Tell HN: A 30-something CS undergrad struggling with life

Born into a dysfunctional family (father beat the sht out of my mother, me, siblings). My mother in turn beat the sht out of me & my siblings. I had trouble in elementary school. Had to repeat classes, graduated from high school late in life. Worked mostly in temporary low-paying jobs, then went to school for 3 years doing basically nothing. Dropped out, then worked again somewhere, then...

That's not really a good reason to neglect statistics and probabilities/studies/findings. If you know that crossing a highway will make it likely for you to get killed, then you better not cross that highway. If you know that smoking is detrimental to your health, you better not smoke etc. I am sorry that your mother died, but you should not justify being reckless with your life with the death of a loved one. I know it is hard to think rationally when emotion is involved, but the point is statistics/studies etc. give you good directions for your life:

https://www.inc.com/dana-severson/after-studying-lives-of-72...

A study/finding is not meant to be absolute/100%, it is just "good advice" for you to follow that will most likely help to keep good health. So don't neglect a finding/study just b/c a small percentage had "bad luck".

Ask HN: Are there any HN-like communities for programming discussions?

I don't like Stack Overflow, but I need an alternative to it. HN is where I genuinely feel safe and happy! Is there anything programming related that resembles the HN community? So with "HN-like" I mean: with the HN community guidelines enforced. Also, it should be friendly and welcoming like HN.I know I am getting annoying, but I am really desperate in this matter. I really need a community...

I am rehashing this I know, but:

We really need to HNify the Internet.

Not sure if possible, but a neural network based filter for browsers that enforces HN guidelines on your Google/YouTube searches, Amazon visits etc. The filter may be called "Dang Filter".

Or we just need to create our own communities with HN guidelines. Making replacements for Stack Overflow, YouTube etc.

I really wish the Internet would be like HN.

Oh, nice! Well to me, it is also going to be "just another night". Though it freaked me out at first, but then I saw your post and thought well, you're not the only one who will have an unspectacular New's Year Eve. Which is oddly comforting.
Re:Happy New Year, HN! on Thursday December 31, 2020 @12:23PM (#25594686)
I am wondering how other HNers are doing right now? Are you all good and ready for 2021? If you already in 2021: Happy New Year! One thing for sure: My New Year's Eve with an imposed lockdown would be quite boring without HN.
Re:Thank HN: All of you, this place, gives me hope on Thursday December 31, 2020 @05:05AM (#25591291)
I wish the whole Internet would become an HN. Imagine an HN-esque YouTube (no click-bait and other BS). Imagine an HN-like Stack Overflow (no toxicity and with its own charm and friendliness). Imagine an HN-esque news outlet instead of the inflationary headline "breaking news". Imagine an HN-style Amazon with sensible and trustworthy reviews.

We need the Dangs everywhere. Dangs help us to stay sane in this gigantic information age. I am happy that this place exists. :)

Re:Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2021? on Thursday December 31, 2020 @04:20AM (#25591032)
Maybe: - Speaking another language than English. Language is a key to access a culture. - Being more or less aware of your neurological (isolation, attention, sleep, meditation, n-back) and evolutionary needs (fasting, exercise) to infer consequences for your own health. Tangentially related: how to read studies as a layperson to ultimately make decisions for yourself & your health? - Mastering/recapitulation of fundamentals of your craft (to stay sharp): "Study microeconomics, game theory, psychology, persuasion, ethics, mathematics, and computers." - Investing & microeconomics - Creativity: "Specific knowledge is often highly technical or creative. It cannot be outsourced or automated." - Being aware of non-conventional (and preferably non-exploitative) money making opportunities: "The Internet has massively broadened the possible space of careers. Most people haven't figured this out yet." - How to operate a search engine effectively (how to come up with the right keywords to get what you're exactly looking for) - Self discipline in a highly distractible atmosphere - Emotional self-management - Organizing: PARA system, Johnny File System, Obsidian

Ask HN: Are we living in “Amerika”? And is globalism sustainable?

It seems like much of the world has become Americanized either way. As if Rammstein's song "Amerika" got its way. Companies adopting anglicisms ad infinitum instead of using native counterparts. Sometimes it gets so odd, that people start mixing English and their native language and speak in "Naglish" (I made that one up). You also see the soft power influence that America has in non-American...

Re:Ask HN: Is there a note taking app you're 100% happy with? on Monday December 28, 2020 @04:07PM (#25563225)
Oh someone mentioned Obsidian way earlier than me?

Nice!

IMHO: Using Obsidian with the PARA system and the Johnny File System makes a lot of things neat. :) You can use the JFS also for your files and folders.

Re:Ask HN: Is there a note taking app you're 100% happy with? on Monday December 28, 2020 @04:00PM (#25563159)
How about Obsidian?

