone has been away from their irc session with: /whois username
The scare quotes are not in the article title.
Re:“Houston, We've Had a Problem” (1975) on Saturday June 06, 2015 @10:20AM (#9670885)
Unless they cared about preserving the state of the moon for future scientists without leaving human corpses lying around.
Is it just me or does it seem like the video was altered to make the motion smoother? Maybe it's just a very jittery robot.
This isn't a justification, but I've had to use the virtual floppy drive as recently as this year, to install drivers on proprietary OSes under virtualization.
Re:Evidence for nuclear explosions on Mars [pdf] on Wednesday March 18, 2015 @03:50PM (#9228195)
I've never so strongly wanted to simultaneously up-vote and down-vote a comment.
Re:Reliability Data Set for 41,000 Hard Drives Now Open Source on Wednesday February 04, 2015 @01:15PM (#8998500)
They explicitly forbid "selling" the data, so it's not open source in any usual sense of the phrase.
Re:First NetHack bot ascension on Tuesday February 03, 2015 @03:27PM (#8993104)
It's worth pointing out that no one ever finishes (ascends) a game of Nethack without looking at the spoilers, so they're really not spoilers, they're more like the instruction manual.

It is definitely more fun to try playing the game for several hours without reading the spoilers, but you're not going to figure out stuff like the Invocation Ritual without reading the spoilers.

Re:Ross: Attorney built on top of IBM's Watson on Thursday January 29, 2015 @11:31AM (#8967100)
This joke was almost perfect, but the wording hides the punchline.
Or maybe didn't read any Poe.
In the deeply twisted world of lawyers, anyone not wearing business clothes isn't a real person.
Or maybe it suggests that the technology is only useful if it can be used for the illegal gathering of evidence.
Nice argument from italics.
Re:Italy: High Court shoots down Windows tax on Friday September 12, 2014 @11:43AM (#8308645)
They should obviously be obliged to make it possible. It's sad that Apple isn't treated as harshly as Microsoft by the internet community and regulators.

Both deserve to be criticized for the same unethical practices. Android phone manufacturers may be the worst offenders of all.

Re:Wikipedia refuses to delete photo taken by monkey on Wednesday August 06, 2014 @11:55AM (#8143117)
"as it is jeopardising his livelihood" -- So if a monkey hadn't taken a selfie, he'd be starving and homeless.
Re:Interview with Steve Klabnik on Friday July 25, 2014 @04:24PM (#8087446)
I wish you had made a stronger distinction between freedom and zero-price.
Re:IPFS: The Permanent Web on Tuesday July 22, 2014 @03:43PM (#8071166)
Copyright-based businesses in the US are going to love your philosophical take on censorship.
Re:Breaking Spotify DRM with PANDA on Friday July 04, 2014 @03:25PM (#7989954)
Spotify is not the one reasonable way of paying for music.

Purchasing drm-free downloads, physical CDs, cassettes, and vinyl are the reasonable ways.

That's a different rationale, though. This trademark is being thrown out specifically because it is considered defamatory.
Re:Teen Arrested for 30+ Swattings, Bomb Threats on Monday May 12, 2014 @11:14AM (#7733174)
There is zero discussion of accountability for the cops in any of these situations. If they are so easily tricked, they need to either scale back the militarized force they are allowing to be abused, or become more skeptical about these threats.
