Ask HN: Windows search replacement?

I'm looking for an alternative to the Windows native search (folder and files, not apps).I want to be able to choose where to search (folder, disk) and have the options to filter (like wildcards, filetype and anything else I can get) and order the results.Any suggestions?

Re:TechEmpower Round 13 Preliminary Results on Friday August 19, 2016 @06:35PM (#12324012)
Once again the benchmarks are using outdated versions of frameworks (at least the languages I checked, like 2 or more years old).
Or maybe they are putting all that telemetry to "good" use.
Am I crazy or is Microsoft announcing new open source or dev friendly stuff everytime there's a PR bomb here on HN?

18/08/2016 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12305598 With Windows 10, Microsoft Disregards User Choice and Privacy (eff.org)

A day later they announce Power Shell is open source.

I remember a few months ago they blasted HN's frontpage with news after a few discussions about telemetry and EEE (first wave of Windows 10/UWP showing its true colors).

I don't care enough to do a reddit-esque investigation on HN stories. I just find it funny, that's all.

What do you mean? You can create a new Spotify account with your e-mail.

But I already gave up on Spotify since the web player is buggy and full of memory leaks. But I'm sure their apps are fine.

IMO it does not matter what other people are doing. I'm paying for this software so I want control (over my own hardware). Mobile is a lost cause but I literally can't afford to fight my desktop OS. It must work and be reliable.

Maybe I would accept forced security updates if they allowed live updates. Having to restart your computer is awful.

But that's not even the worse problem. It reset settings, install things you removed, services you don't want, remove features you had before for no reason. Not to mention drivers and all the update problems people are reporting. If there's a chance to break, I must be able to choose when I want to upgrade.

I'm willing to pay more for not having to worry about telemetry, MS account and all that bs.

Personally, I can't stand OSX.

Since running things on Wine or VM end it up being too much of a hassle, Windows is my only option. I did that for a couple of years though.

I think requiring the user to boot a Linux live CD and do some voodoo would be enough. Computer would have to self destruct if you failed the steps tho.

"Do not turn off your computer, 5, 4.."

No shit. I was just trying to avoid the year of the linux desktop meme, since I gave up on that already, while also doubting that "they" are going to ditch Windows.
Let's be real, "they" won't. A select few might change to a mac, maybe a chromebook, and that's it.

Developers are a case apart.

What you're going to do when a telemetry patch comes bundled with a security one? MS just announced they are doing updates in bulk for 7 and 8.1.
I wouldn't mind paying twice the price of Windows 10 Pro if I could select what I want installed and the OS respected that. No telemetry, no Cortana, no Windows Stores apps if I need to have a MS account. No missclick-based features (you click yes and suddenly your local account is now an online account).

Since I'm stuck with this crap forever (Adobe, Office, games, etc) at least let me pay you not spy on me and install your crapware. And let ME control MY PC.

Thank you but I'm looking for builds from an official and secure source. At the moment I just don't know how to grab the latest stable Windows 64 binaries.

The tool you linked points to "http://chromium.woolyss.com/" who is also showing the build I mentioned (386251 51.0.2704.84) but it's not available on Google's official storage.

And I know about https://download-chromium.appspot.com/?platform=Win&type=con...

But there's no Win64 and even the latest 32 bits stable release is not there yet ("Updated 2 months ago"). I don't want bleeding edge.

Ask HN: Chromium for Windows (64) from an official and secure source

I went to https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/index.html and searched for the last stable release on https://omahaproxy.appspot.com/viewer (386251 => win64/stable/51.0.2704.84) but the [386251] folder doesn't exist.https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/index.html?prefix=Win_x64/386251/Am I doing something wrong? Also, is Chromium...

About full disk encryption for Windows: what is the safest bet here? I mean, what if a single sector of my disk gets corrupted, will I lose my entire data because of that? What kind of encryption is less prone to data corruption?

I'm worried about this. And how about .tar.gpg backups, if I lose a single byte I lose the entire file?

A few years back I anonymously reported a huge data leak. Weeks later they asked for my name and address so they could "send me a gift".

To this day they still haven't fixed the leak. And I took a pass on that "gift".

I did, they said I have a slightly deviated septum, but that's common for most people and there's no need for surgery. And that I shouldn't even feel anything.

I also checked my lungs and everything was fine.

It might be related to a mental disorder or something. I have anxiety and maybe other stuff that I never bothered to fix.

Unrelated but I also gave up on fixing my problem: For the past ~8 years I have a constant feeling that one of my nostrils is almost closed and hard to breath. I went to several doctors, did all kinds of exams and they found nothing.

I feel like I need to blow my nose all the time and it drives me crazy sometimes. It gets worse when I have a flu. Sometimes it even bleeds a little, like it's irritated.

My family thinks I'm crazy so I stopped mentioning a long time ago, and one of the doctors even laughed at me.

No, and I don't want to make another company just for this. I might abandon this whole idea if that's necessary.

Ask HN: Can I keep my information private while publishing an Android app?

If I make a simple Android app (Google Play store), will I be able to keep my information private? Even when somebody make an in app purchase. Like using a fictional company name (I never registered one) so nobody knows it's me. Only Google would have my real name and everything else. There's no nefarious reason. I'm just your usual paranoid pc enthusiast who doesn't like his name and entire...

where can I read more about this? I enjoy good programming drama

It's actually faster. My company was able to cut a lot of servers just by upgrading. And you can find a lot of testimonials around reddit and twitter. Best thing to do is not to trust me, or this horrendous benchmark suite, and test it yourself.

That's why I loathe TechEmpower's benchmark, or any similar service trying to benchmark the world. It's very misleading and error prone by nature. It's not like you're comparing two GPU cards doing the same thing.

Take PHP for example, one of the most popular frameworks is using version 4.2 (latest is 5.2, and there's also a LTS release). It was released in June, 2014 and it's before several major architecture changes and refactoring. And they'll probably say it's my fault for not contributing.

So you can link your Github profile to recruiters and add "Creator of project X" in your CV.

I hate the amount of garbage and noise created by this. But how many of the good tools we have today wouldn't have existed if people didn't just started coding?

It's full circle to your first phrase since if nobody was using nobody would write redundant/worse tools. Man I miss the time programming was only my hobby.

FB released a product called Signal http://media.fb.com/2015/09/17/introducing-signal/

If you do a Google search that's the first result. Would be funny if they were afraid enough to do a SEO 'attack'. Yeah, tinfoil.

nice!

Ask HN: Macbook average lifespan?

I need an old macbook for doing some tests and also allow my son to learn a little about development (I want to give him a slower machine on purpose). If I replace the HDD for a SSD and the battery, do you think a model from 2008/2009 (A1181 IIRC) can still last a few more years? Like, what's the average life span of such beasts?I might install Linux on it!