I combine Obsidian with PARA and the Johnny File System. Both are methodologies to organize notes and files & folders.

Knowledge graphs are cool. :)

Edit: Oh sorry my bad, you were looking for smartphone apps, weren't you?

Re:Ask HN: Automation is going to affect our jobs soon, right? on Saturday December 26, 2020 @07:57PM (#25547817)
"One needs to have solid fundamentals and one needs to be proficient in ephemeral tools. It's tedious."

Thank you too for your insightful answer! Yep, OpenGL is quite a good example for an "ephermal" API. Now, I saw people either switch to DirectX 11 or they go the Vulkan/DirectX 12 route where it takes ages to render a simple triangle... However, I would still argue that knowing how to implement fundamental rendering algorithms yourself (rasterization or ray tracing) gives you deep insight and hence more power to manipulate things (since you know how it all works under the hood). But to be "production ready"/"job market relevant" you need to learn these "ephermal" tools (APIs, frameworks etc.). At this point I wonder who could render a simple triangle faster. Someone who knows only Vulkan/DirectX 12 or someone who knows the necessary algorithms and the math? What if someone knows both? I don't know, but at the end of the day a little insight on how stuff works under the hood won't hurt you at all.

BTW: The things that prompted me to think this way (i.e. "automation will cause less and less demand for programmers") were HN posts like these:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25540583 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25540059

"https://www.appgyver.com/ - The world's first professional no-code platform, enabling you to build apps for all form factors, including mobile, desktop, browser, TV and others."

Good point!

So my strategy with the fundamentals are a dead end in other words. I would therefore rephrase your last sentence to:

"Stagnate on old methods, die on old methods."

My focus on fundamentals was really not productive. The people that I referred to as "naysayers" were right. I was wasting my time learning about fundamentals and stuff aka reinventing the wheel to understand why something works.

Hmmm... I need to reflect on my old perceptions and views now and error correct or rather "bugfix" my brain.

Thank you too! :)

Edit: to clarify what my goal was in all this: Basically, if you understand or rather know something deeply you have "power" (as knowledge will give you power). But again this way of thinking seems to be deeply flawed and employers don't appreciate it apparently.

Thank you a thousand times for your valuable input. :) This shows me, that my "intuition" or rather "internal operating system" is flawed and needs to be recalibrated. Yeah, then maybe the naysayers were kind of right telling me that I am wasting my time doing fundamentals. However, I really actually enjoy it learning what is going on behind the scenes. Even if it doesn't make me "valuable" in the job market. I should perhaps do what everyone else does: investing, learning front end and APIs (or whatever is required in the market RN). But your last sentence also resonated with me:

"The actual way to prepare would be as always: maximize your salary and save as much as possible."

That's for having a "psychological leverage/advantage" I guess. If you are not having money issues you will likely get rid of the "draining background processes" in your head and focus on more productive things. So in other words FU money is always good. :)

Ask HN: Automation is going to affect our jobs soon, right?

So what strategies do you think are going to keep you relevant in the future?Things like "no-code development platform" or NCDP will perhaps lessen the demand of web developers. Unreal Engine and Unity have maybe lessened the demand for game engine and graphics programmers. It might be wrong to extrapolate out of these 2 trends, but it looks like more and more software developer positions will...

Ask HN: Do you know an Obsidian-esque file explorer?

I'm looking for an Obsidian-esque file explorer that works in combination with the Johnny File System. There needs to be a better way to browse through files without the Windows Explorer. You should be able to tag files/folders and connect/link them together (like in Obsidian). Is there such a tool out there?References: https://obsidian.md/, https://johnnydecimal.com/

Re:Ask HN: Do you practice online minimalism? How? on Wednesday December 23, 2020 @09:18AM (#25517838)
Your answer showed me how insignificant my question is. And I don't mean that in a sarcastic or demeaning manner. It's just a fact. So thank you! :) (And happy holidays.) Tough maybe there's one small issue: your personal data (date of birth, home address, real name etc.) is stored in these 100+ accounts. I mean don't you mind a potential data breach?

For those retailer accounts that don't offer guest logins, I would immediately request a deletion of my account. For the other accounts like Visual Studio C++, I just use a throwaway email address and enter fake information.

Ask HN: Do you practice online minimalism? How?

It occurs to me that you have to have a lot of online accounts for various things and purposes. I am sure you have at least a couple of these accounts:Gmail, Outlook, Protonmail, Tutanota, GitHub, Dropbox, Standard Notes, FC2, Amazon, iTunes, GOG.com, Steam, itch.io, Twitter, YouTube, FC2, HN, Stack Overflow, Discord, Linkedin, Netflix, Spotify, Mubi, Grammarly, eBay, Bitwarden, SimpleLogin.io,...
